Also known as Attacus Atlas, is an insect which lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Malay Archipelago. This saturniid moth belongs to the Atlas family which get their name from the map-like pattern on their wings. But where does the Atlas moth get its nickname from? Well, in Hong Kong their Cantonese name is literally translated as “snake‘s head moth”. Why? The tips of their wings resemble a snake‘s head, a cobra in particular. And the giant moth has brains as well as beauty. When its threatened it drops on the ground and starts moving it wings resembling a cobra attack.
