Week 10: 8/03 - 8/05
During my final weeks at The Syndicate I worked on wrapping up all of the designs I had been helping to work on for the company’s rebrand. This included the handbook which was finalized in InDesign for printing in a 5″ x 8″ format. I reorganized the layout to fit these new specifications. I also helped create new stationary to go along with the updated identity of the company. This included a postcard as well as a notepad.
Week 9: 7/27 - 7/29
The publicity department enlisted me this week to help create an invite design for Luna Aura’s upcoming show in LA. I looked through a couple of press photos we had on the server as well as the typography she uses for her name and created the rest. One of the publicity managers also informed me that her favorite color is purple, so I made sure to use it as an accent color in the invite. I really liked the look of Luna Aura’s website (http://lunaauramusic.com/) so I tried to give the invite the same image-based design with simple type and pops of color. This week was also my second Syntern Weekly where one intern contributes to the Syndicate’s Instagram so I decided to show my work station as I worked on this particular design.
Week 8: 7/20 - 7/22
This week I got to work in the marketing department and help out with a couple of research projects. For one project, I researched the social media networks of all of the Syndicate’s marketing representatives. I also helped research current and alumni bands that the Syndicate’s Feed the Beat (the project we are doing for Taco Bell).
This was also the week that we finalized the business card designs. The partners decided that they wanted the front of the cards to have a white background and the backs to have a black background.
Week 7: 7/14 - 7/15
The other design interns and I had been working on the signature file for the staff’s emails for a couple of weeks now. This week, the signature file was finally ready to be used. We used Adobe Dreamweaver to help us write the code for the file and created versions for every single person on the staff. I then met with each one to help them customize it - some wanted social links left out, others wanted other networks added in, etc. - and change their old signature file. I feel like I got to know everyone, especially the people I haven’t yet worked with, a little bit better after meeting with them one-on-one.
Week 6: 7/6 - 7/7
I was only in the office this week for 2 days because of a student film festival I attended that weekend. I left for Los Angeles on Wednesday and was to return the following Monday. On these two days I worked on finalizing the business cards as well as these hiring posters for the Fall.
I made these posters with two goals in mind: appealing to college students and reflecting the office environment. To appeal to my peers, other college students, I made the posters graphic yet simple. I wanted the text to speak the loudest so I used only minimal elements to frame it. To reflect what it’s like working in this office, I took inspiration from the records hanging all over the walls in every room. I took all of the information on the posters from our website and intern handbook. The final product is above - one for the general interns and one for the graphic design interns.
Week 5: 6/29 - 7/1
This week, I was able to focus on work for the Radio department. In addition to the regular promotion mailings, I listened to a couple of albums the Syndicate is promoting and either listened to it to make sure it was FCC clean or helped to write a description of the album for the college or specialty radio stickers or both. Each week, we put these stickers on the albums for the promotional mailings.
One of the albums I was able to write about was France Rocks Vol. 2. This album is a compilation of trending artists in France currently. I especially liked this assignment because of my French background. After some thorough research on the artists, I learned that there are mostly two kinds of French music being generated today: dark electronic and culturally inspired contemporary music. Above is the sticker that was made using the description I helped to write.
Week 4: 6/22 - 6/25
Most of this week consisted of writing content for promotion stickers for college and specialty radio while we waited to hear back from the partners about the designs we worked on in the recent weeks. I had not yet worked with the Radio department besides handling their mailings so it was interesting to try something new. As it turns out, I think I’m pretty good at writing about music. Coming in, I had a bit of experience writing reviews on new albums for my college radio station, WTSR. This was similar to that in that I wrote blurbs about whole albums or lead tracks for bands we are working with.
Later in the week, when we finally got feedback from the partners, I worked on finalizing the designs for company assets including the letterhead, the signature file, and a business card. I had not worked on the business card yet. The partners gave us edits on the designs so I was able to completely finalize the letterhead and signature file. They wanted the business card designs to be changed more drastically so I came up with some more options based on what the other interns had already started.
The end of this week was a little bit different. The Syndicate had a connection to A2IM, an organization of independent music labels, so the interns were given an opportunity to volunteer at Indie Week. This means that I had a volunteer shift on Thursday, at the Libera Awards, the final event. The awards took place in Manhattan and several interns from different companies and organizations (including A2IM) were there to help out. For the majority of the night, I manned the front door and checked in people from all over the music industry. It was pretty cool to be able to be a part of all of this.
