"IRQ 9 Network" by Master Boot Record - From "Interrupt Request" (2017)
MASTER BOOT RECORD - INTERRUPT REQUEST
I found out about the prolific and solely instrumental (and I believe entirely programmed as well) project MASTER BOOT RECORD last year through their Bandcamp and talked about their weird marriage of chiptune and melodic death metal on C:\>COPY *.* A: /V that year. While not always the most digestible or the most human-sounding music, its modern, synthetic approach to metal was at least an intriguing and unique experience, even if prototypic and not exactly full of the same kind of appeals found in most metal.
The project’s first project this year (as I imagine there to potentially be more), INTERRUPT REQUEST is a doozy. At 73 minutes, it’s a bit much to sit through, but it does capture the essence of MASTER BOOT RECORD. The album does, though, give off the impression that this is only an indulgent novelty project, when there is truly a lot of ground that can be tread with this more electronic-friendly, synth-friendly style of metal. It’s not to say there aren’t enjoyable grooves on here or intricate synth leads. It’s just a quite homogeneous mix of it and a lot to handle for over an hour. I discovered the project through its debut album C:\>CHKDSK /F, and I think that album showed the potential this style has a little bit better than this one here. It’s clearly a project that bases much of its appeal on a pretense of deep understanding of computer programming (which I do not have), but for those with an understanding of computer programming and an appreciation for the technicality of chiptune it may connect more.
