There's a puff of blue smoke in the middle of the living room, and suddenly, Yvonne is there. She looks around, mildly surprised, and then turns to where Alt, Jackie, and Frederick are sitting. Frederick looks exhausted, leaning his head against Jackie's shoulder.
"Are you all okay?" Yvonne asks. "Fengge? Jackie? Alt?"
Frederick chuckles a bit. "Fengge? You must be really worried. I'm fine.”
“We're okay," Jackie agrees.
Alt startles a bit at the puff of smoke but then smiles tiredly at Yvonne. “A bit tired but…I think we’re doing better now that we’ve had some change to rest and recharge.”
"Okay, good." Yvonne nods. She reaches into her pockets and pulls something out. "I have some fruit leather if you guys want any."
Jackie laughs a little. "Fruit what?”
“They're like jerky if it was made of fruit." Yvonne waves the wrapped treats around, demonstrating that they're not stiff like a protein bar but instead flexible.
Alt’s eyes light up, “Ohhh fuck yeah I’ll have some of that!” Yvonne passes one of the fruit leathers over to Alt
"And you just had that in your nice suit pocket?” Jackie laughs.
“These ABIM suits don't stay nice while fighting, don't worry, they self-repair.”
“What?!" Jackie sounds excited, but then he shakes his head."A-anyway. Have you heard anything from Anti or Bro?"
Yvonne shakes her head. "No, I haven't."
Alt deflates, unwrapping the fruit leather and chews it thoughtfully for a second, trying to think. “…s-something must be wrong… I dunno how long we were knocked out but…? Surely Anti and Chase would have gotten … farther I guess? Far enough to at least be able to message us!”
"You're right. From what Anti said, the cabin where they're keeping Jack isn't that big. Even if it has magical defenses, they should've gotten in and out by now. Oh, you guys have been away for about two hours, by the way." Yvonne says.
Jackie frowns. "Should we head there?”
“No, we can track them, can't we?" Frederick says.
Alt perks up. "Oh! M-Maybe I can try to see where they are! I've been working on my seering! I just... need a mirror or something reflective..!"
"Right, you said something about that, didn't you?" Jackie says. "Did you... did you see Foxglove in a vision? You said something about him being shorter than expected--which, yeah, fair, I think I'm taller than that guy.”
Alt laughs, "Yeah I did see him- and Mae too... I didn't realize who they were until I met them though.”
“Could you use the surface of our phones?" Frederick holds his up. "Or are they too dark?" “...oh my god i never thought about using a phone! That's brilliant!" Alt grins. "A black mirror is usually what's traditional or a black crystal ball... but people have been doing it with like mirrors and bowls of water for centuries."
Yvonne grins. "Don't worry about it, boys." Again, she reaches into her pocket, instead pulling out a small circular gold object--a compact.
Jackie blinks. "How big are your pockets?”
“Much bigger than most pockets I usually deal with. Why do you think I wear my work jacket so often?" Yvonne hands it over to Alt. "Is this big enough?"
Alt looks at Yvonne and then takes the compact, looking it over. "I... I think I can use this or one of our phones as long as we keep it off... since I'm not using the crystal I have attuned to my magic I... I need to be in a dark room and have some... candles- but I can just make some lights too..." He mumbles to himself, going over his checklist.
Jackie gets up and goes over to the window, pulling the blinds closed. "I think they cut off the electricity so no problem with the light," he says, continuing into the dining room to close the blinds in there as well.
"I'll make the lights," Yvonne offers. "You keep your energy for the spell.”
“C'mon, Eve, a scrying spell doesn't take that much power," Frederick says. "You save your energy, too."
Alt laughs and nods, "Okay, guess I can't argue with that. If you can make the lights flicker like candlelight that'll help a lot." Yvonne nods. She whispers something under her breath and a handful of blue lights form around them, floating in a circle in midair. They do, indeed, flicker like candlelight.
Alt glitches down to sit in front of the coffee table and pulls out his phone and shuts it off. He tries to see if he can get the compact to lay flat then frowns. He tries to hold it up enough so he can at least see into it, placing it behind his phone. "There... now I can look at both... maybe that'll increase the chances of me seeing something."
Jackie sits down next to Alt. "Anything we can do to help?"
“Just… try to keep quiet, I guess.” Alt says, “I need to go somewhat into a trance to try to spark something.” He reaches out to put his hand on his phone, pouring some magic over the surface of it and the mirror. He breathes slowly, halfway opening up his eyes to try to study the shapes forming from the light shifting around them. He tries to focus on Chase… he needs to find out where he is…!
After a minute, shapes begin to form in Alt's vision. They're vague, at first. Strange movements... There's some sort of circular object, but that fades away as he focuses. It looks like... there are people moving around? They're helping someone onto a flat surface, lying them down. The silhouette of a woman in a long coat waits at the edge of this scene.
Alt mumbles as he registers things, magic starting to glow in his eyes brighter. “There’s… people moving- a woman with a long coat…” He tries to concentrate harder, he needs to see where Bro is!
It's difficult, but slowly, the silhouettes clear up. Bro is lying on some sort of table, surrounded by people in black uniforms and others in blue coats. The woman to the side has short red hair and is wearing a long white coat with a strange eye-like logo on the sleeve. An eye with three circles for irises.
"What's happening?" Jackie leans closer, but can only see vague shapes in the reflections.
Alt stiffens and straightens up in a quick snap as the vision gets clearer. His eyes fill completely with magic, a somewhat monotone voice slipping quietly from his lips. “Bro Fantastic is laying on a table… surrounded by masked people in black uniforms and others with blue coats. A red haired woman is standing to the side in a long white coat… there’s a symbol on her sleeve. It’s a 3 irised eye.” Alt then gasps as the magic snaps out of his eyes and he braces himself on the table. He pants as dread fills his stomach. “H-He’s been captured by IRIS!”
"IRIS?" Jackie repeats, sitting up straight. "That's the place--Anti hacked that place for knowledge about the multiverse. He says they're bad news."
Yvonne frowns. "IRIS... I've heard that name around. They make technology, but I think the higher-ups at ABIM are worried they're doing more.”
Alt looks up at Jackie with wide eyes, “I-IRIS is just like SCLERA…! Except not as magical… but still very bad news! When I went to go see the Schneep that was with us during our last adventure- IRIS managed to capture him too! They probably captured Chase because of his powers!”
"Shit, right!" Jackie's eyes widen. "And JJ said he and his friends were captured by them in his world, too!”
“Either way, it sounds like he got kidnapped, so they're very bad news." Frederick stands up. "Can we track down Bro? Is Anti still with him?”
“I can't imagine anyone being able to capture Anti," Jackie says, but he still sounds worried.
Alt tries to hold back his panic but he’s shaking. “I-I didn’t see Anti… m-maybe he’s hiding- he might be okay…? But I-if IRIS can take down Chase then… I-I… I don’t know…!”
“I think we have to go after Bro now," Jackie says, standing up. "Yvonne, you're really good at tracking spells right? Can you find him?”
“I can try." Yvonne rubs her hands together. "Alt, do you have something of Bro's? Or something that he touched recently? I can track him without it, but those spells tend to be more powerful."
Alt pockets his phone and then struggles to think. “Something of Bro’s… uh…” He tries looking around in his backpack. “The only thing I think of that he touched recently was- maybe my jacket or Jackie’s shirt? But that was hours ago… uh- oh!” Alt pulls out a pink mask from his bag and holds it out. “Chase left one of his spare masks in my bag!”
"That'll work!" Yvonne takes the mask. She closes her eyes and holds it closer. "Vrite ai’ftó pa gráf tikye edu," she mutters, and her eyes start to glow blue. She looks around.
"Did it, uh, work?" Jackie asks.
"Yes, I can see the trail now," Yvonne says. "He's to the north. Pretty far to the north. I doubt he's in Mirygale right now.”
“That would make sense, he and Anti had to leave the city to go to the cabin," Jackie says.
"But in the opposite direction--the Scanruil Forest is to the south," Frederick points out.
Alt’s eyes flare in determination. “If any of you have been somewhere north- I can try to see if I can glitch us closer.”
"Frederick, didn't you go north to Daindover one time?" Jackie says.
Frederick starts. "Yeah. Me and Yvonne went there one time to deal with this black magic diviner.”
“Oh yeah, Aoife Kelley, I remember her," Yvonne says.
"You remember me telling you that story, Jackie?" Frederick says.
"Course I do." Jackie grins. "I love hearing about your magic detective stuff. And I just... like hearing you talk in general.”
“Aww." Frederick leans over and gives him a peck on the cheek.
"Very cute, you two," Yvonne says. "I don't think they're that far north, though."
“Huh… a lot of those names sound familiar… I think I know some other universe guys that live in Daindover-“ Alt says. Then he smiles at the two of them before he frowns back in thought. “Hmm yeah if it's more than like… an hour away- I could seriously drain my magic trying to get over there.” He anxiously taps his foot on the ground. “So… should we… drive?” He winces at this suggestion.
Frederick blinks. "Well... we didn't exactly bring any cars. Do you want to teleport back to my house so we can pick one up? Or maybe waste time finding a car rental?”
“I could just teleport us halfway down the motorway to Daindover," Yvonne suggests.
"You've been teleporting around all the time, doesn't that take a lot of energy?" Jackie points out.
Yvonne frowns. "Good point."
“Oh man right… your guys’ house is so far away though…” Alt mumbles. “I’d need to spend the rest of the time back to try to regain my energy… I guess that’s not … horrible though.” He frowns.
"An hour-plus drive sounds like a good amount of time to recharge," Frederick says. "You need food to regain your energy as well right? We can pick something up from home.”
“We can even let Chase and Heather know that we're coming," Jackie says.
"Great idea." Frederick picks up his phone and sends a quick text.
Alt nods, though he looks uneasy. “I wish there was a faster way but… I… I can’t drain myself trying to look for Chase… he’s gonna need all of us ready to go.” He nervously reaches to fidget with his necklace- then realizes he forgot to get it back from Jackie. “Oh uh- unrelated but Jackie you have my necklace right? Oliver will kill me if I lose that-“
"Right! Yeah yeah." Jackie takes the necklace out of his pocket. "Sorry, I meant to give it back earlier, but I guess I forgot." He hands it over.
