Reflection on Innovation Group

Our whole innovation group process has been really eye-opening, and I’ve been extremely aware of the creative process throughout the semester. I think I have really honed in on how to illicit creativity in myself when its needed through my studies of our innovation group process. The researchers who’s ideas I think were most important to keep in mind during this innovation group process were Amabile, Hennessey, and Mike C. Of course, other’s ideas were very important but I think these theorists’ ideas explicitly related to our process as I’ve described in some of my previous posts. Overall I’m really happy with the app we’ve created, and our powerpoint runs smoothly! I’m excited to share with the class.

Reflection on 11/8 meeting

We Brainstormed about possible names for our product and narrowed it down to “health check” or “check app” the most. I think it would be interesting to take a survey of people and ask them which of our possible names they liked the most, and then which ones they thought were the most creative. Obviously this is a case like we did in one of the very first classes where we rated collages on technical goodness and creativeness. Usually the two correlated with each other, which I think would be the case with the survey I’m proposing. The survey I’m proposing I think could have higher implications for creativity in popular culture which I’ve talked about in other parts of this blog. The fact that people would rate name as both creative and the one they like most (or the one they think has the most technical goodness) speaks to some reasoning as to why creativity has become a buzzword today. I think it would be interesting to get to the root of this (i.e. whether goodness actually causes us to rate something as creative or if something thats creative causes us to rate it as good.) For now I can only speculate, but I think the widespread use of people associating something that is originally creative as good has lead to a misconception in pop culture that the reverse is also true.

Reflection on 11/1 meeting

Today we started laying out our presentation slides, and I think it was the closest to a “state of flow” as our group has come to. In most, if not all, prior meetings we have had moments of silence or have gotten hung up on what to do next, but this meeting I think we all agreed and flowed and got things done that we needed to! We usually end right around the end of classes but we even stayed a minute or so after because we were still discussing and wrapping up. Maybe this was just my perception, but I didn’t look at the clock once during our meeting until other groups wrapped up, and to me, I felt we were in a state of flow. Again, relating it back to Asher Lev, I feel like we were working on our project and not even thinking about it as work/ realizing how much we were accomplishing, similar to the way Asher would mindlessly draw and not realize what he had drawn until after it was finished.

Reflection on 10/18 meeting

Having discussed Asher Lev and his creative process, specifically in relation to how he was most creative when around other artists creating works and immersed in the visual arts community, I am glad that we had people to talk to doctors about what our product needed to focus on. The idea that our most creative ideas will probably come from time spent immersed in hospitals or private practices (though realistically we cannot spend a summer shadowing doctors for the purpose of our project, I feel this is a good compromise.)

Moving forward, we have a dilemma as to whether our system should have an option for two GPs (because we are looking to cut down on doctor-patient time, this could be a good option to cut down on misdiagnoses.) We were wondering whether this could be an economically viable option, so maybe we could do some research in health appliance providers as to what would really make sense for our product to do. 

From some research we discovered that doctors dont like to feel like they are constantly being double checked, but we have the idea that this may be necessary to prevent misdiagnoses. This balance somewhat (though on a much much less intense scenario) reminded me of Asher’s dilemma to put nudes and then the crucifixion in his show. He feels a responsibility to both the art community/his mentors AND the hasidic jewish community/his family. In our situation, we feel a responsibility to patients and preventing misdiagnoses, but also to doctors and making them feel comfortable.

Reflection on 10/4 meeting

We heard today suggestions from experienced professionals in the field and we talked a lot about the issue of privacy and which doctors get to see what information. I agree that your optometrist shouldn’t be able to see what you are saying to your psychiatrist, however I do believe there is a big gap in western medicine for a Holistic approach. If you had one practice in which you could see your general practitioner, optometrist, and dentist, one where they are all in communication with each other, I think medicine could be revolutionized. Our interface/app (not sure what the right word is for our product is) can streamline all of the information from the doctors you see the most and I think is an important step toward a holistic approach to medicine. I also, however, dont want doctors to feel like they are being ‘watched’ by other doctors with their notes, but I’m not sure what a possible solution to this problem could be.

Reflection on 9/27 meeting

I am happy that we decided not to make our product a physical bracelet, because I feel as if there are many accessibility issues with the idea. An interface can be much more widely used and I think generally more accepted. I was tasked with research that will be useful when posing our product design, mostly misdiagnosis and general accidental malpractice statistics that we feel our interface/app will solve. Preventable harm in hospitals is the third leading cause of death in the United States, which is likely an understatement considering many preventable injuries may not be reported OR reported as something that can be attributed to an unavoidable (as opposed to preventable) cause.

Reflection on 9/20 meeting

We have been pretty good at zeroing in on what we want our product to be, and I cant decide whether thats a representation of a lack of creativity or if its a product of multiple like-minded creative people. We do have a concern however that we will not have enough details for our product to present on. I think that we will be fine as there is a lot of research to be done in regards to logistics of our product, all of which will be necessary when presenting our product to the class.

First Innovation Group Meet

Health & Fitness is the topic of my innovation group, and we started our meeting out with brainstorming some potential problems to solve. We thought of:

Restaurants publishing nutrition facts

Obesity

Elimination of smoking- campaign

Mindfulness- meditation

Mental Health issues ameliorated w physical fitness

New injury repair technology

Performance enhancing steroids in international competition

Medical malpractice prevention

Everyone in our group was really drawn to medical malpractice because it is one of the leading causes of preventable death according to cnn.com. As a group we tossed around ideas of possibly streamlining the “timeout” hospital process with a possible wearable technology with all medical records in it. We also tossed around the idea of a bracelet thats also worn during outpatient treatment with reminders to take medication at home or a reminder to complete at home treatment.