Logo Design - CUB ALT
TCNJ’s College Union Board launches it’s new venture: an Alternative Programming Series called CUB Alt.
As one of two new graphic artists, one of my first projects was to create the logo.
Week 3: 6/15 - 6/17
This week, the Syndicate kicked off Syntern Weekly where all the interns take turns contributing to the Instagram account for one week each at a time. This week was my week so throughout the days I was at the office, I took pictures of my experiences. In the end, I picked two of the pictures I took, wrote accompanying blurbs, and sent them to our Social Media Strategist. My two posts were related to one another and were inspired by my recent interest in using the body in art. Of course, this was meant to be silly but I felt it still showed my personality and what I have to contribute to the office dynamic. This particular week, we had a lot of mailing to do for the Radio and PR departments so I chose to show the process of getting those CDs packaged and out.
Week 2: 6/8 - 6/10
This week I finally felt like I was getting used to the office environment. I was able to pick up the phone and direct calls with ease, help out with mailings with confidence, and finally learn names. My main projects for this week were handbook designs. One of these projects was for the Street Marketing team in which I updated their old handbook design by updating information and the layout. While a lot of the information changed, the general look of the handbook was not and so I will not be posting it.
However, my second project was to design assets for the company itself. This included a letterhead and employee handbook. Above I included a letterhead design that I helped create. A revised version with the asymmetric black bar but with the logo centered will be used. I also helped put together a 50-page employee handbook from content given to me by the office manager. Both the letterhead and handbook were inspired by the minimalism and professionalism I saw in the company’s website. I used lines as design elements to guide the viewer to the most important information on the pages. I kept each of the designs monochrome and simple to match what I found in the logo designs I was provided with. The other design interns, Ryan and Gabby, revised these designs later on in the week. Above I have included my original designs for some of the pages - the cover and section opener. The company is going to use a revised version of these.
Week 1: 6/1 - 6/3
My first week at The Syndicate was exciting and a little bit hectic as the other interns and I nervously settled into a brand new office environment. I am the only graphic design intern on the three days out of the week that I come in. This means that I am the go-to intern for all the design needs for the company on those particular days. It seems to me that everyone in the office has a bit of design knowledge so it is a collaborative atmosphere where people bounce ideas off of one another while I execute these ideas on the design software. I was given assignments with very thorough needs and was able to complete them within 1 or 2 days. In all, I am very excited to be working with teams that deal with different areas of marketing expertise and helping them realize designs.
The first project I was given was to design a tote bag, t-shirt, tattoo, and poster for The Laugh Button, a property of The Syndicate that deals with comedy, and generating ideas for a Warped Tour campaign. These promo items would be given out by marketing representatives during the event. I worked closely with the comedy department to create designs that functioned socially as well as visually. The comedy department came up with an idea to use the iconic “LOVE” graphic in a temporary tattoo to appeal to the crowds at Warped Tour. They wanted the “button” from The Laugh Button logo incorporated into this graphic. They also wanted the handle for The Laugh Button as well as their tagline in a hash tag included in the designs. The poster was also inspired by design work done by former interns in order to stay consistent with the branding. Throughout the days we were working on these we went through multiple versions of the designs until we came up with the final ones above. z
Two Wall Performance
This was a mediated performance that spanned two walls opposite each other and featured myself and a male performer.
The two videos were projected on opposite walls with one video being a male chest and the other a female back. At about 3 and 6 minutes, the bodies turn. The male chest turns into a female back and vice-versa. Through this performance, I wanted to set up viewer expectations surrounding this power dialogue between man and woman. I created tension between the two and wanted each to have their own kind of power. The female back to me showed vulnerability while the man seemed to dominate the space of the room. However, this leaves the man exposed while the woman is allowed to look away from the viewer. I also blurred identity by leaving out the faces of the performers in order to make a comment about man and woman generally rather than making a personal narrative.
Typography Intervention - Installation & Performance
I used typography overlaid onto a mediated performance to create a juxtaposition between written and spoken word.
The “neon” sign was made from electroluminescent wire shaped with pins and tape and reads “none of this happened” in my handwriting. The video is of my mouth reciting a story from memory. This combination of installation and performance in a video addresses issues that young girls face regarding communicating traumatic events. I recounted a personal experience and used the typography to “censor” myself. This self-denial is something I have struggled with and creating this piece was my way of conveying the experience.