Alt chuckles and shakes his head, “It's okay- I was kinda delirious anyways.” He slips it back on.
"Alright, everyone, gather up," Frederick says. "Let's head on back. The sooner we leave, the sooner we get there."
Alt nods. “Right-“ He grabs the others and then glitches them all back to Fredrick’s house.
They appear in the living room again. Chase is still in the beanbag, with a TV show playing on the TV. Heather is in the kitchen area, doing a little dance by the microwave.
Jackie looks at the TV and frowns. "Bruh.”
“Holy--!" Chase jumps, twisting around to look at them. He sighs. "God, man. You can't scare me like that." He rubs his eyes with one hand, closing the lid of his water bottle with the other. "You know what happens if this spills out in the middle of your magic boyfriend's house." He waves the bottle.
"Yeah... Sorry, Chase. But I thought we agreed we'd watch the Flash together, man." Jackie folds his arms.
Frederick immediately lets go and rushes for the front door.
Heather turns back to watch him go. "Uh... everything going okay?" she asks.
Alt laughs a bit at Chase and Jackie then looks over to Heather, his smile fading. “Uh… n-not really… uh… My brother is in trouble. I-IRIS captured him… and probably Anti too.”
Chase inhales sharply. "Oh... shit. Why are you back here then?”
“We're getting Frederick's car so we can go after him without using too much magic," Yvonne says. Her irises are still glowing blue.
"Well go, then!" Chase gestures at them to leave.
"We are!" Jackie heads for the front door. "Stop watching that!”
“I will!”
“How is it?”
“Terrible.”
“Perfect, I'm excited." Jackie quickly leaves, following Frederick.
"Don't worry, everything will get back on track soon," Yvonne says, following him in turn.
"Be careful, Eve!" Heather calls after her.
"I will be!"
Alt nods quickly and glitches after the others- but oh yeah big jump… that makes him dizzy. But he shakes it off and hurries after them.
Jackie runs back into the house briefly to grab a bag of pretzels and some soda bottles, then returns to the car, getting into the passenger seat. "Here." He passes them back to Alt and Yvonne in the backseat.
Frederick starts the car. "Alright. Let's go."
Alt smiles and nods, “Thanks.” He settles in, holding his backpack in his arms as he looks out the window. “Hold on Chase…” He whispers.
◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈
Bro wakes up slowly again, his head still foggy and muscles still weak. He blearily opens his eyes and groans quietly. Where… is he now…? Based on all the white- another fucking lab. Why are all scientists so boring with their interior design choices?
He's lying on a flat surface--a table? Or is it a gurney? It's hard to tell. Leather straps hold him down, going over his chest, legs, and wrists. He's in an octagonal room, its walls lined with metal tables and cabinets. There's a second table with straps in the room as well. The room is filled with people, some being guards in black uniforms, some being doctors in blue coats, and of course, Dr. Prosopsi is there, too.
He tries to move but finds out he’s strapped down and he gasps, trying to pull himself free. But- he feels so weak! And everytime he tries to move his leg it feels fucking awful. He moves his head to look around and narrows his eyes at all the people mingling around. What the fuck were they doing…?
"Ah, good morning, Mr. Brody," Dr. Prosopsi says, smiling. "Don't worry, we're just doing some scans. Try not to move your leg too much." Looks like his injured leg is already in a cast, with his pants leg rolled up. Two of the doctors in blue start wheeling over a L-shaped instrument. They position it so that the shorter part of the L is above the table, and one of them starts typing on a control panel attached to it.
Bro blinks as he realizes his leg has been casted. …that was nice of them. Honestly he thought he’d just have to tough it out till he got to an actual doctor. Must be some ulterior motive here… guess having a lab rat that can’t run is inconvenient. Still he glares at Prosopsi and bares his teeth, gripping his hands into fists. “Scanning what exactly?” He growls.
"Several things. Your anatomy, your energy signature, stuff like that." Prosopsi chuckles. "Don't worry, it won't hurt." The top part of the scanner lights up, sending a wave of blue light downwards. One of the doctors starts to move it, scanning Bro.
Bro grunts, anger flaring in his eyes as he tries to pull against his restraints again. Don’t want him to move huh? Maybe he’ll just fuck up their precious scan!
The scan completes, and a monitor on one of the tables lights up. Prosopsi and one of the other doctors gather around it. She frowns. “Run it again,” she says, gesturing at the others. They nod, and start a second scan. “Do you see this?” Prosopsi mutters to the other doctor, gesturing at the screen.
Bro bares his teeth more and tries to pull and shake even more- even if it hurts, even if he knows he can’t break out. He’s earned the right to be a dick here.
A headache spikes in his brain. Anti is still there, and apparently not happy with him wiggling around and hurting himself. Bro pouts and looks up like he can give Anti a look. At least he’s still there though… he’s wondered why he’s been so quiet.
"Mr. Brody, please," Prosopsi says. "You're just damaging your own body. Run it again." The two doctors sigh and run the scan again. Bro does stay still this time even if he glares at the doctors the whole time.
"Yes, that, do you see that?" She points at the screen once more.
"Yes I do," the other doctor says. "There are several points of interest, but that is worrying." He points somewhere else. "And that is fascinating."
Bro bares his teeth and snaps at the doctors. “Stop talking about me like I’m your fucked up science experiment!”
"Apologies, Mr. Brody," Prosopsi says dismissively. "Mr. Brody, are you aware that your broken tibia is healing unusually fast?"
“Yeah, I know shit about my own body. Spooky, isn’t it?” Bro says with a deadpan voice.
"Then are you aware of the strange bit of energy in your brain?" Prosopsi continues. "It matches the energy signature of ALTR 114209."
The pressure in Bro's head shifts forward slightly. Bro tries to keep his expression neutral. “Uh- I have a headache. But I thought that was from you all sedating me and making me fall in the elevator shaft.”
"I did tell you not to leave, Mr. Brody," Prosopsi repeats.
"This is not a normal headache," the other doctor mutters.
"Oh, of course not." Prosopsi turns back to Bro. "Mr. Brody, I did tell you that there might be some anomalous manipulation going on. This is a physical sign of that, the fact that there is an energy signature coming from your brain."
“Well I think you’re spewing a load of horse shit- cuz I don’t feel anything wrong.” Bro spits. “It’s just a headache- sounds like you’re using your fancy computers to make up a whole ton of shit.”
Prosopsi raises an eyebrow. Or tries to. Hilariously, it looks like she can't move her eyebrows individually, so she ends up moving both and looking surprised instead of doubtful. "Sure, Mr. Brody." She types something on the computer. "Run the scan again, focus on the leg where it's healing."
The two doctors sigh and do so.
Bro makes a face at Prosopsi, narrowing his eyes. …if Anti is stuck- could they even get him out? He hopes not… he doesn’t want to be alone here. He lets his head fall back on the table and looks at the ceiling. When he gets big injuries like this it fucking exhausts him. Probably cuz a lot of his energy goes towards healing the injury that would normally take months to heal. Think he once got a bone to heal in like what? A week? That still sucked ass though.
"Hmm." Prosopsi frowns. She begins to type something on the computer again.
The other doctor leans over. "Are you sure that's safe?”
“He seems very durable. But even so, that's why I'm messaging them for permission."
Bro’s head snaps up, “wait what? Asking permission for what?! Shouldn’t you ask the guy you’re gonna do things to for permission??”
"You'll be fine, Mr. Brody," Prosopsi says, not even looking back at him.
The other doctor leans over, muttering something that Bro wouldn't have been able to hear if he didn't have super hearing. "The leg is healing faster than usual, but it's not going to heal fast enough.”
“That's why I'm also asking permission for the accelerant," Prosopsi whispers back.
“Accelerant?! You are trying to use me for some fucking experiment, you fucks!” Bro growls, straining his wrists against their straps. “Ya broke your toy now you’re asking some other fuck to drug me more?! Fuck you!”
Prosopsi and the other doctor spin around in surprise. "You could hear that?" Prosopsi says, staring at him. She looks at the other doctor. "I was being quiet, wasn't I?”
“You were." He looks at Bro and frowns. "That shouldn't have been possible."
Bro glares and bares his teeth even more, blue power flickering weakly in his eyes. “Yeah. your whispering isn’t gonna work with me, bitch.” The other doctors mutter. They sound... excited.
“Q-Quit chattering like I’m an interesting fucking spectacle!” He snaps at the other doctors, “The second I get out of here I’m punching all of your fucking teeth out!”
A lot of the doctors back away, but the guards in black all reach for their weapons.
The headache spikes again. {Antagonize them when you're not strapped to a table,} Anti's voice says. Bro wants to snap back to Anti- but that would give away that he’s actually there. So he just glares at everyone.
A moment passes, and then the computer chimes. Prosopsi turns back to it and her eyes light up. "Good news! We can use the accelerant! Steve, please prepare it."
The doctor next to her nods and crosses the room, opening up the cabinet and pulling out some sort of white, bulky box. It almost looks like a Companion Cube from Portal, but with some wires and lights attached.
Bro watches the doctor grab this new thing and he makes a face. “…why do you all have a companion cube? Lost your interest in cosplay and just- decided to use old props for evil science?”
Prosopsi blinks. "...companion cube?”
“Oh from Portal!" one of the doctors says. "Yeah the accelerant does sort of look like that! Except obviously without the heart and with all the wires and... and stuff..." They trail off as literally everyone in the room stares at them. "Uh... we can... proceed." Bro looks over at that doctor and chuckles a bit.
The other doctor--is his name really Steve? That's a lame name--grabs a table on wheels. He sets the cube down on it and pulls it over so it's next to Bro. Once it's there, he pushes a button and the cube starts to hum, lights blinking and turning green.
Bro watches Steve wheel over the accelerant and stares at it, tilting his head. “…sooo I’m not dumb- I can guess from the name but… the fuck is this thing supposed to do?”
