In search of flow. Subconsciously influenced by surfing and skateboarding sub cultures. The familiar spark of an idea. Transferred into scribbled ink sketches in a little black book. Inspired by transient conversations on the art and craftsmanship of surfboard shaping. Long, short, wide, narrow, fish, diamond, vee, channels, single fin, thruster? The balance of form other function. Marking out your design in pencil on a surfboard blank. Making subtle tweaks and adjustments to enhance the overall shape. Making those initial cuts taking care not to fuck things up. The phrase “You can take away but can’t put back” ringing in your head. Working with unfamiliar tools and materials, trying to find your flow. Mowing foam for what feels like days, dust particles filling the air. A recognisable surfboard shape taking form. Stopping momentarily to observe high spots, imperfections and asymmetric anomalies. Cut, shape, sand, refine, stop. Stand back, take a look with fresh eyes, run your hand along the rails. Feels good to me, looks good to me, cool. Possibilities. A surfboard blank holds thousands.
