she didn't even stop and think about it ; she saw the hunter go toward @insecurebarbie and she used her new vamp speed to put herself between them. the stake missed . . . ( her heart ) but carved it's way into her shoulder. it was still too close for comfort. and it hurt like a bitch. she barely had time to register the pain before her mother was snapping the hunter's neck. ❝ do you think it's going to leave a stain? ❞ she asked, avoiding eye contact as her mother cleaned up the open wound. aaaand avoiding the inevitable talking to she was going to get for that little act of heroism she tried to pull off. the wound would heal , but that wasn't the point and they both knew it.

“  i  am  not  upset !  ”      but  the  words  come  off  too  harsh.  a  snap  of  her  tongue.  cutting  through  the  air ,  like  a  razor  blade  without  a  mark.  she  hadn’t  meant  to  be  so  ...  defensive.      “  i’m  not  still  in  love  with  him.  that’s  —it  was  a  really  long  time  ago.  i  just  think  he  can  do  better.  that’s  all.  ”      there’s  a  scoff  at  the  end  of  her  sentence.  the  turning  up  of  her  nose.  he  had  moved  on ,  good.  so  had  she.  so  why  the  hell  did  it  still  sting  ?

tyler  can't  help  but  offer  caroline  the  smallest  smile.  they've  both  come  so  far  since  high  school  .  .  .  when  he  was  the  asshole  jock  and  she  was  the  bitchy  cheerleader.  now?  now  he  was  coaching  football  at  mystic  falls  high,  and  she  was  running  an  entire  school  out  of  the  salvatore  boarding  house.  they'd  become  fully  functional  adults,  and  most  of  the  time?  tyler  couldn't  believe  it.  ❝  you  are  helping  people  all  around  the  world.  ❞  tyler  pointed  out,  ❝  your  school  is  amazing.  the  things  you  do  for  those  kids  .  .  .  caroline,  i'm  so  happy  for  you.  ❞