Steve doesn't answer, but Prosopsi does. "Theoretically, it should speed up processes caused by anomalous abilities," she says. "Outside or inside an anomaly's main body."
The accelerant hums louder, and Steve turns a dial. Bro suddenly feels the area around his broken leg getting warm. Like a fever that's localized around the injury.
Bro hisses as he feels his leg get warmer. “W-What the hell? Ugh that feels so fucking weird-!” He wiggles his leg almost like he can shake it off- before remembering it’s broken and biting back a whimper.
The heat grows, and some tingles shoot up from the injury, darting up his nerves.
{Uh, Bro... you still feel pain when you're healing, right?} Anti says, sounding worried.
Bro grits his teeth more as he grips his hands into fists. {Yeah I do! Usually it just tingles or itches if it’s like a cut or something. But the faster it heals the more it hurts-!}
{Well... that's very unfortunate,} Anti says. {You should probably brace yourself. If I had more power I could numb it but I don't think I can in this state, I'm sorry.}
{…fucking great. I hate these guys.}
The tingles start to turn into a stinging sensation, like needles inside his leg. Bro yelps slightly, digging his nails into the meat of his hand and biting his lip.
The stinging intensifies, becoming a hot pain that slices through his nerves. He feels it deep in his leg, in his bone as it heals.
Bro now cries out, shutting his eyes as he yells, “ow ow ow!! Fucking-! M-Make it stop!”
The doctors all take a step back. Prosopsi gestures at the two controlling the scanner, and they step forward, keeping the scanning light over Bro's leg where the break is. And still, the pain keeps climbing, coming in waves.
Bro lets his head fall back against the table as he tries to bite back the cries of pain that want to escape him, but to little avail. His back arches and he grips his hands tighter, something to distract him or stop this-!
"It's not injuring him, is it?" Steve asks, glancing over at Prosopsi.
"No, it doesn't seem to be," Prosopsi says, looking at the computer screen. "But advanced healing tends to be painful in most situations.”
“How much longer until it's fully healed?”
“Hmm... ten minutes." She glances back at him. "If you want, you can increase the waves to make it faster. But keep in mind." She jerks her head back towards Bro.
“F-Fuckers…! Y-You’re gonna make me endure this for 10 fucking minutes?!” Bro grunts out, eyes flickering with angry power.
Prosopsi looks over at him. "Would you rather have it at this level for ten minutes, or a higher level for a shorter time?" she asks bluntly.
Bro glares at her even more, baring his teeth. “I-I’d rather you guys just let my leg heal on its own! Without your fucking freaky machine!”
"We don't have time for that," Prosopsi says, turning back to the screen. "Dr. Regali?" She makes a gesture like she's grabbing something and turning it. Steve hesitates, but then nods and turns a dial on the accelerant. The pain spreads beyond the injury, consuming his whole leg.
Bro screams out and tries to jerk his leg as his neck arches back in response to the pain. “M-Motherfucker!! You’re a s-sadistic bitch!!”
"IRIS takes no pleasure in pain, Mr. Brody," Prosopsi says calmly.
“You’re a fucking liar!” Bro cries out, trying to blink back tears.
The straps are holding him down, preventing him from thrashing as the pain continues to spike.
In comparison to this, the shifting headache he feels as Anti moves around is nothing. There's a strange desperation to the way he continually darts through Bro's brain, like he's looking for some way to help. {Got it--maybe,} he says after a while. {Bro, can you hear me? I think I can knock you out, that's the most I can do right now--Will you let me do that?}
Bro is lost in the pain, trying to find something else to focus on but failing. He deliriously looks up as he hears Anti and then nods, “P-Please…!” He whimpers to him.
{Okay.}
And instantly, Bro feels a headache spike in the back of his head. It's nothing compared to the pain already happening, but it's still noticeable. But only for a split second. As right after it happens, his vision turns black, and everything disappears.
◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈
"How close are we, Yvonne?" Jackie asks.
"Getting closer." Yvonne is holding Bro's mask tight in one hand.
"More specifically?”
“I don't know, this spell doesn't tell you distance.”
“Calm down, Jackie," Frederick says. "It hasn't been that long. And I doubt IRIS would do much to Bro to permanently hurt him.”
They're driving down a highway, the same highway they've been on for the past thirty minutes. Jackie's leg is shaking as he looks out the side of the window impatiently.
Alt isn’t fairing much better. He’s trying to snack on more fruit leather to get strength up but he’s anxiously shaking his leg too and playing with his necklace as he watches the road outside his window. “C-Chase is tough… i-I’m sure he’s fine…” He tries to mumble to himself. Being cooped up in the car though is not helping.
Frederick glances back at Alt in the rear view mirror. "I'm going as fast as I can. A bit faster, even--”
“I-I know you are,” Alt mumbles, crumbling up the wrapper of his snack. At least he’s feeling a bit more prepared- less drained. Not perfect but at least there shouldn’t be any dark magic here… hopefully.
“Is there an off ramp soon?" Yvonne suddenly asks.
"Uh... I'm not sure.”
“We have to head off here soon," Yvonne says, pointing. "The trail is shifting."
Alt perks up at Yvonne’s question and tries to look out the window for any sign of a ramp. He doesn’t drive much though so… not sure what he’s looking for.
There's nothing in sight. Frederick squints... and then says, "oh" and suddenly swerves towards the wall of the highway!
"What the fuck?!" Yvonne says, grabbing onto the door. Jackie yelps and presses back against his seat. Alt glitches a bit in place then grips onto the back of his seat and braces himself. “Woah!”
But as they approach the wall--they don't crash against it in a terrible crunching collapse. Instead, they pass right through it... and find themselves on a small off ramp, smoothly driving downwards along the curving road.
Frederick glances at the other three, confused. "What?"
Alt looks back with wide eyes, “W-Was that an illusion…?” He asks, “W-Why would someone hide an off ramp like that?!”
Jackie lets out a breath. "God damn, angel, you can't just drive at what looks like a wall without saying anything!”
“Sorry, melon, I thought you all saw it," Frederick says. "As for why someone would hide it... clearly, someone doesn't want anyone to come this way."
Yvonne blinks. "I think this is the right direction..."
Alt slumps back in his seat and tries to calm down his heart. “…if this is the work of IRIS then… h-how? I thought they wouldn’t… use magic like SCLERA does… can tech really make an illusion that realistic…?”
Frederick frowns. "I don't know enough about technology to comment on that. Yvonne?”
“Same," Yvonne says.
"I did some searching on IRIS when Anti first mentioned he hacked them for multiverse knowledge," Jackie says. "They do seem to have impossible technology. They're famous for cameras that supposedly detect emotions. If they can do that, they can make an illusion like that." Jackie glances back at Yvonne and Alt. "We must be getting close, right?"
Alt seems nervous about that but nods, “We must be… that means we should start making a plan… right?”
"Yeah." Jackie nods. "Alright. What do you guys think we'll find there? Like I said, I did some research, so I know they'll probably have some big facility.”
“This spell will take us right to Bro's location, so we'll know where he is," Yvonne says. "We won't need to search around. So the only question is, do we sneak in or break in?”
“I vote for sneak in," Frederick says.
Jackie frowns. "The place will probably be covered in cameras, though... I say we bust in, fight our way to Bro, then fight our way out."
Alt hums and tries to think, “Me and Bro have tried to sneak into IRIS in a couple universes… and even if we try to be sneaky it doesn’t really work… Jackie’s plan could be our best bet. But it’s way more dangerous too…”
Frederick frowns. "Well, I suppose you would have the most experience... I don't know if I feel comfortable just fighting in, though. They surely have tight security.”
“What if we sneak in and then break our way out?" Jackie asks. "Alt can glitch us in, after all. And, uh, out, I guess."
“Glitching out will be easier than glitching in,” Alt says, “I can glitch into places I don’t know or haven’t seen- but it’s a bit harder… and also more likely for me to glitch us into trouble.” He hums and tries to think, “…the easiest way we’ve gotten into IRIS was stealing some uniforms and pretending to be guards… but that only worked because we had a Schneep that was working there….”
"Hmm..." Jackie purses his lips. "Frederick, Yvonne, do you have some sort of spell to change people's appearances?”
“Yep," Frederick says. "They only work on ourselves, though... Oh! Yvonne, do you still have that invisibility spell?”
“Yes, but I think it can only affect one person at a time," Yvonne says.
“Hmmm… oh! I could glitch inside someone’s phone!” Alt says, “It’s not… comfy but I can do it in a pinch. That way you guys can disguise yourselves and Jackie can go in invisibly!”
"Perfect!" Jackie grins. "We'll make sure to get you out as soon as possible, Alt."
Yvonne nods. "I'll get us right to where Bro is, no detours."
Alt chuckles, “I trust you guys. And I’ll be able to hear still so I can pop out if you guys need help.”
"Great." Frederick nods. "Now... there's no one else on the road. You know what that means." He leans forward, stepping on the gas. The car surges forward.
"Whoa!" Jackie laughs. "Fuck yeah! We'll get there before you know it!"
Alt glitches a bit in surprise then laughs too. “Yeah! Let’s go!”

The drive back to Frederick’s house has made Bro extremely sleepy now that all the adrenaline has worn off. So he’s leaning on Alt, peacefully dozing off. Alt is watching the landscape and reviewing some of his spells- trying to make sure he’s ready for what’s to come.
After a while, Frederick pulls back into the familiar driveway. “Okay okay,” he says, parking and turning off the car. “Anything we need?”
“Let’s check on Heather and Chase and tell them the updated plan,” Yvonne says, getting out of the car.
“Yep.” Frederick looks back at the Brodys. “You guys need anything specific?”
“A pillow-“ Bro mumbles sleepily.
“I think he’s fine.” Alt adds with a bit of annoyance- shoving him off lightly. “Oh but- Chase are you hungry at all?”
Bro blinks and thinks and then his stomach makes a loud grumbling sound. He blushes. “Uh… food yes- I am… famished I don’t know how I didn’t notice.”
Frederick laughs. “I have stuff in the house.” He reaches back and taps Bro, healing up the rest of his injuries.
