— in which children's books are there "mucklor"?

“MUCKLORNA” – IN ENGLISH KNOWN AS “mucks” – was created by Swedish author Sven Nordqvist (1946–) for his children’s books of Pettson och Findus in 1984. The books are about a man, his cat and their adventures on a farm. The creatures have existed in every book, but it was until När Findus var liten och försvann (2001) the name mucklor was used. 

What a muckla is, is not entirely known. As depicted by the books, mucklor are small animals, usually, they stand on their hind legs, have long ears and a long nose, and a tail. Their fur (?) can vary in colour: green, orange and red are some examples. It can be suggested that “mucklor” is the name for their species, as when two mucklor are talking to each other they mention their names, Plums and Kuling. 

A thing that is interesting about the creatures is that Findus – besides the reader – is the only one who can see them. Pettsson cannot, which has created some problems as mucklor likes to steal Pettsson’s socks for fun. The mucklor never seems to speak or affect the story either, although they are often seen hiding on every page. In fact, the only book in the series where they actually do interact with the story is in the before mentioned När Findus var liten och försvann (2001).

The book was published in 2001. It tells the story of when Pettsson decided to get a cat and the first time after Findus moved in. Findus, as the curious cat he is, decided to go on a little adventure around his house. Going through a hole in the stair to the attic, Findus sees two mucklor and greets them. The text does not mention them and instead only says what the cat does next. He continues forward and is now at the back of the house, where a badger scares him into a wooden box. He starts to cry but then he hears small voices. This is the first time mucklorna are mentioned:

There were two such animals that lived in the house. Findus had met such before. They could appear anywhere, so he didn’t think it was strange that they were suddenly inside his box.

Mucklorna tries to comfort him and they tell a tale of when they found a cat in a box. “Once upon a time there was a muckla” the other one says. Findus asks if they can help Pettsson find him, but they answer that they can’t as Pettsson cannot see them. Although, they can give him clues as to where Findus is. 

At the same time as Findus is being comforted by mucklorna, Pettsson is looking for him. He has looked inside the house but cannot find the cat, so he needs to go outside and keep looking. But when he is looking for his socks and shoes, he can’t find them either. As mentioned before, mucklorna likes to steal Pettsson’s things and put them in a new place. Pettson walks outside to his garden and sees his shoes and socks in the grass laid out like arrows pointing to the corner of the house. There he finds more of his things before he sees the badger (which runs away) and soon he discovers Findus in the box.

It was historically called "consumption" due to the weight loss. Infection of other organs can cause a wide range of symptoms. Tuberculosis is spread from one person to the next through the air when people who have active TB in their lungs cough, spit, speak, or sneeze. People with latent TB do not spread the disease.      THE “WHITE PLAGUE” IS A term used as a nickname given to the infectious disease Tuberculosis. It was called the “white plague” about how pale the sufferer’s skin became after the illness would manifest. Another word used is “consumption”.

Just as “white plague” used to refer to a symptom of the disease, “consumption” was about a large amount of weight loss, making it appear as if the sufferer was slowly wasting away (Wikipedia). But, also looking at the root of the word can give an idea of its usage; con is a Latin root meaning “completely”, that word has a link to the phrase sumere which means “to take up from under” (Wikipedia).

Phthisis (Φθισις) is a Greek word for consumption and has been used since Ancient Greece when Hippocrates described a disease as “weakness of the lung” (Journal of Military and Veterans’ Health, 2014). Phthisis is also the old term for pulmonary tuberculosis, the type of tuberculosis which involves the lungs, with symptoms such as chest pain and prolonged coughs (Wikipedia).

Both “consumption” and phthisis were terms used during the seventeenth and the eighteenth century, until the mid-nineteenth century when Johann Lukas Schönlein coined the term tuberculosis (Journal of Preventive Medicine and Hygiene, 2017). Although, even after the new term was coined “consumption” was still used as the lay term for the disease (Journal of Military and Veterans’ Health, 2014). It would take another forty-three years, when Robert Koch discovered the M. tuberculosis, for the term “tuberculosis” to be exclusively used for the disease (Today I Found Out, 2014).

china, 1931. one of the most famous bans of alice's adventures in wonderland was that of china's 1931 ban. it was not banned in the whole of china, but mainly in the province of hunan. the reason was because general ho chien believed that giving animals the ability to speak like humans were an insult to humans. he also feared that if children were to read the novel they would regard animals as being on the same level as humans, which he himself regarded as "disastrous" (wikipedia).

united states, 1960s. about a decade after the disney's 1951 animated adaptation of the novel was released, it was met again with dismay, from parents this time. as a culture-change was happening during the 1960s united states, some parents thought the novel––and the film––was encouraging drug use (buzz bookstore). citing the caterpillar absolem, who uses a hookah, as a reason banning the book (her campus).
