Chapter 8 Time doesn’t heal all wounds
Inuaysha knew he was pacing, his jacket tossed to the side, as he clenched his fists. He was trying to control his demon from lashing out at that bitch for hurting Kagome. When he finally realize Kagome had taken off, her enticing scent filled with the salt of her tears, he tried calling out for her, but she disappeared. He had caught a glimpse of Naraku leaving with Kikyo when his father dismissed the ball, but more than anything he wanted to go after Kagome and comfort her. Providing for her, caring for her, loving her was more important that beheading some Lord and his daughter. Despite rationalizing, he growled once more, a picture of Naraku’s headless body pleasing to his demon.
“Inuyasha, please rein it in some. I understand that you want to go off and kill them, but not until we have further proof.” Toga assured from his seat behind the desk, Izayoi standing behind him, her hand tight on his shoulder. Inuyasha sighed, his anger deflating a bit, knowing his father’s words were correct. As future King, he couldn’t just go around killing people, there had to be evidence to back it up.
“Father,” Inuaysha began, looking towards his parents. “Mother, I want to marry Kagome. Not because of her situation regarding Naraku, but because I love her.”
“Anyone with eyes could tell that you two love each other after tonight, but first we must do this the right way. After we deal with Naraku and Kikyo, you are free to marry her.” Toga reassured him once again.
“You truly love her, don’t you?” Sango asked, her voice coming from behind him, her hands folded out in front of her. When she looked up at him, he simply nodded. “She loves you too. We talked a bit before the ball about you and I can tell she wants to marry you as well. After everything she’s been through in her life, she deserves someone who loves her back, whose going to treat her well.”
“Sango, my dear, what do you mean about her life?” Miroku asked quietly, everyone focusing in on the woman’s words.
“Her parents died at a young age, she was in the accident as well, but managed to escape before the carriage fell over the cliff. It was storming hard that night and the only thing she remembers was a cloaked man on a steed nearby who simply watched the whole thing. After that, she woke up in her home with Kikyo and Naraku there. Since then, they’ve treated her like a slave, denying her the most basic needs. I’ve seen her many a times with bruises covering her body, cuts so deep that take forever to heal. Every time she stops by the shop in town, she looks like she hasn’t eaten in three days.” Sango’s chin quivered, her voice growing quiet, “I always feed her, try to convince her to take some back home with her and hide it, but she always says no and that he always figures it out. I worry about what kind of punishment he has for her tonight.”
“Is there anything we can do to stop this? Can we get her out of there?” Kagura asked, holding a sleeping Rin in her arms tightly.
“Like I’ve said before, until she comes to us for help, I cannot intervene. However, once Sesshomaru returns, I have a feeling we can push forward with court.” Toga shook his head squeezing his wife’s hand. It was if he said the magic words and Sesshomaru came walking through the office door with two severed demon heads and a knife. He nodded to the guard, who promptly stood right outside the door as he shut it, and the entire room stared in horror.
“Father, I have proof of Naraku’s plan for treason. Send word to the courts, we have a hearing to attend to.” Inuyasha shuddered at his brother’s smile, but thankful all the same. Kagome, hang on a bit longer.
Kagome heard the door slam hard as she rushed to safely put away her mother’s gown, tucking it under a wool blanket in a wooden box. Preparing herself mentally for the punishment she was about to receive, she closed her eyes and took deep breaths. Her fate was sealed, she knew she would probably never see Inuyasha again, especially after everything that happened this evening. She doubted he would ever want to see her again, but prayed to the kami all the same. Sucking on her bottom lip, she winced a bit as the small wound reopened, her tongue running over it. She heard footsteps fast approaching and stood, her head down as Naraku and Kikyo slammed open the door, staring at her from the doorway.
“Follow me.” He commanded and she didn’t dare to look up. Nodding, she quietly stepped along, while Kikyo trailed along behind, her heels clacking against the floor. She noticed he was taking her down below, to the cellar. Why there? The only other thing down here was the small room where they kept dry goods stored for the winter. She heard the soft jingling of keys and glanced over to see Naraku unlocking the storage room door. Swallowing quickly, she pushed down her fear and walked past him into the small room.
The small window in the corner, now barred to prevent an escape, let in a bit of moon light and she was able to see that he had cleared the room out. Naraku set down a lantern and handed Kikyo something long and thin, rolled up, like rope.
“Move to the wall.” She did as she was told, facing him, her back against the wall. She noticed two chain hanging from the ceiling above her and wondered when those had been installed. She had a bad feeling about this. “Face the wall, arms up.” He continued to demand, his voice firm, the barest hint of anger showing.
Slowly turning around, she once more did what she was told and felt his large hands grip her wrists tightly. Wincing at the pain, she felt metal encase her wrists, metal clinking together. Pulling a bit, she realizing he chained her to the wall, and with wide eyes she attempted to turn and look at him, but failed.
“Naraku, I’m-“ she began, hoping to apologize and lessen the blow.
