On Fatphobia and Intersectionality
I’m not going to go barging into the “pink tax” post because the pink tax is absolutely a thing and I’m going to stay in my lane.
However there are a couple of comments on that thread that imply that fat men don’t have any problems at all in this area. We do. “Big and tall” prices are much higher than their equivalent “acceptable” sizes; I found half a dozen examples on Walmart.com and JCPenny’s in just a few searches. Price differences ranged from 17% for plain 501 jeans to 35% for t-shirts. And when I started to compare prices on equivalent items between Walmart/Penny’s and actual Big and Tall stores the differences got even higher, up to 40% for things like slacks and dress shirts.
Yes, all of the prices were lower than prices for women’s clothing. As I said, the pink tax is real. But the indisputable existence of the pink tax doesn’t mean that doesn’t mean fat men aren’t impacted by fatphobia, and that we aren’t being punished by not meeting an unrealistic and oppressive standard.
