y'know, there are no unkind things that i have to say about this internship. the people that i have worked with have been so, so kind and understanding when i ask questions or have stumbled on something - they take the time to sit and explain a topic in multiple ways and draw it out and bring me over to a physical item to show me things. they have helped with my briefing and have edited and tinkered and helped make it look really, really good. both groups took me aside yesterday and said that we were all going to lunch, so now it's turned into an 8 person event. i'm really glad that i had this opportunity. it's been so fun and i'm honestly sad to be leaving the office, but i'm gonna try to keep my Real Adult Sleep Schedule and handle my senior year well and i think that i would like to come back as a Real Live Engineer. i'm very fortunate. i am very fortunate. (also @ anyone who is doing STEM stuff and is looking for an internship, pls apply for NREIP it is so good!!!)

Intern Gothic

The conference room is empty. The phone is lit green. No one is on the other line. The cube farm is silent as the grave. You hear the click of keyboards and the movement of a chair. The cube farm is empty. Your cube isn't actually yours. A loaner, they say. You can see its previous tenant's belongings displayed like they still use the space. They won't mind, you're told, and they let you put your belongings there, too. The space is colder than usual. It is Friday. The cube farm is empty. The cube farm is silent. You have a question. You need a form signed. The cube farm is empty. There are no answers today. There is music in the mornings, heralded by bugles and silence. It is muffled, so barely audible that you wonder if it is real when you hear it through the walls of your cube. Do not move if you hear it, do not move if you are outside. The music follows you, soft and unfaltering. Do not move if you hear it, do not move if you are outside. You have a lunch date. You stand to leave, and are immediately pulled away from your cube. There is a meeting. You have a breakfast date. There is a meeting. It is Monday. There is a meeting. It is Friday. There is a meeting. There is a meeting. There is always a meeting. You do not remember what the meeting was about. You took notes. They are gone. The phone is still green. There is breathing on the other line. Your division is located in the basement. You do not know how to get there, save through a back door that you cannot find unless you circle the building. Step down, the walls say. Step down. Low ceiling, says the wall when you find a way to the basement from the front door. Watch your step. There is a door that leads to an elevator that you don't think exists. There are no lights, and the arrow keys remain dim. Something green blinks. It doesn't stop. There are no lights. It is cold. Keep the doors shut, they tell you quietly. Keep them closed.

ok lmao so i started my internship, had a kiosk set up, and then on wednesday i was moved to another building bc that's where most of the folks i'll be working with are located. it's in a basement and it's dead silent even when people are there bc they're just quiet in general but my project leaders or w/e shouted for me over the cubes and were like 'teresa ur acting for the whole program tomorrow bc we're gonna be gone' and i immediately said NOPE so instead they told me to just go wherever i want, i decided to head back up to the other building bc i get signal and it's also not silent as a grave, and they decided after that for me to do some paperwork to get internet access, and then i could basically fuck off and go explore the whole navy base and then go to my dad's work and call it work hours :') this is great

Soooo exciting day!! I got the internship!! Which is putting it lightly. I thought I was going to an informational meeting with lots of other potential interns, but no. They had 32 juniors and seniors apply for this, and they picked 7 of them, and me. A freshman, who didn’t even apply, just talked to the lady at orientation for five minutes. I asked ‘why me’ after the meeting, and she said I had presented myself well and seemed enthusiastic about the job. …. Okay! I’ll take it!!

I have to work 6 office hours a week, and go to all the sporting events, 3 hours before kick off for football games, 2 hours before basketball games, and an hour before soccer and vollleyball games. I get to be down on the sidelines with the players, and/or up in the press box depending on my assignments. Also we were given long term assignments to work on during our office hours if we don’t have a current assignment, so my two are reaching the 55+ demographic and promotions for the first women’s basketball game to increase attendance. I feel like I’m going to have to do a ton of research into what the marketing team is already doing, and what other successful colleges and teams do. This is going to be hard. But fun. I’m excited!

Also, our game day apparel needs black or khaki pants. So, tomorrow, I’m going to learn how to take a bus to the mall and back. I actually called my parents to tell them about the internship, and then ended up spending half an hour on the phone with them studying the bus system website and deciding exactly how/when/where to go. To be honest, I never would have figured it out on my own. But this should be an adventure since I’ve never ridden a bus… or gone shopping by myself… or used a credit card, but that part I’m excited about! It’s all new and exciting!!

I also read my syllabus for my first class tomorrow. It’s History 101, and… wow. Going from never reading the book, never taking notes, never studying, and barely paying attention in class and still getting 100s to having to read and take notes on the content before the lecture, taking more notes in the lecture, and having exams every week in recitation that aren’t multiple choice, this is going to be different. And this is only for one class. Wow. My schedule is going to be packed.
