Our Father, who art in heaven, Harold be thy name
So today's opening activity for all of the classes I was in was to draw the "ideal math student." After everyone came up and showed what their groups had drawn on a projector, we realized they all drew dudes. My cooperating teacher and I decided to give them a short piece of homework: find a notable female mathematician from any era, give us their name and three other facts about them. I also challenged them to find one outside the US and Europe.
I also was able to get involved with the classes, so as far as first days go this was better than I could have imagined this going.
Rehab and First November Weekend!
The past few days have been so much fun here in the life of an intern! Last week I finished up my first week in my rehab rotation at MountainView Rehab. Anna, the RD on staff, is absolutely incredible with everyone she works with, and she has such a warm personality. I love working there! I've gotten to see a pretty wide variety of patients, including an 8-month-old today! SO CUTE!
This past weekend was also a lot of fun! Friday night, a group of interns (including myself) went out to dinner at a local Italian place just down the hill. It was phenomenal! They make their own noodles for all of their pasta dishes, so of course I had to try one! I chose the Pasta di Pesto and it was really good! Their pesto was also homemade, and it had a hint of creaminess, so it was a little different than I expected. Whoever comes to visit me next, we may be going here :) Also, they bring you a big thing of bread (also homemade) that was quite delectable ... Needless to say, I was stuffed. One of the other interns, Steph, really likes anchovies, which I have never tried. I was curious so I tried a piece of one and... ick. I don't like them. Not even a little. The fishy taste doesn't bother me, but it was like liking a salt block (which no...I haven't done) but it was way saltier than anything I like to eat.
Saturday, the girls and I headed downtown for the weekly farmer's market. I bought a big butternut squash, which I turned into two giant recipes! I made a low fat butternut squash soup with chorizo sausage and that turned out amazingly! Originally I only put three sausages in it, but Kate (meat lover that she is) suggested adding the last two, and that made all the difference in flavor! It's definitely really good now! The second recipe is one that I've been wanting to try for quite some time. It's called Baked Pasta with Butternut Squash and Ricotta and it's good, but a little flavorless. I realized that the recipe called for thyme (which I don't have) and forgot to replace it with something else. The cheese in it is good though (of course)!
Saturday night I got to see two friends from back home, which was really nice! They came down to see the game, and then came over for game night with my roommates and I! I had a ton of fun :)
As for the next few days, I have a lot of work to do on my Clinical Case Study. I know I have a lot done, but I need to go meet with the MD and talk with him about his thoughts on the patient. Also, I need to get a good enough draft together to send to my preceptor. My goals for the paper are to have a good draft put together by this Friday so I can print it off at the hospital. This weekend I want to review and choose areas that need expansion/changing. Next week (my first week in the Trauma/Neurology rotation) I plan to do the expansions on sections that need more work, changing things, etc. during the first half of the week. The second half of the week is going to be spent purely on formatting. That Friday (5 days before I turn it in) I want it completely done to print at the hospital. Then that weekend I will be putting in a pretty binder and have it ready to go! Then I just have to put together my PowerPoint and prepare my 60-minute presentation! Woohoo!
Speaking of that... I should probably get back to work!

Guys in the office: Hey Mare, there are two weeks worth of contracts today because next week we'll all be at SXSW
Me: Jerks
Just kidding, I love these guys...but I'm seriously bummed I'm missing SXSW for the 3rd yr in a row. I just want to go home, be warm, be surrounded my live music for a week, make new friends and party with my old ones. Here's hoping that's how next year goes.
My mom had a big ass cake delivered to the place where I intern.
All the guys in the office made it a big surprise. Never have seen them so sneaky. Gotta loved 'em.
Already one of the best birthdays I've had.....And it is still a day away
