Ep. 2 - Seekers of the Sacred Jewel

So! Still doing my side-by-side read/watch of Inuyasha from start to finish, and I’m finding it really interesting.

What I noticed the most about this episode was just how much more visceral and vicious the manga is vs the anime.

What do I mean by that? Let’s take a look shall we?

When Inuyasha Attacks Kagome - Anime

“I hate having to wait. And I hate the smell of you.”

Vs. Manga

When Kagome Offers To Share with Inuyasha - Anime

“It’s fair to say you don’t like me, right?”

“WAY more than fair.”

Vs. Manga

The Violence of the Crow Demon Against The Bandits - Anime

You can barely tell what’s happened.

Decapitates a statue.

Vs. Manga

You can totally tell what’s happened

Decapitates a dude.

When Inuyasha plans to “kill” Kagome - Anime

“And after she takes out the crow, it’s her turn.”

Vs. Manga

Also, in general, the way things played out is different: Kagome’s interactions with the bandits, when and how Inuyasha arrives, how the crow gets the jewel, how Kagome saves the child... all completely different.

There seems to be something a bit more mature in the experience of this episode’s story in the manga vs. the anime. In fact, it gave me the impression that too much time was spent trying to “prove” Kagome to the viewer in the anime, and it surprised me that I liked the manga version of it better. (Because the anime will always be my first love.)

So yeah, onto the Yura of the Hair storyline! I can’t wait to see how these next two episodes compare.

Ep. 3 - Down the Rabbit Hole and Back Again

Hey everyone back again with the next installment of my side-by-side read/watch of Inuyasha, the manga vs. the anime.

And I’d like to call this post...

4 Times Inuyasha Acted Like a Dog... and Other Key Moments at the Beginning of our Story.

Let’s start off with answering that eternal question: Was Inuyasha trying to spy on Kagome naked or was he just being sneaky and trying to get the shard?

Answer: I think the Manga actually does a pretty blunt job of proving that YES Inu was fully trying to get an eyeful of our lovely Kags.

EEEEEEKKK! SIT BOY!!

And then... Kaede’s line!! I’m dead.

Which brings us to Time #1 that Inu acts like a dog in this episode...  Growling at Kagome...

Why is he growling at Kagome you may ask? 

Because, OH YEAH, this is the moment we realize that DAMN for Inuyasha it’s only been three days since the love of his life betrayed him and basically murdered him, pinning him to a tree. THREE DAYS!

So I mean really? Can you blame him?

Continuing on with our countdown of times in this episode Inuyasha acts like a dog...

#2 - Sitting on his haunches

#3 - Wiggling his ears, listening to Kagome’s movements even when he’s pretending to ignore her.

#4 - And of. course, we can’t forget the hilarious moment when Inuyasha digs a hole to put Kaede in. I love the way the manga shows this. I mean, damn! He really puts his back into it!

But Inuyasha isn’t all softie. He’s also a goddamn badass. I mean, geez! Yura’s hair is sharp enough t slice a tree in half and not only is his skin tough enough to withstand it, but he’s strong enough to pull against it and win!

Also, notice Yura’s line there? “The Flesh has not been severed...?” Know what the equivalent line is in the anime? “The cut was not clean.”

Which highlights, again, the way the anime tones down the violence of the original manga.

I mean, look at this even... In the anime, it’s a leaf that Kagome notices get split by Yura’s hair.

Want to know what gets split in the manga? A FRICKIN’ BIRD.

Whoa.

Now, there’s only one last thing I want to bring your attention to in this episode... and that is some DEEP FORESHADOWING going on here at the end.

Kagome, standing in priestess clothes, realizing that she’d been gone from her world for three days and how scared she was that she wouldn’t be able to make it home and how happy she is to be back... stands in stark contrast to Kagome in modern clothes, standing at the edge of the Bone-Eater’s Well after three years of being separated from Inuyasha, crying for the 100% exact opposite reason.

So yeah! All the feels! All the shipper-goggles! And onward to the next episode!

Okay remember a few weeks ago, in this post, when I mentioned I was going to be doing a side-by-side read/watch of Inuyasha in its entirety? 

Well... IT’S BEGUN. And You Guys....!!! 

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT ACTUALLY WAS THAT WOKE INUYASHA UP?

KAGOME SCREAMED FOR HELP! 

Like Inuyasha’s soul understood that he needed to protect Kagome before he’d ever even laid eyes on her!

Like their connection was so powerful that without the arrow even needing to be removed it was enough to break the seal and wake him up.

If that’s not some soulmate shit right there, I don’t know what is. 

AND GET THIS: NEITHER OF THEM EVEN KNOWS IT...because how could they?!

Sidenote: Honourable mention for “funniest moment” in the first episode goes to Gramps gifting Kagome a Kappa’s hand. All I could think was IS THAT JAKEN’S HAND? LOLOL!
