International differences

Hey dear followers. Who is like me and likes to learn about little differences between countries? I'm talking about everyday stuff that is not necessarily related to wealth. Things you probably don't think of... On my TV 90% of the programme is children's TV... (the only show for adults I really watch is Lucifer) And I'm always shocked how the shows consider American traditions and everyday things to be present all over the world.

So who wants to join me with some questionnaires (a.k.a "ask meme")? The topics that came to my mind would be shopping, school, birthdays, holiday traditions ... I wouldn't want to put questions in it that would be answered with "I can't as I'm too poor" as I don't mean to depress but rather expand our horizon

Mad Dogs and Englishmen

In the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books, the author will often mention how hot it gets in Botswana and the Kalahari, how searing it is, and how lovely the rainy season is when it gives some respite of coolness. Maybe it’s because I got into those book because my Grandma, who lived in Tucson, loved them, but I always imagined Botswana to be similar to Tucson, with it’s searing heat and final monsoon season.  Curious, I looked up the average high temperatures in Botswana, assuming they would be like Tucson, with an average high in the hottest month of 100°, and sometimes even hotter than that. I found, amongst other sources, this: https://www.weather-atlas.com/en/botswana/gaborone-climate. 90.9° is the average high. 90.9!!!!??? I mean, yeah, the average temperature for the coldest month is still high at 73.2°, so it never really gets cold, but 90?  .9? That’s not hot by any stretch of the Arizonan imagination. I guess it’s because the author is British and moved to Edinburgh, so he has a really skewed sense of what is uncomfortably warm weather, but still. I can never trust him again.
