Don’t look at me
Kaye Kim Mixed media, 2019
I made 36 chess pieces and placed them on a big pink and blue chessboard. I then projected animation I made on top. When I was a child my parents enrolled me in chess masters an after-school club where you learn chess. I never learned how to play and I often created elaborate storylines with the pieces rather than actually play correctly. The club gave me a trophy for sportsmanship. Chess while a game of the mind is symbolically imperialistic and violent I created this piece as a rejection of that violence and as a homage to my seven-year-old self who only wanted all the pieces to get along.