Bro blinks and looks over himself in awe, “I know I heal fast but all that with a touch! That’s so insane!” He laughs.
“You should probably use your emergency crystal too,” Jackie says.
“Great idea.” Frederick opens the door. “Let’s go.” Alt and Bro follow the others inside.
Inside, Chase is still sitting in the beanbag, while Yvonne and Heather stand talking in the middle of the living room.
“—so we’re all going this time,” Yvonne is saying. “I’ll probably hang back a bit just in case, though.”
Chase looks over at the group as they walk in. “Wow… you guys look exhausted.”
“Yeah, cause we are,” Jackie says.
Bro waves at Chase and then nods, “yeah I just got kidnapped by evil scientists, I’m exhausted.” He says casually.
Chase blinks. “What.”
Anti glitches into the room. “IRIS.”
“Oh jesus fuck!” Chase jumps in surprise. “Fucking hell, bro.”
“Sorry,” Anti says.
Jackie walks over to the kitchen. “Hey Bro, what do you want? We have a bunch of leftover rice we can heat up. Or do you want something sweeter instead?”
Bro calls back to Jackie. “Rice sounds good! I’ll eat anything really!”
Alt sits on the edge of the couch and glitches nervously.
“Did the others tell you we’re going after Jack first? I’ll probably drop him off here.” Anti says to Chase.
Chase nods silently. “Will he… need… anything?” he says awkwardly. “I-I can share.” He holds up his water bottle. There is significantly less black liquid in it than there was before.
“No, he won’t need that until he starts detox,” Anti says. “…thank you, though.”
Alt tilts his head, “what is that black stuff anyways?”
“Oh right uh…” Chase winces. “So, uh, basically, you know how I was… super hypnotized? My brain kinda got used to all the black magic over time, so I… have to… It’s like getting yourself used to being normal again, you know, by slowly decreasing the amount you have, like with any… any thing…” He trails off, eyes going distant for a while. Then he takes a deep breath and shakes himself out of that state. “Anyway this is my designated black magic water bottle.” He shakes the bottle. “Can’t have it in a normal cup cause Frederick and Jackie will have a reaction to any remnants.”
Alt’s eyes widen, “oh… like… when you need to be weaned off medicine… god I’m…” His eyes flicker with more anger that he tries to keep back. “I’m gonna make Marvin and Jameson pay for what they did to all of you.”
Chase smiles sadly. “‘Preciate that.”
“Don’t worry, they’re going to rot in jail,” Yvonne says, looking at Alt. “Without their magic.”
Alt’s eyes burn as he nods, “…good.”
Meanwhile, Jackie is busy heating up some rice and chicken for Bro.
Frederick, having previously gone down the hall, returns holding a handful of small rocks. He watches what Jackie is doing. “Is that my good rice?”
“And it came out delicious! Cmon, angel, you know you never eat leftovers anyway.”
Frederick pauses. “Touche.”
Bro laughs, “Thank you for sharing?” He grins sheepishly. “Though I have a good tip to reheat rice! Put a couple ice cubes on them and microwave it for like 2 minutes, it comes out perfect!”
“Ah, the old rice trick.” Frederick nods. “I know that one.”
“I don’t!” Jackie gasps. “Frederick, how could you have kept that from me?”
Frederick laughs. “I didn’t think of it!” He plays with the rocks in his hands. They’re all dark green with red spots… and seem to be glowing slightly. Like they’re lit from within.
Bro laughs. Then he blinks curiously at the rocks in Frederick’s hands. “Ohh yo what are those? More magic stuff?”
“Yep. My emergency crystals.” Frederick holds one up. “Magicians can store power in crystals. Then, when you’re running low, you just—vvwoop!” The inner glow from the crystal fades out, traveling up his wooden hand and into his arm. His eyes flare green and he looks a bit less tired.
Alt hears them talking magic and glitches over to look. His eyes sparkle and he grins. “You can do that?! That’s so handy!”
“Yep!” Frederick grins. “Comes in handy for times like these. But I don’t always have the chance to come back here or remember to take them on a mission.”
“Gotta work on that,” Yvonne says.
Alt nods, “I should ask Blaise if that’s something we have back home… I don’t see why it wouldn’t be! If I could recharge like that and not have to eat my friends out of house and home… I think it’d be better for all of us!” He laughs.
The microwave beeps. “Here we are.” Jackie takes the Tupperware of rice out. It’s steaming, with vegetables and cubes of pork and chicken mixed in. “Bro, you can grab a fork from that drawer there. Want a bowl?”
Bro gets distracted by the sound of food and hurries over to grab and fork and takes the Tupperware from him. “Nah mate, don't want you to do more dishes! This is fine! Ohh and smells so good!”
“I know right?” Jackie says excitedly. “Frederick is SUCH a good cook!”
“Daw.” Frederick grins. “You’re just not used to food made at home.”
“I should be by now! And it’s still amazing!” Heather looks over. “Fengge is the best cook, I literally can’t order Chinese takeout anymore because it’s always mid compared to his stuff.”
“I second that,” Chase nods.
“I don’t eat, but it looks good,” Anti says from where he’s lingering in the corner. Frederick is momentarily speechless.
Bro digs in and then melts for a second and points his fork at Frederick, “Oh my god they’re so right! This is amazing!”
Alt laughs, “Chinese takeaway is always kind of mid unless you get it from like a good family owned place, to be honest so- I think that principle applies here.” Bro offers some of the food for Alt to try a bite and Alt does so. He blinks in surprise. “Man that is really good!”
“Ah, well uh… thanks,” Frederick says, unusually sheepish.
“Anyone else hungry?” Jackie asks, opening the fridge. “We have like strawberries and stuff. Oo, actually, I definitely want those. They go bad so fast.” Jackie grabs the strawberry carton.
Bro continues to scarf down the rest as Alt glitches over to Jackie. “Oh! Me! I want some strawberries!”
“Here, then!” Jackie opens up the carton and sets it on the counter.
“Get a bowl you caveman!” Chase shouts.
“Oh like you haven’t eaten dry spaghetti out of the box,” Jackie says to him.
“I thought we agreed not to talk about that!” Chase gasps. “You traitor!”
“I’m a traitor with strawberries,” Jackie says happily, taking some out of the carton and holding them under the kitchen faucet to wash them.
“Ha! Our aunts used to scold Chase for eating leftover spaghetti straight from the fridge container in the middle of the night growing up.” Alt grins.
Bro chokes, “Alt! What the fuck!! Don’t just out me like that while I’m eating!”
Alt laughs and glitches over to wash some strawberries too and happily starts to snack on them.
“Oh good, the shame is multi-universal, then,” Chase says.
Frederick drains more of his emergency crystals while they eat—apparently that does the same thing food does. “Oh hey Jackie, by the way, turns out that the dice got delivered to Mrs. Benson down the street.”
“Hmm? Hm!” Jackie quickly swallows the strawberry he’d just bitten into. “That’s good! What did she think?”
“She didn’t look inside.”
“Good good. Hope there weren’t any other problems.”
“Eh… probably not. We can go pick them up after this.”
Alt blinks in between Jackie and Frederick and asks, “Dice?”
Bro gasps dramatically and points at Jackie, “DND dice???”
“Yeah, Jackie’s a nerd now!” Chase says, grinning.
Jackie sticks his tongue out at him, then looks back at Bro. “It’s your guys’ fault. You and JJ and other-Schneep. We started talking about Dungeons and Dragons near the end of that adventure and it got me thinking about it.” He gestures at Frederick and Yvonne. “Then these guys started talking about it a lot after I mentioned that to them.”
“DnD is very popular with magicians,” Yvonne says, delighted.
“Because all magicians are nerds,” Chase laughs.
“We got you dice, too!” Jackie points out.
“Hey! Just cause they look nice doesn’t mean I’ll actually use them!”
“That’s what they all say,” Frederick says, grinning.
Bro has sparkles in his eyes as he stims excitedly. “Yeah!! You got people to play with!! That’s so exciting!! God, Alt! We need to get a group together!”
“We gotta convince Jackie or Jay to DM for us! You, Henny and me don’t know how to play!” Alt laughs.
"Whoa, hey, I'm not playing an actual game!" Jackie clarifies.
"Yet," Yvonne adds with a slightly evil grin.
"You've already rolled up a character and ordered special dice, just accept your fate, Jackie," Frederick laughs.
"Why else would you buy dice if you weren't gonna play?" Alt laughs.
"Cause they're cool-looking," Jackie mutters.
"That's fair," Chase says. "I did ask you to get those skull dice for me just based on how cool they are.”
Bro nods, "Dude yeah dice are so cool! I go with my Jackie to the game store all the time and I get distracted by them all the time!” Bro grins wide, "Face it Jackie~! You'll be a DND-er before you know it! Especially If you've rolled a character already?"
'What their name~?" Alt asks tauntingly.
“Uhhh... I don't have a full name yet, but I want to include something cool like 'Wyvern,'" Jackie says. "He's a rogue who saw something magical and terrible in his youth, which caused the town he grew up in to go to shit, so he left to become an assassin, but turns out he's haunted by strange voices--”
“See, when you're this excited about the character you're already in too deep," Yvonne says.
“Dude!! That sounds so badass I love it!!" Bro exclaims, grinning brightly.
"Hmm since its your first character- you could always pick a name similar to Jackie like... Jayce...? That would sound pretty good with Wyvern." Alt says.
Jackie tilts his head to the side. "Jayce... yeah. Yeah." He nods. "That really fits. I've been picturing him to kinda look like me too, so that makes sense.”
“Whoo!" Frederick grins. "Congrats, Jackie!”
“Tell them your character now," Jackie mutters, looking a bit embarrassed to share.
"Min Ju Pei? He's an eladrin ranger who was banished from his home for a crime he didn't commit." He smiles at the others. "My usual group lets Chinese be Elvish and Sylvan because I like to play fae characters so much."
“Ohhh eladrins!! Those guys are so cool from what I’ve heard about!” Bro grins. “That’s it as soon as I’m home I’m bullying my Jackie into starting a campaign. And you’re joining Alt!”
