Typography Intervention - Installation & Performance
I used typography overlaid onto a mediated performance to create a juxtaposition between written and spoken word.
The “neon” sign was made from electroluminescent wire shaped with pins and tape and reads “none of this happened” in my handwriting. The video is of my mouth reciting a story from memory. This combination of installation and performance in a video addresses issues that young girls face regarding communicating traumatic events. I recounted a personal experience and used the typography to “censor” myself. This self-denial is something I have struggled with and creating this piece was my way of conveying the experience.
Self Performance
Through this performance, I wanted to create a relationship between past and present self through performance and media. The past self exists in the mediated performance while the present self exists in the live performance.
This relationship is exclusionary and puts the viewer in a position where they are not invited into the dialogue. I exaggerated the proportion of the past self. This scale difference and the “lick” at the end of the performance are used to create intimacy between the two selves. The past self acts like a mother to the present self and nurtures it. I wanted this performance to be playful and a little ridiculous but in all for it to show the importance of having a relationship within yourself.
