This took a lot more effort than I'd like to admit... But anything for them, honestly.

On Alt Pairings, Inuyasha
I'm sure that some of you know me from over on Reddit, so it should come as no surprise that I get caught up in fan fiction related discussions over there from time to time.
This week, there was a thread posted about alternate pairings in fandoms. Personally, I tend to be a stickler for canon. Generally speaking, I believe that canonical pairings are canonical for a reason.
But there's one fandom where I have to admit that the canon pairings make very little sense to me. Have I still written them? Yes. Do I think the characters could do better? Also yes.
That fandom is Inuyasha. It's been ages since I've actually turned out something for the series, but there's a chance out there someone has read some of my more popular titles, such as False Truths, Time and Again, or Substance.
With Inuyasha, the main canonical pairings don't make sense for a lot of reasons, but they're pretty easy to boil down:
Inuyasha/Kagome - Kagome is abusive and insists that Inuyasha change himself for her, and that's something that stays fairly constant throughout the series. And let's not talk about her use of "Osuwari!".
Miroku/Sango - There's really nothing else to say other than apparently if you sexually harass someone long enough, they'll fall for you.
So yes, not great, even if I do enjoy them in the series greatly. But there's an alt pair that makes a lot more sense: Inuyasha/Sango.
They have similar backgrounds and purposes. They inherently trust one another. Neither is abusive to the other. And perhaps most importantly: they accept each other as they are.
As a writer, and someone who also likes writing violent stories with angsty romance, that dynamic is one that can be incredibly fulfilling.
What comes as a surprise for me is that I never really thought about it until I read a piece of fan fiction many, many years ago that beautifully illustrated why this works as almost an emotional refuge for the readers. That is magic, as only fan fiction can manage.
Sadly, the story I read many years ago is long gone (or at least, I can't find it), but I am playing with the idea of writing a short chapter story to get back to that feeling. What do you like about Inu/San?

Some bonds are made of steel, even as they're changed and weathered by the years...
