People liked to say it was a small world when they ran into people they didn’t expect. But, considering how small and insular the magical community could be, it was surprising how little contact he had with his wife’s old acquaintances. Maybe if he worked at the Ministry, there’d be more overlap. Maybe the purebloods just didn’t appreciate the dramatic arts. (He could hear Andy’s voice in his head, telling him they were a bunch of overdramatic prats.) Regardless, it didn’t prepare him to find himself face to face with Bellatrix in Flourish and Blotts.
He knew he was staring at her like a deer in the headlights. He knew Dora was right beside him, wondering what was going on. He shook himself of the adrenaline that had rooted himself to the spot and turned to his child. “Why don’t you go to the kid’s section?” he said. “You can pick our three books, okay? Make ‘em count.”
When Dora had chirped that she would, running off in that direction of the bookstore, he turned back to his estranged sister-in-law. “Bellatrix.” He nodded sharply at her.
