Yep.
This is a real, sincere retort a hardcore gamer and “totalbiscuit” fan just made in attempts to dismiss another person’s feminism as the product of an inferior mind and I thought it deserved framing for the museum of ineptitude
*Sorry I mistook said hardcore gamer for a guy at first, I misread a thing.
Sandra Lee - The Beginning - Featuring Jim81Jim (InternetAristocrat's old account)
Because I'm an asshole who enjoys ruining people's childhoods, I'm going to use an extract from one of my favorite games of all time (or, more accurately, the shitty but gorgeously animated OVA based on one of my favorite video games of all time) to prove a point. To take out any semblance of subtlety (mostly because I don't think social justice warriors are capable of subtlety), I changed all the uses of the word humans to white people in the pictures above. Everything else is captioned correctly. The game/OVA is Tales of Symphonia, and there'll obviously be major plot spoilers. The two boys in the scene above, Genis (grey hair) and Mithos (yellow hair), are half-elves, which is the most hated and oppressed race in this universe. Understandably, half-elves are a bit skeptical of humans and elves (especially humans), because they're used to a lot of racism from them. However, you might notice that Genis, while having a prejudice towards humans (he mostly evolves past this in the game, but the OVA chose to cut most of this out, grrr), tries to look at things reasonably and say that not all humans are bad - he has a number of very good friends, such as the referenced Lloyd, who are human. Mithos, on the other hand, tries to discourage Genis from this way of thinking, saying that it's better if Genis hates all humans by default in order to avoid being hurt. He seems to fail to notice how much his words hurt Genis, and indeed, in later scenes, it's made extremely apparent that Mithos cares more about recruiting like-minded half-elves into his agenda than he does about said half-elves' feelings or best interests. In fact, it's shown that he treats his own half-elf underlings like disposable garbage, killing them brutally for the most minor of offenses. In my mind, Mithos represents the typical social justice warrior. I think that's why I always hated him so much. He claims to mean well, and maybe he even does to an extent, but he has so much hatred and bitterness inside him, and it's revealed later that his 'solution' to end racism (IE, turning everyone into the same emotionless, apathetic race, getting rid of all diversity and individual form of expression - gee, doesn't that sound familiar?) is nothing more than a selfish ploy to bring back his dead sister. He also fed and encouraged the hatred and segregation between humans and half-elves for centuries (again, doesn't that sound familiar?), killing countless innocents from both races in the process, because he needed to in order to revive his sister (Symphonia's plot is pretty convoluted, but it's a J-RPG, so it stands to reason :P). In the end, Mithos flat-out says that he doesn't care if the entire world dies, as long as he gets what he wants. Genis, meanwhile, represents a mostly innocent victim of society. Sure, he's a little racist, but in time he gets over this and realizes (correctly) that him hating humans will only make things worse for everyone (at least, he does in the game, grrr). Mithos, the social justice warrior, tries to recruit Genis into his corrupted ideology. When Genis and others reject his ideology, Mithos throws a tantrum and tries to play the victim and guilt-trip them into seeing things his way (again, doesn't that sound familiar?). To me, this whole thing paints a startlingly accurate parallel to how social justice warriors act in real life. They claim to fight against racism and other injustices, but in reality they do nothing but feed such injustices in order to further their own selfish agendas, hurting thousands of innocent victims of said injustices in the process. Hating white people half-elves on sight didn't help anyone in Symphonia's universe, and indeed just made the problem much worse. And yes, Symphonia also made an effort to point out that humans, elves and half-elves must all change their ways, not just the half-elves. I really have to wonder if the writers of Symphonia looked to Academia or other such places for inspiration while writing. Or maybe they were able to see into the future and witness the utter lunacy that is tumblr social 'justice.' Either way, I find the whole thing simultaneously hilarious and worrisome. I'm also somewhat depressed that I'm looking so heavily into a video game meant for young teens, but hey, this is tumblr, after all. :D
