Filmmaking In Review. Film 5: ‘Sequence’ (J.H)

Hello there, this week we will be looking at our fifth film! I served as producer and actor for this piece. Also available will be a brief interview with the director just to get some thoughts on the shoot of the film and how our films are progressing as a whole.

The concept and inspiration behind ‘Sequence’.

For our fifth film, we were tasked with developing a piece that incorporated the use of dialectical montage. Dialectical montage being emphasized the usage of different images and clips to create meaning.  

At first, this was a challenge for us, as none of us had done something like this thus it was completely new. After a lot of thought and contemplation, we collectively had a lightbulb moment when our director mentioned an interrogation scene from a video game we had all played called ‘Black Ops(2010)’.

Whilst we all knew we could not achieve something of the same scale with a subject leather-strapped to a chair and TV’s all over the room showcasing war footage, we knew how we could adapt the concept. Me and (E.Y) and (C.H) all decided that our film would focus on an American agent interrogating a man tied to a chair who would have memory flashes of famous cold war/space race events, to play with.

My Role

On this shoot, I served as both producer and actor, producing was the easy part, acting had its own challenges.

Producing was easy as the communal building we booked we had previously filmed in, thus I could fill in a risk assessment the same way only accounting for small discrepancies that differ it from previous films we had shot there.

Acting, however, had its challenges. Not only was this role one that required me to use an American accent (as a Brummie in origin), but the role was also demanding in physical nature as there was lots of stomping and shouting.

The script created by our director (C.G.H) was laid out clearly and formatted well, so I had no problem learning the lines. The day before shooting I spent a considerable amount of time practicing my lines and accent, because of this preparation I would say that my performance turned out quite well.

Summary/Critique

This film is one of my favorites I have had the honor of contributing to so far at university. However, I do have some issues with it. First the positives.

First, the positives. Maybe this has some bias, but the acting in this is very good. (C.G.H) does a brilliant job to convey his fear and disorientation/confusion. Whilst I too do a good job of being a loud and intimidating presence (the opposite of how I am in reality). This is down to (C.G.H)’s fantastic-direction managed to do whilst he was tied up.

I also think the cinematography and editing, (both coordinated by E.Y) are fantastic. The numbers on the screen + the flow of the montage is visceral and draws attention. The cinematography does an excellent job of keeping my character mysterious and scary.

Now on the side of things, we could improve. The sound was functional and worked but I think that it could have been cleaner and used more sinister atmos. We were limited but I wish we could have found a better location to look more like a setup interrogation, not an improvised one. The background elements (such as the radiator) distract from the narrative.

Now, the montage itself, objectively a mixed bag. whilst I like the way it flashes up and I especially like the number effect on the screen, I wish we’d of done more with it.

For instance, we could have been more creative with the transitions to the montage. If the interrogator was to move the light quickly over the then we transition to montage, I think that could have had a more dynamic flow then what we ended up with. 

I do like the historical footage we ended up using, I like it a lot because with the low light and interrogators outfit it does a good job of linking to the theme of C.I.A conspiracy. I will say however I think we should have strictly focused on moon landings while splicing in the other elements made sense, a tighter focus could have been achieved by purely using moon landing footage.

All in all, very happy with the results of this effort, I feel we work well as a team and learn more from our mistakes with every shoot. Refining our style and creating better output.

Filmmaking In Review. Film 4: ‘Purgatory’ (J.H)

Hello there! This post will focus on our most recent film (which I directed and had written) and the concepts behind it, a video commentary is also available.

Concept

The original concept for purgatory changed and evolved for the week in which we received the brief for the film 4. From the start of our idea for the next film we (Specifically me and E.Y) wanted to explore VR/simulated reality visually, however, our brief required we create a soundscape.

At first, I saw this as a challenge as I originally wanted to make something that was more experimental visually and that a focus on sound would compromise that. So after deep thought, I went forward with the intent to create a soundscape that would work in synchronicity with the visuals.