Alt laughs and throws up his hands, “okay okay!”
"Well... before you go home, we have to finish what we started here," Anti says. "Are you all ready?"
Jackie, Frederick, and Yvonne glance at each other. "I'm ready," Jackie says.
"All fueled up," Frederick agrees.
"I'm not up to full but I don't think I'll recharge to full in time," Yvonne says.
"What about you guys?" Jackie asks, looking at Bro and Alt.
Bro nods and stuffs the rest of the food in his mouth and gives a thumbs up. Alt adjusts his backpack and nods, “I’m ready. Let’s go save Jack!”
"Alright, let's go." Jackie puts the remaining strawberries away. "We're glitching there, right? Everyone link up. You too, Anti, you have to think of where to go so we can, uh... go there.”
“Good luck guys," Chase says.
"Yeah, come back safe!" Heather adds.
"Whoa!" Yvonne jumps. "I forgot you were here.”
“Wha--Eve!" Heather gasps with mock offense.
Frederick laughs. "We'll be careful. And hopefully we'll be back soon, with Jack in tow." He grabs Jackie's hand, and Yvonne grabs his other one.
Alt nods with determination shining in his eyes. “We’ll be safe.”
Bro puts his dishes into the sink then hops over to the others, taking Alt then Jackie’s hand.
Once everyone is linked up, Alt closes his eyes, and they all disappear in a zip. Glitching towards the Scanruil Forest.
They appear surrounded by trees. The forest is a bit darker than it was when Anti and Bro first appeared here, but it's still surprisingly pleasant.
Jackie looks around. "This seems too nice for a place where a black magic magician and blood witch are keeping a man imprisoned," he comments. "How do we get around the special ward again?”
“You have to not think about the destination," Frederick says. "Anti, where is it?”
“This way." Anti glitches forward a little bit.
"How do we not think about it while we're heading there?" Jackie asks, confused.
"You can do it a couple different ways," Frederick says. "I like to focus on the immediate world around me." He looks around the forest appreciatively. "Like trying to identify the types of trees. Or you could focus on solving problems, like puzzles or math.”
“Or if you're not a nerd, you can think of some story or talk to people to distract you," Yvonne says, and Frederick rolls his eyes fondly.
“Anti asked me about our last adventure while we were walking earlier. You know- before we got caught by IRIS.” Bro says, following after Anti.
Alt glitches to catch up. “Oh uh- how much did you talk about?”
"Not too much," Anti says. "I heard about your friends from some fantasy world came to visit you. You had a fun time showing them the conveniences of the modern world until SCLERA and Magnificent ruined it at the end. Then I mentioned how I've been around for a while and we got distracted.”
“A... fantasy world?" Yvonne asks, intrigued.
Bro grins and nods, “Yeah! They’re from a world that’s all based around magic and it’s like medieval but not the past- you know?”
“It’s called Glasúil,” Alt says. “The island we visit at least. The island was run by an evil king for a bit but it turns out that was an evil spirit possessing the real king. By the time they visited us about a month ago, they said they defeated the spirit and are working to repair the kingdom.”
“It’s sooo cool! We get to dress up when we visit and have gone on so many adventures there! I can’t wait to go visit again!” Bro laughs.
“Anything will be better than our last visit,” Alt chuckles.
"Glasuil...?" Frederick repeats, blinking. "That's funny... I think that's the name of some fantasy land in a book series I read as a teenager.”
“Huh?!" Jackie's head snapped to him. "What do you mean?!”
“Well I'm only remembering vaguely. The books took place in somewhere called Morri-Gazarr, I liked it because it was sort of like ancient China while still being different. I think that name was mentioned as one of their trading partners..." Frederick shook his head. "But it's been a long time since I read that series so I could be misremembering.”
“Oh! Maybe Glasúil is like that world’s version of Ireland! Cuz it’s very Irish from what we’ve seen.” Bro says.
“Even the language is like a strange form of Gaelic,” Alt adds. “I wonder… if I can remember that maybe we can ask them next time we see them if Morri-Gazarr exists. We’ve heard of a few countries from them- like Alterde is where their Schneep is from. So it’s like medieval Germany.”
Jackie glances at Frederick. "If you were reading a book series as a kid that took place in the same world these guys have visited... that would be insane."
Frederick is in awe thinking about that. “Anyway. You guys fixed your TRVLR for sure, then?”
“Of course they did, I helped!" Anti calls.
Bro grins and nods, “Yup! We haven’t really gotten to use it much since we got it fixed though- except for Alt taking the Fantasy guys back home.”
“It’s working just like it did before though.” Alt smiles. “I missed having it a lot. But now after all this is over- we can just start having fun adventures again. Or… I dunno- I’m practicing scrying to try to see if I can glimpse into worlds and… try to see if our friends are ever in trouble. So we can help.”
"Yeah... you mentioned scrying earlier," Jackie recalls. "You saw that Foxglove guy in a vision. That's fucking insane, man. But it'd be super helpful if you could know we're in trouble without us needing to contact you.”
Alt nods, “to be fair I just learned recently I can do it… on the same adventure we fixed the TRVLR so I’m still learning a lot. The Jameson from the fantasy world though- he’s an oracle. He can see better visions than I can.”
“Oh but his kinda like make his whole body shake and …stuff.” Bro says, “But actually his vision last time saved us from not knowing you and Marvin were under Mag’s spell.”
“Well… thank god for that.” Alt sighs.
“I wanted to call you guys to tell you to come here, actually," Anti says. "But Sam told me that wouldn't work unless your phone was, uh... special, somehow. And that it'd be best if you brought your phone or computer here so They could do some magic to it so it can reach through worlds."
Alt and Bro blink at Anti, then Alt’s eyes widen and he glitches to be closer to Anti. “Wait wait! Sam says they can try to make sure our phones can reach through worlds?! T-That’d be amazing!”
Anti nods. "They said that it's not something They can do often, or else the fabric of space-time gets worn down. But that it's clear you guys are gonna travel anyway so might as well do it to your phone. It might be of some help."
Jackie looks concerned. "What happens if the fabric of space-time gets worn down?”
“Oh, a whole bunch of stuff. The layout of places will begin to shift, time may start to lag or loop, whole buildings might slip between the folds of the world... bad shit." He glances over at Alt and Bro. "If you remember that series of worlds you guys got caught in after the TRVLR first broke, space was thin there. Weird things that happened there were probably a result of that."
Alt and Bro both shiver at the mention of that place. “Yeah… that place was… freaky.” Bro says slowly, picturing that freaky him that killed all his friends.
Alt frowns, “I mean if it’s that dangerous… then maybe we shouldn’t- I don’t want to risk that happening to our world or… anyone else’s.”
"...and... you think a few phone calls will cause damage on that scale?" Anti asks, raising an eyebrow.
Alt blushes a bit and looks away.
"Hey, don't be a bitch, we have no frame of reference for this shit!" Jackie says.
"Ha. Well a single magical inter-universal cell phone won't cause that much damage at all, not unless you used it for a couple centuries. Or if there were multiple that existed in many worlds." Anti grins at Alt. "Sam wouldn't have suggested it if They didn't know it was safe."
Alt looks back as Anti grins and he seems to relax. “Well… I do trust Sam. And you, of course.”
“Man that would make things a lot easier! And it’s be sick as fuck- like! Here’s my phone, yeah I can call other dimensions, no big deal! Like what??” Bro laughs.
Jackie laughs. "Bro I'd give you my phone number right away. We could friend each other on Discord--oh! And we can do that Dungeons and Dragons game with JJ and other-Schneep! Though, uh, we should probably do our own games first so we can get a handle on the rules.”
Bro’s eyes light up and he jumps a bit in place, “Yes yes yes!!!! That would be so fun!!”
Alt laughs, “We’ll have to see if my phone being inter-dimensional works on discord too then-”
“Ohhh I’m so excited to try our own games too!!” Bro yells, stimming a bit.
“Aha! So you do want to do a game!" Frederick says triumphantly.
"H-hey! I mean--shut up!" Jackie blushes a little.
"Aww, don't worry, Jackie, you can join my usual group easy enough, Briony's been wanting to try DMing anyway--" Frederick suddenly stops speaking. His eyes go wide, and he points ahead. "Is that... it?"
In front of them, through the trees, appearing like it suddenly snuck up on them, is a small building with worn plaster sides, its windows and doors boarded up.
Bro and Alt halt in their steps as the small building appears in their view. Alt’s eyes glow slightly as he glitches forward. “That- that must be… right?”
“Man way to stay distracted gang,” Bro laughs a little.
“We must’ve walked right through the ward just now,” Yvonne says.
Jackie reaches to his belt and pulls out his staff, extending it to his full length. “Alright, what can we expect now?”
“There might be some shields as we walk closer.” Frederick’s eyes flare green. “I’ll take care of them. There could also be triggers for traps and even summons. Which are like… magical constructs to protect something.”
“I’ll wait back here,” Yvonne says. “Call me for backup with that sphere. You still have it, right?”
“IRIS took it but I got it back and put it in Bro’s pocket,” Anti reports.
Bro blinks and then pats down his pocket and pulls it out, "Oh! So you did- ha!" He puts it away again and gives Yvonne a thumbs up.
Anti glitches forward, waiting outside the boarded-up door. “We have to take this down too.”
“Can’t we just glitch inside?” Jackie asks.
“Yeah probably. But just in case, you know?”
Alt glitches over to Anti and touches the door. "So... just blast it down?"
“Whatever’s fastest, we’re going for speed over stealth,” Anti says.
“Wait!” Frederick hurries over, muttering something under his breath and making a slicing motion with his hand. A dark purple film flickers into view around the cabin before it gets sliced through the middle and disappears. Frederick does that two more times, slicing through darker and darker films, until he does it for a fourth time and nothing happens. “I said I had to take care of the shields.”
“…Sorry,” Anti says awkwardly.
Frederick waves him off. “It’s fine, it's fine. You’re anxious. Go ahead, you shouldn’t be blocked now.” Jackie runs over to join him and the glitches. Bro also hurries over to the others.
