Lacewings, Part 1: This strange object is the stalked egg of a Green Lacewing (Family Chrysopidae) that I found in my backyard on the underside of a Milkweed leaf. The stalk is said to provide some protection to the egg from the ever-present ants by minimizing the chances of them contacting and recognizing the egg as prey. Insect eggs are often laid in environments where the food source of the insect is available. In this case, the Milkweed had a small colony of aphids growing on it, a food source for Lacewings, both as larvae and adults. What are Lacewings, you say?
