Ahhh can you write something with toshiro, rangiku (and shuhei/kira/renji) planning a surprise birthday party for momo 😀

Honestly, this was a lot of fun to write! I dunno if I’m really in love with how it turned out, but I’m definitely proud of it. I hope you enjoy!!

They each had a job. Toshiro was in charge of overall organization and appropriation of funds and materials. Rangiku and Shuhei were in charge of food and alcohol. Kira was in charge of discreetly handing out invitations and ominously staring at people while telling them that it was to be a surprise. And Renji, poor Renji was charged with keeping Momo busy the day of the party. Toshiro couldn’t help but wonder -- just how many ways could this go wrong?

The answer, he soon discovered, was a lot. Shuhei and Kira were performing their duties as expected -- the two were always serious and capable, and he appreciated them both for it immensely. After that, however, things began to go downhill. Rangiku arrived back at the Tenth Division headquarters with only about half of the alcohol that was originally planned -- evidently, the local bars didn’t like selling and the other alcohol being sold wasn’t good enough so without further hesitation, she grinned to Toshiro and wandered off muttering something about heading off to the World of the Living. She disappeared before he could stop her.

Renji on the other hand was suffering because, in order to keep the party a secret, everyone had decided to act as if it wasn’t Momo’s birthday, which means, he’s been wandering around the Seireitei all morning with an extremely depressed Fifth Division Lieutenant. The guilt ate away at him. Not to mention, Captain Kuchiki didn’t approve of Toshiro “stealing” (the Captain’s eye twitched at the thought -- Renji decided this of his own volition) his Lieutenant for something as foolish as a birthday party.

An hour before the party, Shuhei and Kira had both appeared to help him with the last of the decorations and to organize the food and start getting guests in place. The five of them had decided to do this in the first place after the events of Aizen’s defection -- she needed a chance to be reminded that she was loved and irreplaceable and meant more to people than just a pawn that could be so easily discarded. She had changed all of their lives for the better -- brought light into their lives and made them realize just how much they had to live for, with her there to stand by their side, so being here now was the least they could do.

Toshiro checked the clock again -- ten minutes before Renji was supposed to bring Momo around, and there was still no Rangiku. “Where did she run off to this time?” He was irritated and concerned; they had all worked so hard for this, and his only thought was the look of disappointment on Momo’s face if one of her closest friends ended up ditching a party for her. Just as he was about to start cursing her name, Rangiku appeared, all grins and arms filled with bags of alcohol -- there was a specific brand that Momo liked, and it was hard to find, but she had managed to find two bottles, just for her. And the three men there all smiled -- it was always the smallest most genuine gestures that surprised people, and Rangiku was always the best at those.

On pins and needles the entire day, Renji couldn’t be more thankful when he realized that it was time -- guiding Momo towards the Tenth Division’s Barracks, he talked about how he needed to discuss something with one of the officers there and he’d be grateful to her if she would come along. She agreed, meekly, he was certain that she was trying to hide just how hurt she was by all of her friends avoiding her, and forgetting her and the guilt in his stomach only knotted tighter -- he knew he had to keep it together, just a little longer and it would all be worth it. All the looks of sadness and longing and the loss that he could feel radiating from her.

As they approached the large meeting room Renji’s hands covered her eyes, “So, I know that today has been hard on you, and you think that we’ve all forgotten but…” Kira and Shuhei slide the doors open as Renji pulls his hands away. Momo’s eyes watered at the sight -- everyone was there; Toshiro and Rangiku and Kira and Shuhei and her Captain and the seated officers of the various divisions all cheering and wishing her a happy birthday. Her hands reached up and she clutched her chest.

She was home. And she was loved, so deeply loved.
