" Samuel? " Teddy peers around the shoulder of the man in front of him in line, and upon seeing the familiar face he thought he'd recognized by silhouette, he gives a little wave. " I thought it might be. I'm sorry to interrupt your deliberation time over which baked goods to get, but I was hoping to say thank you for letting me trespass in your garden the other day. "

Teddy is sitting very, very still. He has been sitting very, very still for the last hour or so. He's not sure of the time - he prefers to keep his phone off when he's birding lest an alarm or his ringer goes off - but he knows he has been sitting very, very still for a very, very long time. Teddy's good at the sitting still, always has been. He likes the peace of it; the way even his blood feels as though it's paused in his veins.
The reason that Teddy is sitting very, very still is currently perched on the back of a wooden bench. A bird, no larger than a glass of red wine (and about the same shade as one) hops around on the arched slat, chirping; dancing. To most, it's a rather mundane happenstance. A bird on a bench - who cares? To Teddy, it's the perfect afternoon television show, and he'd followed this movie star all the way out here to watch.
' Out here ' being the local community garden. It's much larger than Teddy had anticipated - not that he'd been planning on coming at all. He'd actually been traipsing through the forest of trees just behind the fenced off space when he heard the familiar call of one of his favorite local birds and decided that, just this once, it was okay to break and enter.
(It's a community outdoor space. Surely it can't be illegal.)
Teddy's soon to find out either way. Behind him, steps crunch across the grass, the sound cutting through the relative silence of the space. There's no way to keep quiet and keep this incoming stranger from spooking the bird from it's perch. He has to try anyway. Teddy holds his hand up without turning around as he calls (as quietly as he can):
" Wait. "
There's a tense moment. Unfortunately, the bird has sensed a change, and it's flying away before Teddy can exhale. Shit.
Ah, well. He turns over his shoulder to meet eyes with the person - the man - who had approached. When Teddy speaks, it's softly.
" Sorry for trespassing. If you'll let me, I would like to stay for a bit longer and see if he comes back. "
