Where and when: Blythe household, North Berwick, Scotland on May 25th.
Some months ago, Aindreis didn't think he'd ever be wobbling about in the streets of North Berwick ever again. Or anywhere else for that matter. But he'd also learned a few months ago that you can plan things and start imagining things for the future and it can all be gone in an instant. Revelation which had lead to today, in some kind of expected twist of faith.
Ever since his brother had announced his engagement, Andy had been so excited for the wedding. Rose was so sweet and his brother was so happy, how could he not? He'd spoken about it with Ali at length, and it had even lead to a discussion about their own thoughts on weddings. Just thinking about that conversation made Andy's fingers shake. Yet, the gift he had brought was the one they'd both chosen and just the thought of this weekend was difficult to bear. He had to fake it till he made it though, as there was no way in hell he'd risk ruining his brother's day, even by just being in a bad mood. He knew he couldn't keep going like this. The drinking, the self-destructive spiral—it had to stop. Not just for himself, but for Danny, who deserved a brother who could stand beside him proudly, not one who was barely holding it together.
Last Monday had already been difficult, with having to explain to his parents why Ali wasn't here and seeing them pretend they didn't like him all that much, which he knew was going to happen while also knowing his mother would send him a birthday card next month. He knew for a fact that Saturday, day of the ceremony, would be the worst, with all his family flying in, including people who knew Ali or at least of him. He knew what would happen and had been dreading it for months now. And he was so, so grateful that Amerie accepted to come with him. Alone, it would've been a nightmare.
In fact, he was heading to see her right this instant. It was late, and he felt bad having to disturb her but it was important. He'd left the Ship Inn drunker than he'd planned and had a hard time making his way home. Catching a glimpse of himself in the window of some house on the way as he tripped, he realised that he couldn't keep doing this shit. Especially not this weekend. Not to Danny. So stumbling around, he made his way home, and silently got upstairs. For a second, he hesitated to just go in his room but he continued and leaned against the wall next to Amerie's door and knocked, hoping he wasn't waking her up.
“Amerie, it’s me,” he whispered, his voice a little hoarse.
