1. New Instagram update allows you to zoom into pictures
Instagram is finally shaping up as a platform for more serious photographers rather than just social media mavens. Yesterday the new zoom feature which allows you to hone in on the details became available on iOS, it uses a simple pinch gesture and it works with video, covers content on your feed, profiles and in Explore. As usual, Android users will have to wait a while longer; zoom will arrive for team Google “in the coming weeks.” No word on Windows support though.

2. Facebook officially showcases vertical videos
A little over a year since announcing Facebook would support vertical videos, the social network is making that support more obvious in people’s mobile news feeds. Previously vertical videos were cropped into squares when displayed in people’s news feed, and people had to click to see the vertically oriented version. Not anymore. Now vertically formatted videos, including ads and Live broadcasts, will appear as vertically formatted videos in iOS and Android users’ news feeds, so bear this in mind when shooting videos for your brands.

3. Gatorade’s Snapchat video game ad featuring Serena Williams
“Serena Match Point” is sitting inside ESPN’s Discover channel on Snapchat as an ad. When users swipe up the ad, they will be directed to an in-app game experience. The old-school tennis game features 22 levels with each representing one of Serena Williams’ Grand Slam wins. Level 23 will unlock on September 10, the day of the Women’s Finals, should Williams win. Players can simply click on one of the three tennis balls to initiate the game, and tap left or right to catch the ball.

4. Facebook ‘Trending’ AI Problems
Just months after the discovery that Facebook’s “trending” news module was curated and tweaked by human beings, the company has eliminated its editors and left the algorithm to do its job. The results, so far, are a disaster. A fake news story over the weekend about Fox News' Megyn Kelly and links to an article about a video of a man masturbating with a McDonald’s chicken sandwich were elevated to the top spots on the social platform's Trending section, raising questions about Facebook's decision to switch out human curators for machine learning – does this mean that AI isn't ready for prime time?

5. DJ Khaled x Nike Snapchat Ad during VMAs
Since Snapchat launched ads within stories earlier this summer a growing number of brands have been paying for advertisements on the app. On the night of VMAs ad spots on Snapchat can cost brands almost $700,000 for 30 seconds. However instead of showing a professionally produced ad, Nike used its 30 seconds of screen time to show a shakily filmed Snapchat video from DJ Khaled's Snapchat (shared by the rapper and influencer earlier that day) with no editing — just Khaled talking about his Air Jordans. An ad like this, lifted from Snapchat, is cheap, raw, and real. Could the ad usher in a new era of advertisements? A trend of less polished, Snapchat-style ads on everything we stream? Most likely, yes. DJ Khaled, you’ve just dropped a major key.
