Our final project for our CAPE unit this year. We started our project one week before CPS was closed, due to COVID-19. The remainder of our project and unit has been done remotely. Our inquiry shifted in response to the pandemic. The inquiry that we have ended up exploring is "How can we connect our individual experiences, the phenomena of weather, and the phenomena of spoken word?" This is the spoken word piece that emerged from that inquiry, titled "Creating Connections through Weather and Spoken Word in a time of Quarantine." Students submitted writing and reflections about weather and spoken word and submitted vocal recordings, all done in their homes. They also created and emailed visual art to support the story that emerged in the piece, although the drawings were not the focus of the unit.
Recently, I was feeling a lack of inspiration in making videos. So much of my process as an educator is responsive to my students. I felt like I was running out of ideas without the input of my students - their interests, their constraints, their successes, their ideas.
I decided to make a video about what I do when I'm feeling creatively stuck. That quickly turned into me reaching out to different folks I know who I thought could share some great inspiration for, not only me, but for my students. That idea quickly turned into a series of videos, each featuring different artists and their processes.
The first video in the "Finding Inspiration" series features Aram Atamian, teaching artist at Waters, Ray Graham and Dever Elementary.
I hope this video finds you well and provides some inspiration!
You can find more of Aram's beautiful work on this forum or at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAzfPsNSRe8rydGY1gfOlHA
From Molly Cranch:
I created this lesson for Sherwood Elementary's 2nd grade Co-Lab project. Our initial project focused on color and identifying emotions such as happy, sad, excited, angry, etc. While learning to identify emotions is very important, my concerns have shifted now that shelter-in-home continues. I wonder, what opportunities do students have to express and create freely? Can expression that is free of expectation help students to process emotions?

Ms. Adesida here….This video is a bit of talk on how our homes are theatre spaces or spaces in which we have all the accoutrments (stage, costumes, props, actors, etc.) for performing. Then we go into a game with a home object turn prop. Enjoy watching. :)

This video is part of the class of Arts and the Environment that is taught in spanish language. I co-teach this class with Jessica Mueller at Telpochcalli School, it is a class for parents.
We have being trying to find topics that are closer to their environment, so in this case I invite them to explore the seeds that they might have at home and some other nature that co-live with them.
Ms. Adesida here…. it feels strange to refer to myself that way when not in front of my students..lol. I teach with Ms. Snowden at New Sullivan Elementary and Ms. English-Harris and Ms. Graham at Dyett High School. At New Sullivan, we were working on collecting and performing oral histories and used improv concepts and games to build on, around, and on top of those stories. However, we also played games just to have fun and get our creative juices. This video is to encourage that sense of playfulness and embodied creativity while we are living life mostly indoors and getting family members involved as are mine in this video.
