All I could think of was all different ways I could kill myself. My family didn't get it. It had to be the devil. The church didn't either, I must be backsliding. The most annoying part was the assumption that I was suicidal because I have Cerebral Palsy. Every time someone threw that option into the conversation, I rolled my eyes and almost slapped them. Cerebral Palsy was the least of my worries. I had graduated from University at this time and on my way to the Nigerian Law School. Looking back now, a combination of factors, including my lack of awareness about the need to take care of my mental health dug me into a hole that almost consumed me. One honest conversation at a time was a large part of the healing process. I was blessed with non judgemental friends who didn't try to 'fix' me or preach to me, or tell me my feelings were irrational or didn't make sense. They gave me the biggest gift a highly functional depressed person like me needed; listening ears. Sam Samuel Abbah added good music and Kemi Adekemisola Adebayo Ogunode made sure I ate. Pastor Toks Olatokunbo Adedipe Akinbode prayed and cleaned up my room, Moji Obasa and Boma Bestman kept me laughing and staying on my meds. Sola Olusola Olagoke Akinjola made sure I studied and was never alone. One conversation at a time, one person at a time, these people changed my life and helped me find sunshine again. 10 years after, my life is completely different. I have been off medication for 8 years and I am very aware of the need to take care of my mental health. 1 in every 4 people will suffer a mental illness in their lifetime. If you want to win, you must put in the time and effort to place yourself in the best position to win. Sacrifices are necessary if you truly desire to win, and not all sacrifices are easy but they are worth it in the end.
