Just a quick impression from last night's game. In multiple conversations throughout the years I've told anyone who would listen that MLB should get rid of interleague. Retire it for 15 or 20 years and then bring it back for the next generation of fans. I personally find interleague to be stale and would rather the league go back to the balanced schedule. But after seeing the crowds last night for Yankees vs Mets, they'll never get rid of interleague. There's too much revenue to be made. Plus I'm sure the same thing happens when the Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers and Giants (to name only a few teams) pack opposing league teams home parks. In terms of the number of fans, it really felt like a playoff atmosphere. The last time I saw the stadium that full and took so long to get in was during David Ortiz's last appearance at Yankee Stadium. Interleague Play

When it comes to my baseball, I’m a purist. But, when it comes to interleague play, I like it. 

There has to be an exception that proves the rule.

One of my stated baseball goals was to see every MLB team play live and in person and I achieved that goal, for good, in 2015. Part of the reason I was able to do this is that interleague games brought American League closer to the N.L. towns in the South and lower midwest.

To that end, when I finally saw the 30th and final team on my checklist, it was the White Sox. I saw them “versing” the Cardinals (albeit in the A.L. park).

Closer to home, just this past weekend, I drove down to Braves Country and enjoyed watching them take on the Baltimore Orioles. Previously, that just wouldn’t have been possible (except in the World Series).

But starting with my childhood, I always kind of like the O’s. So, it was fun to get to see them this past weekend.

Over the years, I have seen a number of interleague games, including:

Indians at Reds

Mets at Blue Jays

Pirates at Rays

And I’ve seen a bunch in Atlanta. Maybe it is the novelty of the match-up, but I really like seeing these match-ups. There are only so many “Marlins at Braves” games that can hold your interest.

As we head toward the beginning of July, it seems MLB has put a number of these pairings on the schedule. Over July 4th, the Braves face the Yankees. Meanwhile, the Nationals are playing the Red Sox. 

And whereas this week’s Nats at Rays isn’t a showstopper, there are some really good upcoming AL vs NL faceoffs leading up to the MLB All Star Game.

If it boosts interest and brings fans to the ballparks, I’m all for it. 

Now bringing the designated hitter rule to the National League permanently, that’s another matter altogether.
