A Kind of Relax/De-stress Room? [idea]
I was thinking about trying out an installation with hundreds of LEDs filling a room, and one can walk around or sit down and be surrounded by ‘stars’.
What would you call a room like this?
Final alterations
After mulling over the idea and having some feedback from other, the reason that they begin dancing is unclear. Another thing is the use of lights, as flash mats on the floor to promote steps and movement. Though all of this would be more comfortable for the audience if there were more people joining in, and having some people already dancing.
Although these things are small they could greatly improve the participation of the audience.
Overview
After a lot of research into the aspects of my idea, I found that though it was rather complex it could work out. As a result research played a very important part in the creation of the concept, as the different twists taken by different artists helped me realise what I wanted in an installation. Which was an immersive interactive experience, to push the audience in a different way and show them a different feeling.
During this process of development i’ve found that the diversity it could provide works very well to create a unique atmosphere. While the story that leads the audience creates a smooth flowing peice, but can make rather drastic changes like the TV being switched off abruptly stopping the music.
Although the overall idea seems to work more refinement is needed, especially on the music as there doesn’t seem to be enough variation in styles to make everyone want to move. Then again a stronger feeling may be produced with a variety of music playing at once.
On the whole I believe this concept insites enough emotion to get the message across that all humans have the capability of overcoming fear and embarrassment if the right encouragement is provided. Which was my hope from the beginning, as emotions sometimes need a slight explanation and team work.
Varying outcomes
For a range of outcomes, multiple variations of the ending would need to be made these would be very dependent on the range of movement from the audience. These would be split into different ranges of movement, which would give a different level of emotion.
For example- a sad viewer if there was no dancing, a rather hyper happy viewer for a lot of dancing, with varying degrees of emotion between the two.
No dancing- the viewer flops on the ground and turns off the tv, which results in audience going through a door with a sign similar in effect to 'forgotten shows'.(stays black and white)
Little dancing- the viewer's head bops slightly and her legs swing, a door then opens to let the audience out (hints of colour in the viewer)
Dancing- the viewer would sit up and half dance, the door would open with a 'bring the world colour ' sign above it.(the viewer is in colour)
Lots of dancing- the viewer gets up and starts dancing in a strange manner, while miming the words. Meanwhile the audience would have a stray lasers and a disco ball start, the door would then open taking them back to the world.(viewer in full colour)
To do this the level of movement would be calculated using 3D cameras, to recognize the movement. Which would improve the accuracy of the calculations, and so would give an automated response.
Music to make you dance
After looking at what music was popular at occasions to dance to, I have made a basic list with iconic dances and songs. These come from multiple time periods and vary in style.
For example:
Night fever- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hLaSNF-r2gk
Thriller- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lermP2ZpWjA
Gangnam style- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CH1XGdu-hzQ
A Waltz- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZolXOIGB9cU
These are only a basic selection of popular songs through the years, some other songs and dances could be; Chicken dance, U can’t touch this, Vogue, Mashed potato, Macarena, Single ladies
Although the songs won’t cover everything, so wouldn't inspire everyone to dance there is little that could be done for that. However it would be possible if everyone was wearing headphones and chose their own style music, as this would give a personal experience. Unfortunately it would make the audience more isolated from each other, so wouldn’t impact them to create bonds and strengthen them. Which is an important part as the audience has to work as a whole to activate the installation.
The basics of creating the story and storyboard:
Character design/characteristics-
Rough silhouette- show the readability
Section the silhouette
Push the proportions- create a more unique style
Ideas of body language- exaggerate some aspects
Draw using tones- usually 4 tones, focus on important aspect
Choose a scale and stick by it
Do the images read well-
Use optical centre in placement
Remove tangents as they can be distractive
Use straight and curved lines to lead the eye
Use line colour as it reads faster
Idea development
With the concept of changing people’s emotions from “Timorous” to “Exultant”, the installation has to be very interactive with small goals to accomplish. If these small goals have multiple possible completion stories, these would respond to the amount of participation so would give different responses. This would give the audience a lot more control and encouragement to dance.
The goals could be to make an animated feature move, this could have many options of how to move based on the amount of dancing that happens. Though more research should be carried out on this concept, as it can happen in some games.
