Stray From The Path - Euthanasia About five years ago, New York nu-metalcore band Stray From The Path put out of the song “Goodnight Alt-Right,” and it caused quite a stir within the metalcore community, specifically from the right-wing Trump-loving fans that somehow didn’t realize Stray was a left-leaning band, and got offended at their lyrics about punching Nazis (which is always a good thing). The album that song is on, 2017′s Only Death Is Real, is a really solid album, and I was super into that record a few years back, specifically when their last album, 2019′s Internal Atomics, was released. I hadn’t listened to Stray From The Path in a very long time before Only Death Is Real; I discovered them in 2009, when Make Your Own History came out, and I liked that album a lot, but they were more of a hardcore punk / metalcore band back then. They didn’t have any nu-metalcore in their sound, but that changed in 2013 when they released Anonymous. They released a couple of albums after that, but Only Death Is Real is the album that got me back into them. If anything, that record is a scathing takedown of Trump’s presidency, as well as the rise of right-wing extremism that followed and has since dominated the news and the Republican party as a whole, all the while utilizing some awesome grooves, breakdowns, and riffs, along with some killer vocals from Drew York. Internal Atomics wasn’t as good, but it was still a good album, nonetheless, and picked up where the last album left off. Fast forward three years, as well as another presidential election, a pandemic, and many other awful things, we got a new album from these guys, entitled Euthanasia. I wasn’t originally going to listen to this, only because my biggest problem with Internal Atomics is that it sounded just like Only Death Is Real, but it didn’t add anything to that sound, or do anything differently. Sure, the lyrics were pretty on the nose leftist ideology, and I’m all for that, but the music itself wasn’t as interesting as that record. I ended up deciding to check it out, because not much came out last week that I personally wanted to hear, but for being one of the only albums I really cared about, I’m kind of underwhelmed. Euthanasia isn’t a bad album, but out of their three most recent records, this is their weakest by far, and it’s because it, too, sounds like everything else they’ve done since 2013. It’s just another generic nu-metalcore album with solid vocals, riffs, and breakdowns, along with lyrics that tackle things like the US military sending innocent kids to die in battle, police brutality, and more relevant topics at hand, but it’s just the same things we’ve heard them do over and over again. There’s nothing new or interesting here, and it’s not executed well enough to make me care that much about it. I like this album, and every time I hear it, I enjoy it, but I’m not clamoring to go back to this. I wish I was, because its sound is good, but I just have no desire to listen to this when everything else they’ve done in the last decade sounds just like this, let alone a little better. If you couldn’t tell, I’m mixed on Euthanasia. I don’t outright dislike this album, but I’m also underwhelmed a majority of the time while listening to it. It has some great riffs, breakdowns, and vocals, along with in your face and on the nose lyrics, but it just all sounds so tired, familiar, and overdone. I’ve heard all of this before from them, and it doesn’t sound fresh anymore. It’s like having a steak that’s really good from a restaurant, but the second time you go back, you’re just served the exact same steak, only reheated, instead of cooked fresh, so it doesn’t taste as good as it did before. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but not quite as good as the last time. You can taste the difference, and that’s how I feel here; it’s a good album, and if this is your first introduction to this band, it’s a good one, but I’ve heard a lot better from this band. Only Death Is Real is probably their best album, and I think part of that stems from the rage and vitriol that they were feeling when Trump was elected, as were a lot of people (and bands), but it seems like their rage has gotten less and less interesting over time. The messages they have on this record are good, but they also don’t take them anywhere interesting, or do anything interesting with them, which I can also say for the music itself. This just sounds like a typical nu-metalcore album, and that’s fine if that’s what you’re into, but there’s not much here that I haven’t heard from them already. I don’t know, folks, if you want to check it out, I’d say go ahead, but if you want to hear a better version of this album, just listen to their last couple of albums (either for the first time, or listen to them again).
