I’ve always been a huge fan of the Ratchet series. It all began when I played Up Your Arsenal on PS2. Years later I return to play the original, Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal and most recently, Tools of Destruction. Ratchet and his faithful sidekick Clank embark on a quest to find the origins of the Lombax and put a stop to General Tachyon.⁣ ⁣ The PS3 is no slouch in the graphics department and this new version of Ratchet looks great. Planets are vast, full of life and include many different environments. Bright, cheerful colors are everywhere and the game in motion is a treat.⁣ ⁣ David Bergeuad returns to craft another exciting score. The melodies are what fuels the soul of this series and David’s compositions are synonymous to Ratchet and Clank. Tracks like “Exploring the Wilderness”, “Cobalia Spaceport”, “Stratus City”, “the Trial of Turning Terror”, “Pirate Base Ardolis”, and all contain that signature Bergeuad style. Flutes, trumpets, horns, tribal beats, and pulsing digital synths combined with sweeping orchestral hits all sound exactly like they should. ⁣ ⁣ Smooth shooting, platform jumping, Captain Quark hating, Omniwrench smacking, grind rail riding adventures await. New to this version is a puzzle segment requiring the six axis controller – a section in which I did not like at all. Clanks sections fortunately were given an upgrade and never seemed too obnoxious.⁣ ⁣ Ratchet and Clank games wouldn’t be complete without a massive and varied arsenal. Doom blades, Shock ravager, Pyro blaster and Nano swarmers were my mainstays. Groovitron is my absolute favorite gadget. Upon being thrown, every enemy in the vicinity dances to ridiculously catchy disco music allowing free damage – including Bosses. ⁣ Tools of Destruction was fun, decent length and full of Ratchet and Clank humor I’ve come to know and love.
