Marika Hackman Interview
I interviewed Marika Hackman ahead of her gig at the Portland Arms last Wednesday and played the interview on The Saturday Music Show on 22nd November.
As we've had lots of new members at the station this autumn, I've been organising lots of workshops for them on things like how to interview artists and production skills. Even though they were run by people I've made and done radio with since I started, I've learnt something new in each talk and tried to applying some different approaches to this interview.
Firstly, I did the interview in the front bar of The Portland Arms (love that place), so there was loads of background noise. I've learnt from past experience (see ArcSoc Caberet Review) that if you cut up and edit interviews with background noise it sounds terrible. Tim Davies suggested to me ages ago that I can avoid this by sticking another layer of similar background noise underneath the edited interview. And, you know, I think it worked! I did have to spend an awkward ten minutes sitting in the pub by myself with the recorder sitting on the table in front of me.
Secondly, Emma Snook gave a talk on how to conduct interviews and one of her pieces of advice was to "be brutal" in cutting down the content of the interview. I've noticed that no matter how conciensious I am about it, or how hard I try to stop doing it, I'll still nod along and say "yeah" periodically when someone is answering a question from me.
It's annoying and it makes the interviews sound terrible but this time I tried to use them as an editting indicator. My thinking was that by the time my concentration's slipped enough that I'm letting out a "yeah" without noticing, the listener's concentration is probably long gone. So, I tried to cut answers down around that time.
It was difficult and I'm not sure how much it effected the flow of the interview (it's so hard to judge a conversation you've heard at least 5 times), but it did make the late-night editing a bit more efficient.
Anyway - enjoy the interview and my mad editing skillz.