Alt smiles and nods at Frederick and then holds a hand to the door- and blasts a huge bolt of magic to try to blow it open.
The bolt forms a hole in the center of the door, wood flying everywhere—but then a loud shrieking noise immediately starts.
“Gah!” Jackie covers his ears. Alt jumps back and puts hands over his ears, shutting his eyes tight. “Ah!”
“That’s an alarm spell!” Frederick gasps. He claps his hands together and green glitter suddenly fills the area, and the sound greatly decreases. Now it’s tolerable.
“I thought I’d have dispersed that with the shield! Maybe it was set up so that it only activated if something is destroyed—?”
“Either way we’re on a time limit now.” Jackie reaches through the hole in the door and unlocks it from the inside. “Hurry! Clear the rest of the boards.”
“I got it!” Bro says as he winds back a fist then tries to punch through the rest of the boards blocking the door. They splinter under his attacks, easily clearing the way to the inside.
It’s dark in the cabin. Frederick conjures up some floating balls of light, illuminating the area. It looks normal enough at first. There’s a kitchenette area with a counter by the door, then the rest of the space is a living area, with a sofa, a coffee table, and lots of bookshelves. But every inch of the walls and the floor are covered in writing, black runes and symbols. There are also three doors in the room, each of which has a circle filled with curving lines and runes drawn on the center in crusty red-brown.
Anti glitches inside. “Careful what you touch.”
Alt lingers in the doorway, “so many runes! How are we supposed to avoid them…?”
Bro jumps into the air and hovers towards the ceiling. Alt gives him a withering look but Bro just gives him a grin and a thumbs up back.
"Hmmm oh! Did you ever play 'the floor is lava as a kid?" Jackie asks. "Anti, Bro, move those chairs over here."
Anti nods. He glitches over to the counter, where there are a couple chairs and stools, and starts positioning them in a line from the door to the coffee table in the center of the room. The floor runes would be difficult to avoid, but turns out, his feet aren't actually touching the floor, just hovering an inch above. As soon as a chair is nearby Jackie hops onto it, wobbling a bit, then hops onto the next one. Bro gasps a bit and helps to make a path too.
Alt makes a face, “…oh my god.” Then he sighs and starts to glitch across to a safe spot on top of a chair. “I guess this is better than nothing!”
“Do you think Marvin sets off his own traps when he visits here? It must be inconvenient-“ Bro muses as he pushes more stuff to make a path.
"Skilled magicians can add exceptions into spells," Frederick says. "To compare it to DnD, since we were talking about it, it's like how sorcerers have that spell shaping ability where they can choose to not affect their allies." He mutters something else under his breath and steps into the room. A green platform forms under his shoe, preventing it from hitting the floor. He takes another step, and another platform forms. Then another, and the last platform disappears as another forms.
Jackie makes a face at him. "Show-off.”
“Shh." Frederick's face is screwed up in concentration. "This... isn't a... normal spell in my... my book. I need to think on it."
Jackie steps onto the coffee table and looks around. "So... where now? I'm guessing through the doors with the bloody runes drawn on them."
Alt rests on the sofa and nods. “That’s my guess. Blood magic is very powerful… it will probably take a lot to break through those.”
“Even if I punch them?” Bro asks.
Alt opens his mouth then thinks, “uh actually… I dunno. They’re probably set up for magical attacks more than physical- if I had to guess. Marvin is probably more worried about like the ABIM, other magicians, and Anti.”
"What d'you think, Frederick?" Jackie asks.
Frederick, still concentrating on his spell, glances at the rune circles on the doors. He shrugs. "That's clearly magick--witchcraft, not magic. I'm not an expert in that.”
“Hmm... that's fair." Jackie looks at Anti. "What about you?”
“If you can punch it without damaging the runes, that'll be good," Anti says. "But I'm sure that if you hit them, they'll trigger something.”
“...huh, oh yeah." Frederick glances at the doors again. "Look, the runes around the doors all seem to point to them. They've linked the magick and magic together."
“Huh.. so this is Jameson and Marvin together then… no wonder Mae called him ‘the blood witch’.” Alt says.
Bro flies over to one of the doors and looks it over. “So- try to punch outside the circle? I can do that!” He cracks his knuckles then tries to kick through an empty spot on the door closest to him.
And yet, the door seems strangely sturdy, despite just looking like normal wood.
“Yo what the fuck?!” Bro growls and flies back before trying to punch it again.
This time Bro's fist goes right through, forming a hole in the door. "Can you open it from the inside?" Jackie asks.
"They're not actually locked," Anti says. "They're being magically blocked.”
“Do you know what door we're supposed to open?" Frederick asks.
Anti shakes his head. "One of them must have access to the underground area where Jack is being kept... but I wasn't able to get in here yet, so I don't know which one."
Now that Bro has broken through- he tries to see if he can open the handle at all. “So if they’re not locked then I should be able to open it right?”
“If the runes are what are keeping them closed then… shouldn’t we destroy them?” Alt asked, looking at Anti.
Anti fizzles for a second, thinking. "Destroying them might cause something, but we're running out of time with that alarm going off. Go ahead. We just have to be sure we're heading for the right door.”
“Maybe if we destroy them all at once?" Jackie asks.
Frederick blinks. "The fuck?”
“Because then we won't waste time exploring them one by one!"
“I think Jackie has a point!” Bro says. “We are running out of time!”
Alt’s been having trouble thinking because of the alarm so he just throws caution to the wind and tries to blast open one of the doors with a burst of magic. Bro follows his lead and fully tries to break the one he’s been working on.
Alt’s blast seems to be deflected by the circle on the door.
Bro, meanwhile, manages to splinter off a large piece of the door… which flies through the air and lands directly on top of one of the runes on the floor. It, and the ones around it, start to glow an acidic purple.
“Alright guess we’re doing this!” Jackie says.
Frederick runs over to the coffee table, dropping the spell he’s using to avoid the floor and landing on the table next to Jackie. He points to the third door, shouts “Tengwo!” and vines burst from the floor around it with such force that the door comes off its hinges. He looks at Alt. “Don’t attack the circle directly!”
Meanwhile, the glow from the runes on the floor is rising, forming a solid-looking bubble that continues to get bigger… morphing in shape.
Bro yells and ducks as the door bursts and then looks at the purple glowing runes with wide eyes, “uhhh guys?! The fuck is that?!”
“Ignore it Chase, we can probably glitch out past this stuff!” Alt says as he tries to blast the door again, aiming off the circle.
This time Alt misses the door entirely and hits the runes surrounding it. They also start to glow purple—and suddenly spit out balls of black light at everyone in the cabin!
Anti glitches out of the way of the projectile heading to him, and Jackie dodges but still gets grazed, but Frederick—getting ready to cast that hovering spell again—is totally blindsided and yelps as it hits him square in the back. He falls forward off the coffee table, landing on his hands and knees, barely missing landing on more runes. Jackie grabs him and pulls him back up.
The bubbling purple light is growing bigger, forming some sort of shape…
Alt gasps and gets hit back by the black light and off the sofa, skidding across the floor.
“Alt!” Bro shouts after him and is about to dive to grab him off the runes when he gets hit too and goes flying through the air and hits a wall.
Alt and Bro both activate more runes as they hit the floor and wall. The ones Alt hit on the floor suddenly turn into spikes and shoot up into the air, thankfully barely missing him. Alt glitches back to avoid the spikes, cutting part of his face in his attempt to get away.
The one Bro hits starts to bubble as well. And the big glowing shape on the floor has now fully formed. It’s a glowing purple, translucent cat—a big one with faint spots. Some sort of jaguar or leopard, with glowing stars for eyes and black fangs. It snarls and lunges at Bro-- He yells in fear as it charges—only to get knocked to the side by a flurry of shadows and glitches as Anti tackles it.
Frederick looks back and forth between all the chaos, then points at the other two doors and casts that same vine spell, breaking them off the hinges as well. “Fucking go! Look for anything strange!”
Bro blinks in surprise and he eyes the bubble behind him- then he hears Frederick and he nods, choosing the middle most door and flying through it. Alt rubs at his face then nods and goes through the left most door, glitching into the threshold.
Jackie watches them go, then jumps over to the last door, barely missing another floor rune. The jaguar tries to attack him, but Frederick pushes it back with a wave of green magic, then uses that hovering spell to run over to Jackie, following him into the room beyond.
This… is an empty broom closet. “Fuck!” Jackie curses. “Oh real exciting!”
Alt is in a bedroom now, with a canopy bed that looks like it hasn’t been touched in forever. It’s dark, but he can tell that the decorations here are a bit different than expected. There’s an antique dresser and a tall standing mirror. The only sign that Marvin and Jameson have been here is the stack of books on the trunk at the foot of the bed. Alt pants and looks around then curses, briefly looking at the books. “I-I don’t think there’s anything strange in here…!”
Bro finds himself in a bathroom. Nothing special about it, though some of the bottles on the counter look less like hair and skin products and more like fantastical potions. Other than that, it’s normal enough, with a bathtub and toilet and a fuzzy bath mat… which is slightly crooked.
Bro blinks and lands on the floor. “Huh… okay- bathroom. Suppose even evil bastards need to take a leak.” He looks around then looks at the bath mat. Huh… he tries to see if there’s anything underneath it.
Bro pulls the rug aside to reveal more runes. These ones are arranged in two diamond shapes, one inside the other. They also seem to have been carved into the tile. A red brown stain discolors the inside of the shape. Bro looks at this in confusion. “Uhh Anti?! I think I found something!” He calls back.
Outside, the bubbles from the wall rune Bro touched form into a shape. This one is a small cat, the size of a normal house cat—but with wings. It flies at Frederick and Jackie, and Frederick quickly conjures a shield to stop it.
But meanwhile, the jaguar charges through the bedroom doorway, snarls at Alt, and leaps. Alt spins around and just barely glitches out of the way of the jaguar. He snarls then sends a bolt of lightning its way.
