Rise Again.
Rise & shine! You get out of bed in the morning, brush your teeth, eat some breakfast, rush out the door, and take the kids to school – just like that, you’re off to work. Quite a routine - it’s like clockwork for you. Imagine that one day, it’s all taken away. The sink you brushed your teeth at is somewhere down the street, your kitchen table was obliterated, and nothing but the concrete rubble remains of your children’s school. How do you feel? What do you do?
For the families of Sto. Nino Elementary, that was their reality in November 2013 when their city was struck by the most powerful part (northern eyewall) of Typhoon Haiyan. With their community completely demolished, they started over and just two years later they have classrooms buzzing with excitement and some of the happiest children I’ve ever seen. What made this possible? How did they experience such devastation and still rise up to see so much promise?
Hope.
It’s setting in more and more each day. What we’re doing here, what Intel has done here – and the outpouring of gratitude the school has for us. Today, I was able to interview the Principal and one of their long-time teachers and it was surreal. These two care so much about the students and about their community – they've been through unimaginable devastation with the Typhoon and they are just eternally grateful for Intel’s help in not only rebuilding their physical school, but also bringing technology to propel these kids into a brighter future.
The filming today brought all this to light. As I stopped filming the teacher’s interview & removed her mic, she started to talk to me face-to-face. Camera away, just talking 1-on-1 and she began to cry. Happy tears welling up in her eyes and she put her arms around me and thanked me for being here, and for what Intel has done for them. Again and again saying how much they love Intel and how we are changing the future for these kids, how they can get more out of their lessons and give kids the ICT (Information & Communications Technology) skills they need to really make a difference in the world of tomorrow. I was able to film one of her students and I asked the (super adorable, but very shy) little girl if she wanted to say anything to her teacher. She turned to look at the teacher and softly said, “Thank you for teaching us everything we need. We love you.” *heart swoons*
In the interview sessions, the teacher and the principal couldn’t say enough heartfelt thanks to Intel. Honestly, I don’t feel worthy to accept all this praise because there have been so many others with Intel who have made this impression so far. So this is for you, the others who have been to the school before us with IESC and the Intel Foundation colleagues who helped in the early days. They are so thankful for your help. The theme carried through both interviews - Intel was the only company who came back after the initial Typhoon relief efforts. We said we would help and we have showed up for them in more ways than they could’ve imagined. It is moments like these I feel most proud to be a part of Intel. They’re so grateful to us, but I’m so grateful to them! I’ve laughed more here in 4 days than I have in years. They are filled with so much joy, even when surrounded by concrete ruins of what once was. The principal told me there were 4 students who did not make it out from the Typhoon alive, yet still he’s able to find a silver lining and tells me they were lucky to not be like the other schools – some of which lost more than 60 students. They have so few material luxuries, but are overflowing with happiness and love for one another. Between the overwhelming gratitude and the constant buzz of laughter and smiles around the school, this may give Disney a run for its money as the Happiest Place on Earth.
I have a challenge for you – yes, you, reading this blog…Why not live your life like this community? Just unconditionally happy. What do you have to lose? I know it’s hard to be happy in the face of difficult times, when life doesn’t go according to (our completely fantasized) plan. But, as cliché as it is, it could always be worse. At the end of the day you’re alive and someone loves you. Do you need anything more than that? Sto. Nino Elementary doesn’t.
The Principal shared this in closing, “Intel gave Sto. Nino the chance to rise again.” – but I have to disagree. Intel aided their efforts, but it’s the hope of these teachers and children here that truly made Sto. Nino rise again.
A few photos from our second day at school, capturing the awesome work from our team onsite at Sto. Nino Elementary. Training is in full swing for both the students and the teachers. It was amazing to watch the kids just beaming with excitement while playing with the computers.
Goal #1: Get them comfortable with these PC’s! Know what it can be used for and why it’ll make school more fun! “The computer is your friend!”
"LIFE IS SHORT. DO STUFF THAT MATTERS." - SIQI CHEN It's official! Today is the first day of this 2-week adventure we're on. I'm a whopping 34,009 feet in the air, making my way to Manila. Sally, our program manager, is on this flight with me and the excitement between us is palpable. What an opportunity to shift focus from the constant self-centered worrying/stress and instead focus on giving back to others! I hope to gain some renewed perspective from this trip; let go of the little things, I am fortunate to have the life I have. It's really pretty great. I need to channel my inner Taylor Swift and learn to "shake if off" more often! I am looking forward to the change we can make in this community, and couldn't be happier to spend it with 5 other compassionate, bright individuals. Only ~13 hours left until we make it to Manila... 👏🏼🙋🏻
