Okay so I’m going to weigh in on Insatiable, that Debbie Ryan netflix show because i just watched it.
I’m only going to give it a 2/10, and if you want to know why, feel free to read more...
I didn’t want to judge by the trailer in case there was more than what was shown, but honestly the trailer isn’t not even that offence compared to the show.
First off, Patty’s weight lose is not realistic, at all. As someone who is big and has a lost a lot of weight, i would know. i mean it took me six months to lose 50 pounds and that was from serious dieting and exercise. In the show, she loses 70 in 3 months on a liquid diet. not only is that unhealthy, but she would also have no muscle and could cause a lot of damage. it’s not a good thing to just brush off like the show did.
Second, there’s our introduction to Bob Armstrong, who is accused of sexual assault, even though he didn’t. I don’t think that’s a good joke at all. People are struggling to prove cases that are real and a show just goes and makes a joke like that, feels very insensitive. Then later when Patty has a crush on Bob, she’s reminded he might be a molester and her line is, ‘maybe that’ll give me chance’. there are so many things wrong with that. Not to mention there was actual statutory rape with Regina and Brick, and it was just brushed off. Brick’s parents had one conversation about it with him and they turned it on themselves and Regina may have been sent to jail but she was released with no explanation, nor was she kept away from younger boys, coming onto Christian later. Yeah, that’s not a good joke to keep making.
Third, is definitely ‘skinny power’. The idea being skinny makes everything happen, but in reality, she’s still the exact same person, just skinny. It’s no lie that society does discriminate and in high school there is fat shamming, but as long we tell those stories no one will ever learn otherwise. I was bigger all through high school and yes it sucked, i was bullied, but i also knew my friends were my friends because they liked me for me, and the more i embraced myself and became confident the less people cared because the less I cared.
It’s a hard topic, because fat shaming happens daily because we see skinny people in tv shows and movies and we’re told their beautiful, but really everyone is beautiful no matter who they look.
the only character in the show who actually gets that is Dee, who is very confident and unapologetic about herself.
Lastly, because this post will take too long if i go on, the show handled LGBTQ aspect all wrong. Other than Nandie and her struggles with realising she was gay (honestly i just want a show about Nandie instead), they handled Bob realising he was bi all wrong, with constant shaming and being told it was phrase or a gateway. Also the use of the trans character was interesting but a ploy they used to make it look good. They never name her or bring her up again which is total shame.
All in all i thought the show was awful and cringy. There was plot twist after plot twist which wasn’t honestly shocking and most of the time just seemed like it was thrown in there because someone went “hey let’s try this”. It never made any sense to the story line, or to the characters development, it was all shock value. I’m also not religious but definitely had issues with the stereotypes they threw in there of southern Christians, but I won’t start on that because I don’t know enough about it.
If for some god awful reason there’s a second season can it just be about Nandie, and maybe Aylssa Milano’s character because she was badass too.
