The trail is narrow and winding, but Noah steers the Jeep onward without difficulty. There’s only one path, so Lydia sets the maps aside and sits back in her seat.
So far, the Western Wilderness is not what she expected.
Back on the yellow brick road, it was summer. Dry heat, scorched earth, and unrelenting sun.
A single turn later, they’ve stumbled into autumn. The trees are mature and adorned with jewel-toned leaves – rich reds, vibrant oranges, and golden yellows, even hints of royal blue and violet. Every so often, they fall, swirling through the air, their scattered pieces carpeting the forest floor.
Minutes into the shade, the temperature drops, and the air thickens with moisture. So much so that the windows fog, and Noah has to put on the defroster. Still, there’s a surprising amount of light. It spills through the intricate network of boughs and branches, giving everything an incandescent glow.
It’s beautiful, but Lydia doesn’t let that fool her. She suspects the beauty of this place is the very thing that lures people in. She and her friends may be aware of the dangers ahead, but she wonders how many unsuspecting travelers never made it out.