The lightning hits the jaguar but doesn’t slow it down. It lands on Alt, heavy and oddly hot. Alt gasps loudly as he’s driven to the floor. He looks at the construct with wide eyes, heaving a bit in panic.
It tries to bite him but Anti glitches over, driving a knife into the back of the construct’s head and using that to physically jerk it away from Alt. “That’s great Bro!” He shouts back. “Everyone head over there!”
Alt gives him a silent nod in thanks then glitches to be by Bro.
Frederick and Jackie glance at each other, communicating silently. Frederick drops the shield and Jackie uses his quarter staff to smack away the winged cat construct as it tries to attack them. Frederick then uses that same hover spell and grabs Jackie, fully picking him up as he runs over to the bathroom. Once there, Frederick drops Jackie and the spell and blocks the door with another shield just as the flying cat smacks into it.
Bro jumps as everyone starts appearing then winces as he hears the winged cat hit the shield. “Dude nice work! But anyways! Weird runes! Magic dudes, what do you think?”
Alt looks over the runes and notices the red stain, “…more blood magic?”
Frederick glances at the runes on the floor. “Yep, definitely. And it’s carved in so it’s frequently used. No risk of wiping stuff away over time.”
Anti glitches over. He also looks down at the runes, and nods. “I’ve seen this before. This must be how you get to where Jack is. But this outer layer.” He points. “It… keeps anything inhuman from using the ritual.”
“And what is the ritual?” Jackie asks with trepidation.
“You need to stand in the middle then activate it by dropping blood at your feet,” Anti says. “Not necessarily yours.”
“That’s what I thought.”
“So… keeping you out.” Bro says, frowning. “Makes sense…”
Alt stands up and pulls out his pocket knife from his backpack and flicks it open. “I’ll go first- I’m no stranger to blood magic.” He goes to stand on the runes and nicks his finger, going to hold it over the runes and letting his blood drop on the carvings.
“Wait you’re what—” Jackie starts to say.
But the moment Alt’s blood hits the tunes he vanishes.
Frederick looks worried, but gestures for the others to go ahead. “I’ll stay up here, keep the constructs out of the room so we don’t come back up and get immediately killed.”
Jackie gives him a side hug. “Alright. Remember to call Yvonne if needed.”
“Of course.”
Anti looks at Jackie and Bro. “Bring him back,” he whispers.
Jackie nods. “We will.” He steps onto the runes next, drawing a throwing knife. He hands it to Bro, then uses a second one to cut the back of his arm. His blood hits the runes and he disappears as well.
Bro nods seriously to Anti, “Don’t worry dude, we’ll be out soon.” He takes the knife from Jackie and cuts the meat of his palm, letting his blood touch the runes and disappearing after the others.
The three guys each feel a rushing sensation, like going down a water slide in the dark. One after another, they arrive at their destination. They find themselves in a small room with a plaster floor, a similar set of runes carved into it. The ceiling is tile, and has… is that a bathtub? Wait a moment, this room looks a lot like the bathroom they were just in, only upside down. There are a few differences besides that obvious one, too. More runes line the walls, drawn in black in even horizontal lines. Stones are embedded in the plaster walls, giving off white light that flickers like candles.
“Whoa…” Jackie shakes his head. “That was weird.”
Alt looks around the room in confusion. “This is weird too… What is this place? A pocket dimension?”
“Whatever it is, it's freaky…” Bro says with a shiver. “Let’s just find Jack and get out of here…”
“Anti said that it was beneath the cabin… but I don’t know if he meant literally beneath or like, metaphysically beneath,” Jackie recalls. “But yeah. Let’s find him and get out. Look, the door.” The door is also upside down, meaning they’ll have to step over part of the wall to get out. Jackie leads the way. Alt hums and glitches after Jackie, Bro close behind.
The doorway leads into an upside down copy of the living room, complete with doors, boarded-up windows, and furniture attached to the ceiling. The runes and glowing stones continue in here. In addition to the furniture on the ceiling, there’s normal furniture on the floor as well. A bed, a table with two chairs, a small sofa, a mini fridge and microwave underneath the upside down kitchenette area (where some of the “upper” cabinets are open to show boxes of food.) Lying on the bed… is a pale, thin figure.
Bro looks around the room in confusion. “The fact that there’s two sets of furniture up there and down here is like really freaking me out.”
Alt notices the figure on the bed and gasps, glitching over. “J-Jack?!”
“Jack!” Jackie also runs over.
Jack is lying with his eyes open, blankly looking up to the ceiling. His hair is longer, messier, grown down to his chin, and his beard is thicker as well. He doesn’t respond to Alt or Jackie at all.
Bro hurries over too and leans over Jack. “W-What’s wrong with him?!”
Alt looks worried as he tries to shake Jack’s shoulder.
Jackie checks Jack’s pulse, pressing two fingers to his neck. “He’s… he’s fine… physically,” Jackie says in a shaky voice. “O-other than what being stuck down here for a year and a half does to a person. It’s—it’s just—m-magic, I think. The spell they cast on him. It’s clearly more intense th-than the one they cast on Chase.” But that worries him. Chase took months to start being himself again. And he was still able to talk and respond while hypnotized. Jack is just… lying here.
Alt’s shaking isn’t having the slightest effect.
Alt now moves to put a hand over Jack’s forehead and mutters, “S-Should I try to see if I can like… go in his mind and dispel the magic? Or… what? Should we just carry him out like this?”
“Carrying someone who’s dead weight is hard… for anyone who doesn’t have super strength!” Bro grins. “We can do whatever is easiest… we do have a time limit though-“
“The time is a problem,” Jackie mutters. “But give it a try, Alt. If it doesn’t work we’ll just take him out and try again later.”
Alt closes his eyes as his shoulders buzz with glitches and soon enough he tries to glitch into Jack’s mind, diving into his forehead.
It’s like diving into the ocean. A black violet ocean. He sinks deeper, and deeper, and deeper… he’s barely into it, the surface still visible, when the ocean around him violently reacts. It feels like it grabs hold of him and shoots him straight back up and out.
Alt is shot out of Jack’s head in a burst of black and violet glitches. He skids across the floor and wheezes, black magic swimming in his eyes for a second as he tries to cough past the waves.
“Alt!” Bro cries and hurries over to him, helping him up. “What happened?”
Alt shakes, “t-Too much- way too much I… I couldn’t get f-far enough to even break past the magic…!”
Jackie watches Alt, eye wide. Once he’s sure he’ll recover from being pushed out like that, he turns and looks back at Jack. “Chase had to have someone from the ABIM come to the house to help break through the spell,” he whispers. “Every day. For weeks. I guess I just hoped this would be different.”
“For weeks?!” Bro gasps.
Alt shudders as he blinks the magic out of his eyes. “C-Chase wasn’t even down this deep…”
Jackie takes a deep breath, then turns to the others. Eye burning, shoulders square, posture still with a new determination. “We’re getting him out of here. Bro, can you carry him?”
Bro nods quickly and hurries over to Jack, loading him up in his arms. “It’s gonna be okay guys,” He reassures Jackie and Alt quietly. “Getting him out of here is sure to help- now c’mon!” He tears it back the way they came.
Alt shakes himself out then hurriedly glitches after Bro.
Jackie nods and hurries after the others towards the bathroom. “Alright, I’m still bleeding from this cut,” he says, “So we can just—” He steps onto the runes and vanishes before the blood even hits the floor. Guess it’s only a requirement to get in, not out.
Alt and Bro blink at this then Bro hurries to step on and vanishes- Alt follows right behind him.
The bathroom above is chaos. Vines and plants have pushed through the tiles, leaving only the ones with the runes fully intact, and climb up the walls. Frederick is holding his hands up to keep the shield reinforced, surrounding the whole bathroom with the shimmering emerald light. Through the doorway, flashes of purple and green shine through as Anti fights the constructs. Another winged cat has been summoned, along with one that looks like a fucking lion.
“H-hey,” Frederick says, looking back at the others. “You got him?”
“Woahhh!” Bro gasps at the carnage then nods, holding up Jack. “Yes we got him!”
“Link up and I’ll take us back to Yvonne!” Alt says quickly, hurrying over to Frederick and offering his hand. Bro quickly follows and Alt grabs onto his shoulder since his hands are full with Jack.
Frederick grabs Alt’s offered hand—the shield immediately dropping—and as Jackie grabs his other hand he shouts, “Anti they’re back!”
Anti glitches over—and gasps. “Jack!” he shouts, voice cracking. He gently takes Jack’s hand.
“Go!” Jackie shouts.
Alt closes his eyes and glitches them all back out into the forest. Once there Alt shouts out, “Yvonne, link up so I can get us all back!! I think stuffs gonna try chasing us!”
Yvonne jumps in surprise. “Holy—okay!” She grabs onto Alt’s shoulder.
As they glitch away, the last thing they see is the lion construct leaping through the door and bounding towards them.
◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈
They reappear in Frederick's living room again.
Alt staggers once they’re all back and leans up against the couch, trying to make sure he doesn’t fall over from the jump.
Heather is pacing back and forth, and Chase is visible in the dining room, messing with stuff on the table.
Chase immediately drops what he’s doing and runs over. “Are you all okay?! Is Jack okay?!”
Bro adjusts Jack, almost afraid to let Chase see him. “Uh… he’s not… he’s not great, dude. He’s like… completely unresponsive…”
Chase stops short as he sees Jack, letting out a breath that's almost an "oh." Then he inhales, steadying himself. "It... i-it's okay, I've been thinking about it, and... I think I remember them talking about stuff... H-he does things, you just have to--to prompt him first. H-here, if you put him on his feet he... he should be able to stand? M-maybe?"
Anti doesn't look away from Jack, but he nods slowly. "That makes sense..."
Bro looks down at Jack in confusion but tries to follow Chase’s advice. “Okay… here you go dude,” He whispers to Jack, trying to set him up on his feet. Alt hovers anxiously by, just in case.
Jack sways where he is, but doesn't fall. He just stands there. Anti hovers nearby, still holding his hand gently, like he's made of glass. The worry is understandable, as Jack looks beyond frail. The loose T-shirt and sweatpants he's wearing aren't that big, but he still seems to be drowning in them.
