Review of How To Read a Book - The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading
There is so much information out there that professionals can be overwhelmed thinking about it. How can you hold ? Do you know how to read effectively? How to read a book that was originally written in 1940 and updated in 1972 is full of lots of useful information, and not the kind of book you read once . I thought in my second reading would be very useful, I have discussed the contents with a group of people , then and only then would I be able to truly enjoy the wealth of knowledge it contains. The main stated objective How to read a book, is " how to make good books teach us " if we are open to continuous learning and discovery . Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren define art read as " the process by which a mind that has nothing to operate , but readable symbols issue without outside help , it is by the power of their own operations. D mind will understand unless understanding ... " Adler and Van Doren suggest that before reading a book to decide whether you read for entertainment, information, or for the sake of understanding. Make this kind of distinction determines how you read the book . The authors describe four levels of reading a book reading - Primary Reading, Inspection reading , analytical reading and reading Syntopical . Primary Reading is the reading level you learn in elementary school . There are two types of reading Inspection (1 ) systematic skimming or pre - reading (2) reading the surface. Inspection reading, the emphasis is on time - make the most of a book in a short period of time. Analytical reading of the book is sort of make peace with him, determine the message of the book , criticizing the book and the author . Analytical reading is a very active kind of reading. And finally , reading syntopical or comparative reading, the most complex form of reading is reading several books on the same subject and put them against each other. If you actively read a book, you should be able to answer the following questions: - ( 1) What is the book? (2) What is said in detail, and how? (3) The book is true , in whole or in part ? (4) So what? If you are able to answer these questions, you really understand what the author is trying to say. Adler and Van Doren made an interesting comment . They suggest that if you read to become a better player, or in other words, reading for understanding and enlightenment , you can not read an article or a book. You should read the material spreads and grows your mind. I recommend this book , but be prepared to read at least twice to get the most out of it . This effort will save time later when the information is used to read other books