Challenges in Pre-Production

I really love sci-fi so creating my own sci-fi concepts I found very attractive. Naturally, this meant that when creating the original treatment I went a tad overboard with the narrative elements. 

My concept of memory hacking and data stored within memory was, to be honest, too much for what was at max a 2.5 min film. Especially when said film was supposed to focus on the soundscape. After changes, I came up with something far tamer, not being as high concept but allowed for visual and audio experimentation.

Production

After communicating with the cinematographer (E.Y) and (C.H) who was in charge of sound, we decided to do some test footage pre-shoot. Inspired by ‘Altered Carbon(2018)’ we decided to experiment with a 360 camera owned by our cinematographer. Test footage would also be where we experiment with putting two of me onscreen via compositing done by our cinematographer.

We also decided that to make a unique sound design that matched our visuals we would use diegetic noise from the castle environment. In combination with actually removing noises in replacement with digital effects, the idea being that the simulation is breaking down.

Filming was incredibly efficient, we got all our shots as we planned, including 360 shots. C.H was on set recording audio with a Tascam. All in all, it was a well-planned and executed shoot. This was thanks to the time we put into previs and planning through group chat exchanges.

Post-Production and Overall thoughts

Our cinematographer completed the compositing shots with the desired cloning effect we wanted. These were all wider shots that worked quite well as they made it look like the second “me” was really a part of the world space. There was one composite shot however that was not wide, but an over-shoulder shot. The eyeline between the two “Me’s” synced up perfectly and really enhanced our abstract narrative visually.

I, C.H and E.Y spent 5 hours editing together a final cut. In this editing process, we decided that we would have certain concrete environmental sounds absent to make the audience feel unease. I think that the results of this did not go in our favor as it just seemed to confuse the audience rather than have any real effect.

Sadly our 360 camera footage, was corrupted and unusable, we got around it thanks to cutaways we got just incase. but I do think that the disorientation combined with the sounds we had planned to enhance it would have improved our film.

The narrative whilst not being the original in-depth sci-fi I wanted, still allowed for interesting visuals with the multiple versions of myself and glitch effects. the concept worked well and allowed for a somewhat coherent beginning middle and end.

I think that overall, this is our best work yet. Not only in a coherent, conceptually interesting sense. But also in a general workflow and collaboration between roles sense.

Filmmaking In Review. Film 3: “Persona/Noir” (J.H)

Brief Review

As mentioned in my video, I served as producer for this recreation of the scene from ‘Persona(1966)’. In addition to the impressions and experiences told in my video, this will be an objective review of the film. I think that we did a really good job with recreating the shots and lighting whilst also inserting our own unique story within them, that fit the recreated cinematography.

The original persona scene was akin to an intense dreamlike experience. The characters show aggression and move in strange unnerving ways. So, the story being changed into a stylish noir interrogation made sense, it allowed us to suspend disbelief for the stranger shots and also allowed for the intense content. What (E.Y) did so well with the dialogue was matching it to the speed and length showcased in the original persona while also keeping it within our noir theme.

While the criticism could be made that the dialogue was generic or stereotypical for our story, within a film so short it had to be this way in order to get across then play into the noir backdrop. Choosing to not over complicate the story was the only way to match it with original persona dialogue too. The story we tell also has a beginning, middle, and end, which wraps what was a singular scene into its own short film.

What I think we could improve on is sound editing as not every sound effect was 100% in sync. I also think that replicating the audio stings featured in the original persona scene could have also been highly beneficial in adding even more rhyme between both films.

I also think that the criticism made during our group viewing session on the following Friday was apt. That being that some shots hung for too long. We timed the shots specifically so they would match with the original persona, but still, I think this was shooting too far in hindsight.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I can say with confidence that this is a solid film, technically and story-wise. I’m more pleased about this than our previous films. In this film, our group behind the scenes and in practice have shown progression with our filmmaking technical skills and I’m so proud of us. Hopefully, our next film can continue to show positive development.