“Do not speak. Apparently when you do, you cause the family embarrassment. I will give you ten lashes for your actions tonight. If you make a sound, I’m adding another to the count.” He ordered, his voice echoing off the stone walls. She heard Kikyo faintly snicker and her stomach sank. She listened closely as Naraku’s heavy footsteps retreated, then moved closer again. There wasn’t any warning, any time to prepare herself for the first one and when searing pain whipped across her back, she cried out.
“What did I say slave? For every sound you make, I will add one more.” He spat. She bit her lip, tasting fresh blood as another wave of pain filled her senses. “Good girl.”
She thought she was going to hurl with how much pain she was in. He was ruthless in his swing, the end of the whip catching her arms. She could feel her tattered dressed weighing down as blood soaked through. Her legs began to tremble after the second lash and she closed her eyes, desperate to keep quiet. Inuyasha, I’m so sorry. Tears were falling down her cheeks, drenching her cheeks and she looked out towards the moon, desperate for an escape. Focusing on the glowing light, she pushed through the pain, her body slowly going numb after the fourth lash.
She wasn’t sure when he finished, only that she hung there, her body suspended in the air, when he finally unlocked her wrists. She fell to the ground, her face landing in what she assumed was a puddle of her own blood. Still conscious, she didn’t move, didn’t speak, only laid there silently, barely registering faint footsteps as they came closer. Looking up, the last thing she saw was Kikyo’s heel coming down on her head.
Chapter 9 The King’s Request
She didn’t remember moving herself on to her stomach, the stone ground cool against her cheek, or putting herbs on her back, but she was grateful for her thinking. It wasn’t until she heard the soft padding of feet that she opened her eyes slowly to see a pair of fox feet near her head. Frowning a bit, she was confused.
“Kagome?” The voice whispered softly and she blinked, trying to form some kind of coherent thought, but when she tried her head pounded. Groaning a bit, she heard the voice hush her, a soothing balm applied to her back and she sank back into a deep sleep.
Her body was feeling much better and she yawned, her back twinging a bit as she stretched her arms overhead. Opening her eyes, she blinked away the sleepiness and sat up gently. Wincing a bit as her back stretched, she looked around, the early dawn light coming in through the window and was surprised at what she saw. Shippo lay beside her, sleeping soundly, his small snores the only thing she could hear. There were a few bottles of what looked like healing balm, tucked inside a small woven basket to her right. Reaching carefully, so she didn’t wake Shippo, she pulled the it closer, taking notice of the bandages covering her body in various places. Flipping over the green cloth that laid over the handle, she smiled at the small baked goods she assumed was from Kaede, a small note peeking out from in between two muffins. Frowning a bit, she unfolded the parchment, reading each word carefully.
Child, these herbs are to help you heal. Get some rest and I will send more sweets and healing ointments with Shippo next visit. Be safe my child.
Smiling at Kaede’s kindness, she folded the parchment back up, sliding it into her skirt pocket. Looking over all the delicious treats, she decided a small piece of sweet bread would be perfect for her empty stomach. Moaning at it’s deliciousness, she looked down to see Shippo snickering at her. Raising her eyebrow, asking silently him what was so funny, she laughed along too when he only giggled louder.
“You gonna be okay ‘Gome?” He asked after their laughter died down, his green eyes filled with worry.
“I think so. How did you find me?” She sighed, asking softly, struggling to remembering the last few days.
“I was going into town when I heard this man, Naraku bragging to a man with a long braid about having you chained up here. I came to check it out and when I saw your wounds, I ran back to Kaede to get help. You’ve been asleep for a long time though.”
“Shippo, thank you.” She smiled softly for the kit, before frowning. “You have to leave though. If Naraku finds out you were here, he could hurt you.
“I know, I understand.” He stood, brushing off some dirt from his legs. “Apply the balm as needed, it helps with the fever. ‘Gome, I’ll be back around sundown with more food and medicine.” As he finished his last instructions, Kagome heard a door slam and her eyes widened. Shippo placed a small leaf over his head and disappeared completely. Looking around, she heard his giggle, and smiled softly.
“Be safe Shippo.” She whispered. When she knew he was gone, she struggled getting to her feet, setting the basket of goods behind a broken crate, hoping whoever was coming wouldn’t see it. Sitting back down on the floor, she slowly leaned against the wall as the door swung wide open and Kikyo walked in. Schooling her features, she waited to hear what her cousin had to say. After a few moments of silence, Kikyo continuing to stare at her, she shifted uncomfortably, her back twinging in pain.
“It seems he didn’t give you enough lashes if you’re already sitting up.” She sneered and Kagome didn’t respond. “The King is angry at our family, because of you. He’s called for all of us to appear before him in court tomorrow after lunch time. Father is rightfully angry at you as well.”
Kagome watched as Kikyo began to slowly walk around the room, keeping her brown eyes on Kagome. Swallowing, she was grateful when Kikyo passed the hidden basket.
