I love Gundam 00 for being that very specific type of “Metal Gear” silly where you have these actually quite pertinent and thought-provoking ideas about what it means to fight a war, what is the purpose of diplomacy in wartime, what defines someone as a terrorist or a freedom fighter and the nature of the proliferation of war as a means of furthering capitalism but it’s all dealt with by fighting in colour-coded robots and there’s this silly little man wearing a pink cardigan who will exclusively take advice from a robot friend that basically only he can talk to, and a guy with a split personality largely defined by what side of his face his emo fringe covers that day and their main antagonists are quite literally a rainbow hair army that represents the next stage in human evolution or some shit and one of the protagonist’s main rivals is an American guy who decides for no reason in season 2 to become a total weeb and theme all his mecha and dress sense around Samurai and starts calling himself “Mr. Bushido”. Bro, your name is Graham, what are you doing?

Except for Anew Returner, who is biologically female, none of the Innovades have a biological sex, and few of them seem very interested in identifying with a specific gender. There’s certainly some gender indicators used around them--pronouns in English, gendered forms of “I” in Japanese--but they ultimately seem pretty happy with their ambiguity and at least some of their lines directed at Anew can be read as disgust at the fact that she has a biological sex rather than as sexism against females.
