This! I find Davey attractive, but I feel like he's constantly objectified by fans and I don't think that's right. I went to my first AFI show this week and I was on Hunter's side of the stage and not once did I hear a "I love you Hunter!" but every time Davey came around, all one could hear is "I love you Davey!!!!". AFI is not just Davey and AFI are just real people with real feelings and I'm sure it must suck to be treated like an object or not recognized for your work.
I mean, I don’t really have room to talk here, I objectify him to an extent. And I am more interested in Davey as a person than the other band members. Mostly because I connect to the lyrics more than any other part. So I can’t really comment on that and do it without being a hypocrite. But I do also appreciate them as musicians, and appreciate the incredible hard work it took them to get to this point. And also because Davey is a huge influence on my personal style more so than the others.
But my problem was with people physically touching Davey in a way that goes beyond “Oh my god you’re actually real”, or when he holds fans’ hands, or like when he crowd-walks. That was my main thing. Like...people shouldn’t touch them in a way they wouldn’t touch their very platonic friends. Like I think it’s ok to be attracted to the band members, but there are appropriate and inappropriate ways to express that. Maybe I’m still being a hypocrite here because I touched his jacket. But,...anyway, given they’ve been doing this for 20ish years they’re probably used to Davey getting a lot of the attention. From one of the blogs I read they’ve been getting racy fan letters and this sort of thing since the beginning. I think it was a combination between seeing that and reading about Davey being sexually harassed by women in his early teenage days. Like its totally possible to be head over heels for him without making him uncomfortable at a show.
I do also think most people connect to the vocalists because it’s a much more accessible instrument than drums, guitars, or bass. You have a base of information to work from when you’re looking up info about them or talking to them after shows. Most of the folks I know who closely follow people other than singers/vocalists play those instruments themselves. But I would agree that its important to note that it wouldn’t be AFI without all four of the guys contributing! Though, from what I’ve been hearing in interviews, Jade writes the base music, Davey takes his lyrics from that, and Hunter and Adam add their parts later. So really we wouldn’t have AFI without Jade. That man does everything!