“Oh, quit being high and mighty, it was your fault we ended up in this predicament. You should’ve just died along with your parents.” She smiled smugly. “Oops.”
Kagome squeezed her fists tightly, ignoring her back pain, and wanted to strangle her cousin. She does not deserve your anger. She just needs a little kindness shown to her. Breaking deeply, she relaxed her hands, continuing to stay silent, her anger building inside of her.
“However, you seem to be a little dense, considering their accident wasn’t an accident at all.” What?
“What did you say?” Kagome whispered, eyes growing wide.
“You haven’t figured it out by now? Your parents deaths was no accident.” Kikyo began her tale, walking around, clasping her hands behind her back. “You see, my father has been after your family’s fortune for a long time and when you were born, he about gave up all hope on getting it. He planned for your parents to take you to a distant relatives wedding.”
As she continued to explain, Kagome’s memories flashed before her eyes. She remembered her mother’s laughter as Kagome hung out the window, squealing at seeing the ocean for the first time. She could picture the rain fall, coating the roads in a slick layer of mud whenever she peeked out from behind the curtain. She heard her father’s yell as the horses had begun to run off the path and her own scream when she was thrown from the carriage as it went over the cliff. Closing her eyes, she took deep breaths as tears rolled down her cheeks. It can’t be true. It was an accident, not being murdered by own family.
“You lie.”
“It’s such a shame you don’t believe me. Oh well. After tomorrow, Father will get rid of you for good and become the official Lord of the Manor. I must go now, I need to scrub my hair today, so I look my best for our dear Prince tomorrow. Sleep well Kagome.” Kikyo called as she slammed the door once more, leaving her in the silent prison, her heart shattering once more.
The sun began to set and Kagome glanced out the barred window once more, wishing for Shippo to hurry. Her stomach growled again and she tightened her arms around herself, leaning her head on her forearms. I wish this would all end soon. I knew Inuyasha will never want to be with me and after tomorrow, I will be no longer part of this family either. Mother, Father, how can I continue to believe in the good? How can I be kind and have courage when I just end up here? My heart can’t take much more.
Quick, soft footsteps could be heard from outside and when Kagome looked up, Shippo appeared out thin air, holding a large bundle on his back. Crying happily, she launched herself, bringing him in her arms, hugging him tightly.
“I can’t breath ‘Gome.” She heard from under her chin and laughed, letting him go, wiping the tears from her cheeks. Goodness, will I ever go a day where I don’t cry? “Are you feeling better?”
“Much better, thanks to you!” She smiled, grateful for her tiny friend.
“Here’s more herbs and some delicious pastries Granny Kaede just made this morning, but ‘Gome, I gotta tell you something.” He lowered his voice, glancing around the small room.
“Hey, nothing is going to happen to you, tell me, what’s wrong?” She frowned, bringing him into her lap, brushing his unruly hair from his eyes.
“When I was, uh, headed here, I passed by your Uncle and the weird man with the braid again. They didn’t see me, but they were talking. Naraku had this tiny vile, it looks like a perfume bottle, and handed it to the other man. I think it had something bad in it, but I couldn’t smell it from where I was. He was talking about how he is supposed to present himself to the court tomorrow, for your punishment and that the braided hair man had the perfect opportunity before to slip that in their food and drink.”
“Naraku is going to poison the royal family?!” She asked, eyes blowing wide. Inuyasha!
“Yeah, and the man with the braid also has this large sword that he is gonna use as backup he said. I don’t want to know what that means.”
“Did they say anything about what’s in it for the other man?”
“No, just shook hands and I dashed off to see you. Kagome, what’s going to happen if they kill the royal family?”
“I don’t know, but I don’t want to find out either.” Her voice trailing off. Suddenly, as if a light blue went off, she straightened her back, ignoring the pain and looked down at him, “Shippo, I need your help.”
His eyes glittered, determination on his face and he squared his shoulders, ready for whatever she had planned. She told him all about what Kikyo told her earlier, than Naraku killed her family, plans to take care of her as well. She instructed him to go back to Kaede, tell her everything he knew from their conversation, plus what he saw with Naraku and together, he and Kaede will go to the King tomorrow early morning before court. She was supposed to appear in court for her punishment after lunch and if Kaede and him are in the throne room when she arrives, she will know that the King and Queen know. To make them believe, tell them I sent you, along with this. She handed his a small handkerchief, tucking it into his bundle wrapped across his back. Inuaysha has to believe me.
As the sun dipped behind the horizon once more, Kagome wondered if this would be the last time she laid down to sleep, no matter how restless it would be. She prayed to the Kami that they would save Inuyasha and his family, that she would accept whatever punishment they thought fit for pretending to be anything more than a servant girl and that Inuyasha will find true love and be happy. Closing her eyes, the cool balm soothing her muscles, she fell into a fitful sleep, dreaming of golden eyes and bloodshed.
