Wrongful TechExpectations
Technology has been questioned repeatedly regarding the validity of the content found through Internet search engines. Content and the overwhelming Internet database adds to the stress that teachers feel to use technology in their classrooms. Content and research ability on educational sites has become more of a concern since our reliance on test scores has heightened. So many students have easy access to the Internet but without proper guidance, they can get lost so easily just playing games rather than researching thought provoking content. Teachers are always looking to provide their students with the best version of educational information and educational technology has become a major part of this movement. Teachers do not have to fear being replaced by the computer just yet, but they do have to guide their students carefully through the Internet. Students need to learn how to use the Internet to research, organize their work, write professionally, and collaborate and connect with others. Report cards and tests do not collect this type of real world data and this is why we need teachers to be at the head of the classroom guiding students through the Internet and all it has to offer. Our profession gets a head start to teach these students how to be ‘real world’ ready. The Internet and the ability to post and gather information so quickly is beneficial to our students, but we need to ensure they are utilizing it properly.
