Preparing the Interview Portfolio
Now that the cover letter and résumé got our foot in the door and the online portfolio intrigued them enough to meet us… the interview is the next step. If prepping for the interview isn’t nerve racking enough, creating the interview portfolio can be even harder. The portfolio must portray the correct message of our creativity, skills, and work style to the audience. Select quality over quantity and keep it diverse with different types of design work. Also stack the portfolio in your favor with only the best work and by placing a strong beginning, middle, and end piece depending on how many pieces of work are included.
After creating the portfolio, we must prepare on how to present it during the interview. Always explain your design work as if it is a case study; describe the process of how it became the end design. What were some successes and failures? How were problems solved? Were there any prototypes, wireframes, or scrapped visuals? Also in the end with your design piece, what were you trying to accomplish? As a designer, if your design does not improve the user’s experience, it is purely decorative and useless. Then when presenting the work, define the goal/mission for about 20% of the time and use the other 80% for explaining your actual design decisions. Bringing a few printed copies along with the digital copy will set you up for success and do not forget to try the digital copy on different interfaces. But remember in the end, your goal is to WOW them (Win them Over with your Work) and do not be afraid to show your passion!
