“Okay, Kale, who is this amazing guy I just have to meet, and why does this have to happen right now?”
Kale was a nineteen-year-old intern at the radio station, who had been under Zadie’s tutelage for about six months. Zadie liked to think of herself as a wise and caring mentor figure, but knew enough about teenagers to know that Kale probably thought of her as a lame adult. (The way she saw it, though, no one whose parents named them Kale got to tell her shit.) All week, Zadie had had the feeling he was up to something -- he seemed entirely too cheerful lately, and she was pretty sure he was texting more than usual, too.
So when he said he had a friend who was just dying to go out with her, she knew she should’ve been suspicious. Especially since most of his friends were, like, twelve. But her overdeveloped sense of curiosity was definitely going to get her killed one day anyway -- might as well see if that day was today.
“I know it seems a bit weird, but he just got off work, and this seemed like as good a time to introduce you as any,” Kale said. “He’s in the break room waiting for you.”
“...If this is a joke and there’s a drug dealer, or a teenager, or God forbid a Republican in there, I’m gonna kick your ass,” was the last thing Zadie said before entering the break room.
Inside, she found a makeshift “romantic” dinner, and someone she already knew.
Before she could even register, she heard someone shove a chair under the doorknob outside, as Kale shouted, “Sorry!”, and two sets of feet running away.
