United States – Since 2013, the United States has raised its concerns with Russia regarding Russian development of a ground-launched cruise missile (NATO designator: SSC-8, Russian designator: 9M729) with a range capability between 500 and 5,500 kilometers on repeated occasions. Today in 1987, Gorbachev and Reagan Agree to Reduce Nuclear Arms for the First Time

The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces, or INF, treaty was signed on December, 8th 1987 and ratified March 14, 1988. 

At the signing ceremony, President Reagan and Secretary General Gorbachev exchanged some light-hearted banter that gave a glimpse into the relationship that yielded the first agreement between the Cold War superpowers to reduce nuclear arms:

Reagan:  We have listened to the wisdom in an old Russian maxim. And I'm sure you're familiar with it, Mr. General Secretary, though my pronunciation may give you difficulty. The maxim is: Dovorey no provorey -- trust, but verify.

Gorbachev: You repeat that at every meeting. [Laughter]

Reagan: I like it. [Laughter]

By 1991 approximately 2,700 Missiles had been destroyed.
