Chap Goh Mei The 15th Day of Chinese New Year marks the close of celebrations. Aunties and Tua Pek mark this auspicious day with a fabulous dinner cooked by Aunty KK. Aunty Yoke Har brought her CNY Kuih Tart, Kuih Sipit (folded love letters) and Kuih Koya. As per tradition, mandarins were prepared for the throwing of mandarins. The currently unpartnered ones amongst us wrote our name and contact number on the mandarins with waterproof ink. After dinner we take them to the waters edge, and potential suitors (hopefully a yacht owner) will fish them up and live happily ever after, cruising the seas. Chinese New Year Day 6 (Chay Lak) A spectacular Mendukushi Gift Noodle Box Set of 8 different noodles from Tokyo Foods Co. gifted by Jeffery and Charlotte (of Mamak Takapuna) to celebrate Chinese New Year 2018, The Year of the Dog. And appropriate “dog” cookies plus sago kueh balls, all from our home state of Sarawak. Tradition requires gifting mandarins (the orange red colour of the skin signifying prosperity & happiness). Basically, when get given 4 mandarins, you return 2 to the giver, as a reciprocal goodwill gesture. Day 6 has encapsulated the spirit of Chinese New Year. I’m humbled and thankful. While at Mamak Takapuna, we had a Nasi Lemak with chicken curry and a taste of home in the Sarawak Laksa. The Prosperity Toss To see out the old year, we gather to have the biggest and grandest meal of the old year. Aunty KK annd son Jacky invited Uncle to join them for the Yue Sang or Properity Toss and to partake in a grand feast. We enjoyed Bak Kut Teh; Aubty even made a vegetarian version. There were dumplings, steamed tom yam blue cod, paua & dried scallop, pork belly in bean sauce, fish maw and vegetarian Lo Han Chye.
