Netflix Korean reality TV show, referred to as the ‘real’ Squid Games. “One hundred contestants in top physical shape compete in a series of gruelling challenges to claim the honour -- and cash reward -- as the last one standing.”
Wish I had watched this sooner, both Matt and Natalie mentioned that my board game reminded them of this show- thanks both for recommending this!
The Ouroboros challenge was exactly the same premise as my board game, that the players have to catch the player in front of them to win. I love that this show took inspiration from mythological punishments, and of course references ancient practices of the Olympic games and Colosseum gladiatorial battles; which is what I’ve been really interested in. They created challenges and games based off of mythological stories, such as the ‘Punishment of Atlas’, the ‘Flame of Prometheus’, the ‘Wings of Icarus’, the ‘Tail of Ouroboros’ and the ‘Punishment of Sisyphus’, while also being technologically relevant in our entertainment-loving society by referencing the Squid Games series.
I loved the animations used to introduce the game and arena, these cube environments remind me of my Chatrooms project last year, where I made those 3D models of ‘block rooms’.
Also, in the finale rounds I like how the dwindling number of contestants are represented by geometric shapes with the corresponding number of points. This show pays attention to symbols and visual elements to represent the progression of the competition. And the clear reference to the Squid Games finale feast between the remaining three players.

Critique installation images. I’m happy with this but still see many things that need improvement, I’m proud of all the hard work I put into it however- and now I know what I need to do for next time!

can’t remember source :’( installation - smallish screen, cord neatly secured but not hidden. Remember the video at NGV on an ipad that was secured in a custom built white wooden box.

The storyline
Taking the concept of fantasy and unreal things, I thought about how they could be trapped in a strange place. For example: another world, unknown place, different time, a game, trapped in an object
With this in mind I decided to go with the object idea, this is as it gives an unreal feel as it seems familiar while being completely different. After choosing to do an object I felt that to increases the confusion adding an reminder of the normal world do that.
The story line is based on the idea that the audience is trapped in the TV, and their only way out is to make the viewer dance or smile. This is done by the audience dancing, with response from the viewer varying depending on the amount of movement in the audience.
Idea development
After further research into animation and how to prepare for it, I produced a simple storyline to follow. Keeping in mind the reluctance to dance some have, I thought that if the mood was lightened using comical dances it could improve the effects.
This was based on bringing people out of their shells to make an overwhelming happy atmosphere, this is as happiness is similar to laughter in that it’s easily susceptible to people. Keepining this in mind adding funny dance skits to the entrance would subliminally lighten the atmosphere slightly, as some may imitate the styles.
