       IT WAS JUST HIS LUCK  .      another grinding noise from his engine as he turns the key .  vexed ,  he uses a fist to slam into the wheel of his car ;  a sudden outburst that did nothing to help his irritation .    there’s a shadow nearing him , though ,    a glimpse of another person as he exits his car to call out to them .      “  ‘scuse me ,  hey !  ”   it was late ,  he wouldn’t be surprised if the other was sketched out by him .  “  uh ,  my battery’s dead .  you got any jumper cables ?   maybe a bottle of jameson or something to take me out of my misery  ?  ”

               ah ,    the crashdown cafe.   one of the many places in roswell where a  small conversation about filmmaking can take a sudden leap into adiya showing suraj every single lip-syching video she has saved in her tiktok drafts.  it’s not about what you can do,  it’s about who you know.     “  look  ,  raj  ,  ”     a nickname she had chosen for them just in that moment,  her phone display fading to black with one click as she places the device on the table in front of her.   brown hues that spent most of their time flickering between her phone screen and the person watching,  now solely rest on their facial features.     “  i’m not saying i’m fucking  lupita nyong'o   over here but i am saying i’m at least STAR MATERIAL right ?   so if you’re ever looking for an actress,  i can get down with full - frontal,   if you know what i mean.    ”

HIS CAR IS ABSOLUTELY FUCKED . his car is usually fucked but more so in a check engine light way , never in a tree falling on roof of car kind of way . unfortunately it wasn't an under the table job . not a problem that someone's uncle can fix in their shoddy aurora bay drive garage ( for multiple reasons ) , this was something that he only trusted an expert to repair . even if the the pittstop garage took their EEOC laws a little too seriously .

speaking of equal employment opportunities: " cassidy , " he greets with a grin , like they're old pals , as if the history between the two isn't incredibly unpleasant . hey , bygones , right ? " your sister told me you were working here , good for you , man . this one's mine , just wanted to check on it . " he gestures towards a black audi . the damage wasn't too bad , a dented roof and scrapes on the windshield . " wait , shit , sorry: it's frankie . " he uses a thumb to point at himself, " i don't know if you remember me from school ? years ago . "

                          IN A CROWD FULL OF BEAUTIFUL WOMEN      in extravagant dresses ,  he truly only cared about one beautiful woman in an extravagant dress .  the honeymoon phase was a recurring feeling for stephen ;   an infatuation for his girlfriend that he could never see dying out .  and while he lost her in the crowd ,  intentionally giving her space to mingle with others ,   it wasn’t hard to spot her again .  he stands behind her at first ,  waiting for the conversation she was having to dwindle before he spoke to get her attention .  “  hey ,  ”     he wants to ,  again ,  tell her how beautiful she looks but he’s worried the repetitiveness will COME OFF CORNY  .   instead  he extends his hand ,  handing her a glass of champagne ,  an arm placed around her waist afterward  .  “  you seem like the type to have a very,  very,  good looking boyfriend .    do you come here often ?   ”

                     HE ISN’T SURE HOW HE ENDED UP HERE.     awaiting for the announcement of his name,  followed by the name of the random woman he found himself shooting the shit with,   but here he was.   stumbling over words,  hiccupping throughout his sentences.    “  so we’re just gonna take the mic,  just like this,  ”    sloppily,   he exaggerates the action of snatching a mic from the air,  barely able to keep himself up straight after doing so.   “  and we’re gonna say -   we’re gonna sing it,  because what are they gonna do ?  are they gonna boo us ?  ”     YES, ACTUALLY,  it was very likely considering how discordant darryon had   always been    but now wasn’t the time to allow flaws to get in the way of his one moment to shine.     “  i’m darryon fucking sims, right ?  georgia bulldogs legend,    they can’t just boo me.  ”    a reputation more commonly known by fathers who are almost too interested in college football but, still.    “  i was almost in the NFL and you’re -    ”   named after a month.   “  ballsy enough to sneak a flask into a festival,   they’re not gonna boo us.  ”       /   @ohaprils​

          victoria adsuar was a rumor in high school.  even when she was still in school, people always wondered about her.  soggy heard many things about her  when she up and left:   kidnapping,  death,   rehab  -    he never paid  attention to the grapevine at the time to consider it holding any truth.  they weren’t the best of friends,  he faintly remembers sneaking out of his backdoor with her when she slept on his couch to meet up with the group they hung around;  tip - toeing around the living room in the morning as to not wake her.   and conversation now was merely awkward neighborly pleasantries.  probably for the best.   they both have pasts they’d like to leave behind. but it’s also nice to see a familiar face every now and then.  one that also shared the homecooked meals and overbearing questions of his moms.    

           he’s just closing the door to his mailbox when he sees her,   a nod in her direction,   that friendly uncomfortable white person   smile he often does.    only this time,  for whatever reason, it gets followed by an actual greeting.      “  hey, victoria,  ”    he starts,  tucking a package with his name on it under his arm,     “  i just wanted to say,  i don’t know like all that’s going on between you two but  i don’t want you to feel any insecurity about archie and i.   we’re just friends.  ”       his words are all in fun,   the jest slipping through lips as he feigns a look of pity.     “  is our chemistry undeniable ?     sure.  do we swap spit whenever we share a bong ?     yeah.   but it’s nothing more than that, i don’t want you to get the wrong idea.  ”

               “  you know,  i never met an actual person who claimed to genuinely like billy ray cyrus’ music.  ”       it was an outburst of a statement between yawns   &    dad jokes, although plenty of what he says often is,  if only to start some conversation with heather.  having always found tranquility in just hearing her talk.   his hands are holding a vintage album titled    SOME GAVE ALL    with billy ray cyrus’ name attached to it.   the store is quiet,  for the most part,  besides the music playing above them.     “  we tolerated him,  right,    ‘cause he made that song with lil nas  &  because of miley but,  let’s be honest,  achy breaky heart was a shit song. ”   an opinion he formed without actually listening to the lyrics.   “  hey, there’s a conspiracy if you need one:  how the fuck did billy ray get so popular ?  illuminati ?  ”      /   @heathrstone​ .
