A Diplomat’s Perspective: Was the Russian Invasion of Ukraine Inevitable? With Yuriy Sergeyev

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine about two months ago the world has been shocked by the atrocities committed by Russian troops. The documented evidence includes pillage, torture and rape, mass executions of civilians, and bombardments of residential areas. Almost 5 million people have fled the country. The questions on everyone’s mind are: Was it possible to prevent such horrors? Could diplomacy have played a more significant role to prevent the invasion? And, most importantly, is a diplomatic solution still possible. We will hear from the former Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Nations, Mr. Yuriy Sergeev via Zoom from Kyiv, Ukraine.

International Scene Lecture: Tomorrow the World A Discussion of U.S. Global Strategy with Stephen Wertheim

Wertheim is a historian of the United States in the world and analyst of contemporary American grand strategy. He is a Senior Fellow in the American Statecraft Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He is also a Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Center for Global Legal Challenges at Yale Law School. He specializes in U.S. foreign relations and international order from the late nineteenth century to the present. In his book, “Tomorrow, the World: The Birth of U.S. Global Supremacy” (2020), he reveals how U.S. leaders made a sudden decision to pursue global military dominance, which they had previously regarded as unnecessary at best and imperialistic at worst.
