I’m writing a blog post about what my experience was like interning for the United Nations, and I want to know what YOU want me to answer!
Help. I have to apply for internships, and I have no idea how. I haven't done anything like this before (I'm in my 40s, currently unemployed but in grad school, taught for years and years but got that job pretty much right out of college). I have some contact names and emails from a list on the grad school website, but it is all up to me to broach the subject and get everything in place myself. My advisor is notoriously never available. The names are the heads of the department at the various workplaces. I don't want to cold-call them with this. The listings don't give a preferred contact method or anything. Do I email? Snail mail? "Dear business person, please give me an internship! I need it to graduate! I am very old and poor and confused!" is about all my panicking self can come up with right now. Do any of you who have been through this have advice?
What exactly have I been busy with?
I've gotten a couple of Asks about my last post and which organization I'm interning with, so I'll just answer that here. It's actually a collaboration between CAIR, the JACL, and Kizuna. Basically, I'm taking care of the logistical specifics of their Bridging Communities Program. As for how I landed the position, I was essentially in the right place at the right time. Their intern for this cycle quit a couple of weeks ago and they wanted someone who was familiar with the way it all works, so they asked me if I'd like to take over, and here we are :)
The one frustration I have is transfer applications. We've reached the end of March and nobody's answered me yet. Their deadline for responses is the end of April, so the next four weeks are going to turn me into a nervous mess. But you know, iA Khair. Just pray for me guys. Please? :)
