Hi, I'd like to start by saying that you are my favourite blog, and I'd like to end by very apologetically asking how you translate....

Thank you for your kind words.

Translation can be divided into two parts: understanding the source language and writing in the target language.

I took a few years of Japanese courses at college. I learned basic grammar, sentence structure, and commonly used words…I mention this here because these are a bit more difficult to google than stand-alone vocabulary words. I have had a few lessons in Chinese before that so that helped in learning kanji. In practice, though, now I basically use google and other tools to look up all kanji I am unfamiliar with. If I don’t know how a kanji character/compound is read I use the Windows built-in IME pad (if you don’t know about it, it’s quite useful!). I use the firefox extension rikaichan (chrome extension rikaikun) to look up definitions too. Sometimes it is helpful to disregard the j-e dictionary English definitions and search for the phrase in Japanese websites to see how they are actually used. Partially defining parts of idioms and misunderstanding them is a common trap.

I spend more time thinking about how to write the content as I understand it in English than you might expect. Left to my own devices I will write in a rather stilted fashion, as you can see here. [I usually have difficulty translating Ryuko since I don’t speak “tough girl” so good. Ironically(?), I find Mikisugi easy to write…probably because we’re both didactic, pretentious douches]. I often take the words that the j-e dictionary spits out and look up synonyms or idioms to get inspired. After I write down my translation (on a separate screen window, like notepad, otherwise tumblr will probably eat it) I look over it a few times to try to see if I can make it flow better.

My translation skills are really quite amateur, so take my words with a grain of salt.
