A day late and a dollar short - I am rather behind on my social media, but I will catch up soon. Yesterday was International Clouded Leopard Day! ☁️🐆 #AnimalFact: Clouded leopards can open their mouth wider than any living cat species. AND in relation to skull size, they have the largest canine teeth of any modern day cat! Because of this, some people even like to call them the modern day saber toothed cat! ☁️🐆 These amazingly acrobatic and beautiful cats native to forests in Southeast Asia can be very difficult to study in the wild. They are very well camouflaged, rather elusive and mostly active at night. Thankfully there are many different kinds of tools and techniques that researchers have come up with to help better understand the clouded leopard’s life in the wild. ♥️ Those who conduct research on clouded leopards, use camera traps, fecal data analysis and record footprints for a database. I have been fortunate enough to have spent time with many different clouded leopards. And I have meet and worked with some incredible people who are working nonstop to save them from becoming extinct. Please follow and support the @ptdefiancezoo, @nashvillezoo and @smithsonianzoo. And you too can do something every day, right in your hometown... You see, #CloudedLeopards face many significant threats in the wild. Their native S.E. Asia habitat is experiencing large scale degradation due to logging and large scale agricultural areas, that includes massive palm oil plantations. Once logged and turned into agriculture/palm plantations, the habitat is gone and so are all of the animals that lived there. This is where you can make a difference. Be an informed consumer. Take the time to know what is in the products you buy. Support companies who decide not to use palm oil. It’s not easy. Palm oil can be in lotion, shampoo, dish soap, ice cream, cookies and many other foods. Yes, it takes extra effort. But my clouded leopard buddies would appreciate it. Another fun #AnimalFact for #InternationalCloudedLeopardDay. Let’s talk camouflage, shall we? Many species lack the receptor cells that pick up shades of green. Therefore the brain perceives greens as gray. The first photo shows the side of a clouded leopard as it was moving through some green underbrush. The second photo is the same picture, with saturation removed. This is probably not 100% accurate to what it looks like to some species... Celebration International Clouded Leopard Day August 4, 2021

International Clouded Leopard Day (ICLD) is a day of international awareness and an attempt to increase the profile of Clouded leopards both in captivity and in the wild. Organizers of ICLD are Lauren Amos and Dan Kemp, two carnivore keepers from Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, who work with this shy and elusive species on a daily basis.

ICLD at the park included talks, tours, and activities for all ages but the day didn 19t just exist in Kent, this day of celebration reached zoos in the USA and Asia.

The objective is to raise awareness and unite conservation thinking amongst zoological collections, charities, NGO 19s, businesses and all those with an interest in one of the world`s most beautiful and iconic cats, the Clouded leopard. Every species on earth has its own unique role to play in maintaining an over-arching ecological balance both in life and in nature.

Whether this is through managing prey based animal numbers, ensuring seed dispersal, looking after grasslands or simply by maintaining a healthy genetic diversity that ensures the survival of any given species. Everything has a purpose.

The juggernaut that is humankind continues to overwhelm and overpower nature at a pace that is both relentless and insatiable. We become immune to the warnings of those who foretell us of the loss of species, forests and ocean life.

The hope is that in some small way raising the awareness of the plight of the Clouded leopard may somehow help this most beautiful of cats in the wild and provide us with a greater understanding of its needs.