"We need a specialist here as soon as possible," Frederick mutters, taking out his phone. "I'm texting Nick. I told him to be on standby."
Alt and Bro look at Jack with concern.
Alt looks at Anti and says quietly. “I… I tried to see if I could g-get inside his mind but… all that magic I… I barely got past the surface…” he holds his arms. “I wish I knew how to help more…”
Frederick looks at Alt sadly. "That's good to know... W-we have mental magic specialists in the ABIM, they're trained for things like this. It... sounds like they'll have their work cut out for them. But they can get through to him eventually."
Alt nods to Frederick but he still looks worried. He’s seen people down deep with Magnificent. Hell, he’s been there but… never like this. It unnerves him to his very core to see.
Bro tilts his head at Jack and then asks, “Jack? Would you like to go… sit down? Maybe have some water or something…?”
Jack doesn't answer Bro's question, or even look at him.
"I, uh... I-I figured he'd need food and water, so I... made some stuff." Chase points back into the dining room.
"...thanks," Anti says shortly, not looking directly at Chase. He starts walking that way, pulling Jack with him. Jack doesn't react for a bit, but eventually starts following, in a shuffling, slow walk.
Bro watches Anti lead Jack away then growls under his breath, “They don’t even ask him to do anything nicely? Just! Order him around like a dog?! Where are those fucking bastards-?! I’ll fucking really kill them for this!!”
Chase looks at Bro sadly. "Yeah... I don't think he can 'hear' us, anyway. Asking nicely probably wouldn't do much, but... yeah. It's the thought that counts.”
“We can look after him," Jackie says quietly. "While he's recovering."
Frederick nods. He looks over at Heather. "Nick is on the way with a couple other specialists. They can get things started. You remember Nick?”
“He's the dark-skinned guy with long hair, right?" Heather asks.
"Exactly."
Over in the dining room, Anti is helping Jack to eat. Looks like Chase made soup.
Bro sighs, still looking angry but understanding. He’s never even met their version of Jack before this but… this is so so cruel. “I don’t… I don't get it. How could any… human do this to someone? Don’t they feel remorse? Regret?!”
“I… I don’t really think… they’re human anymore…” Alt says quietly, digging fingers into his arms. “I’m not sure there’s anything human… left in them.”
"Well they definitely have human DNA, or else they wouldn't have been able to go through their own defenses around Jack," Jackie points out. "But, uh... yeah, I get what you mean. In their souls or whatever." He folds his arms, idly trailing a finger along the scars on his arms.
"Human souls or not, they'll get what's coming to them," Yvonne promises.
"Yeah, putting them in magic jail?" Jackie drawls. "You sure that's enough?”
“Jackie," Frederick says in a warning voice.
"What?! You can't say they won't keep trying to do bad shit!”
“Yeah, but you can't go down that spiral. It's not for them, it's for you."
Jackie softens a bit and looks away.
Bro looks at Jackie too and sighs. “…I keep talking a big game but… killing is wrong… even if people deserve it. They can’t pay for all the people they hurt if we kill them. And from what I understand… a magician having to live a life without magic? That’s probably worse than death for them.”
Frederick raises an eyebrow. "I'm sort of offended that you think me and Yvonne wouldn't be able to live a normal life without magic."
Bro flushes and waves his hands, “Wait that’s not what I-!”
Yvonne laughs.
"You have a point, though--those two are way too into their magic," Frederick continues. "They wouldn't know what to do without it.”
Bro coughs and nods, “Yeah I meant for… m-magicians like them. Like Mag and shit- the greedy kind!!”
“So... Do we need anything before we head out to get Schneep?" Jackie asks. "I do think we're on a bit of a time limit for that."
Alt nods to Jackie, “I’m a bit worried about the glitching distance but… I-i think I’m ready. Chase?”
“I’m ready! Let’s make sure to hit these monsters where it hurts and save Schneep!” Bro says, punching his fist into his other hand.
Anti looks over at Alt, then back at Jack. He touches his shoulder gently. "I'll be right back," he whispers. Then he glitches over to Alt. "I can help. Just by giving you some energy, my glitching isn't safe for living things." Alt looks back over at Jack and then nods to Anti. Bro hurries to link up too.
Anti glances at Chase and Heather. "...take care of him while we're gone," he whispers.
Chase nods. "Least I can do. This wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been so... insistent on keeping him.”
“We'll look after him!" Heather says. "And we'll let Nick and the others in when they get here."
Frederick, Yvonne, and Jackie all link up, and then Jackie holds a hand out for Alt to take. "Let's aim to be a bit closer this time," he says jokingly.
Alt chuckles, “I’ll try my best. Maybe Anti can help with that too.” Then he closes his eyes and imagines the hotel and glitches them all back to Mirygale.

Bro wakes up in a strange place. Again. For the third time. This time, he's on the floor of a wide room. The floor is made of a lot of metal squares, brightly lit by panels in the ceiling. In one wall is a wide window, through which he can see Dr. Prosopsi and the other doctors from before.
Bro almost wants to just keep his eyes closed and pretend to keep sleeping. But eventually he clumsily pushes himself up and groans, rubbing at his head. He takes in the room then glares once he sees all the doctors through the windows. “…okay… what fresh hell do you have for me now?” He asks, annoyance and exhaustion clear in his voice.
Dr. Prosopsi presses a button on a control panel. It turns out to be an intercom, as her voice comes through a speaker, sounding tinny. "Hello, Mr. Brody! How's the leg?"
It's... fine, actually. Completely normal.
Bro makes a face at her- then looks down at his leg. He experimentally flexes it and tries to see if it hurts. …nope- it’s like he never broke it. “…S’okay I guess- “He mutters. He doesn’t want to give Prosopsi an even bigger head.
"Good to hear!" Prosopsi says cheerfully. "Now, you're currently in our testing facility. This is used to help train our C&C guards, but it was currently upgraded for our EX project--”
“I thought that was cancelled?" says one of the doctors, their voice more distant. Is that the same doctor who talked about Portal?
Prosopsi looks over at them, briefly letting go of the intercom button to talk to them. Then she turns back to the window. "My point is, we have some physical tests to do."
“EX project?” Bro questions. Then he sighs and leans back on his hands. “…fucking figures. You only see me as your little lab rat right now. You gonna make me run through mazes?”
"Not exactly." Prosopsi gestures at the other doctors, who immediately mess around with the control panels. One of the tiles on the ground slides open, and a platform rises up from the ground. On it are three humanoid robots with thin limbs and cubes with cameras for heads. Two have heavy metal spheres for hands, while the third has curved blades. They run forward--or roll forward, as they have wheels on their feet--and charge at Bro.
Bro yells in surprise and immediately bursts into the air to dodge these guys. “Fucking shit! You’re seriously gonna make me fight without my fucking shoes??!”
“Maybe you can have them if they seem like they’d be a help!” Prosopsi calls.
The bot with the blade hands reaches up and swings its blade towards Bro’s stomach.
Bro looks over to Prosopsi and gives her a look like she’s crazy- and just barely dodged getting sliced in half by the bot- it’s blade just grazing his stomach. He growls and then builds up energy in his foot to try to land on this robot’s head and crush it.
The bot dodges out of the way, its wheeled feet giving it an advantage. Bro lands heavily on the floor and the other two bots roll forward to attack with their blunt metal spheres.
Bro gasps then gracefully rolls away to dodge, landing behind the robots. He builds up energy on his fist and tries to punch one of the robots from behind. Maybe he can dent it enough to mess with its mechanisms!
His fist connects and the robot flies forward, a huge dent in its back. It skids across the floor and stops moving.
But there are still two more to deal with! They both charge Bro at once.
Bro leaps into the air to avoid their actions then goes to try to kick the robot with the knife hands- seems like that’s the biggest threat!
His kick lands directly on the joint where the robot’s neck meets its body. Something must have been damaged there because it collapses immediately under Bro’s weight—but the last one comes in swinging!
Bro lands and spins around, grabbing the last robot by its arm and then throwing it into the nearest wall.
The bot goes sailing through the air. Despite the room being wide enough to fit a couple tennis courts, Bro is able to throw it at the wall with the window, where it smashes right next to the glass.
The doctors inside all jump in surprise. Prosopsi looks impressed. She turns to talk to the others excitedly.
Bro pants in the center of the room, blue glowing brightly in his eyes as he glares at the doctors. “That good enough for you?!” He yells.
There's no immediate answer, as the doctors continue to discuss.
{I don't think it's over yet...} Anti says slowly.
“Yeah no shit…” Bro whispers, “They don’t seem like the type to give up easily.” He takes the time to massage out his muscles and his foot. “Jeez… it sucks to fight without good soles…”
{That does seem a bit unfair,} Anti says. {I guess they were worried they might be weapons. I've been told it hurts more to get kicked by a shoe than a bare foot.}
“Cowards-“ Bro mumbles.
"Alright, time for the second test," Prosopsi suddenly says over the intercom. Three tiles slide open, platforms rising up. One has two robots, another one with blades for hands, and one with nunchucks for hands. Another platform has a robot that's taller, without wheels for feet, its head a pyramid shape instead of the square camera.
And another... has a pair of boots. Not his shoes, but they look sturdy enough.
{Oh they heard you,} Anti comments.
Bro braces himself and gets into a fighting stance. Then he sees the boots and his expression falls into a look of annoyance. He looks back at the doctors and gestures, “Really? This feels patronizing!”
Prosopsi smiles and waves.
Bro flips Prosopsi off.
The big robot's head swivels around to him. The point of the pyramid starts to glow, and a beam of orange light shoots at him while the other robots start to charge.
Bro rolls out of the way of the beam and the charging robots. He shakes himself out and then zips into the air, trying to kick the pyramid headed robot in its head to damage the laser.
His kick slams against it--but this pyramid is more sturdy than the cube cameras the other robots have. Bro yelps in surprise as his kick doesn’t hit. Damn that hurt!
The laser bot takes a step backwards and its arms fly up towards Bro's leg. It's going to sandwich his leg between them! He tries to scramble back but the moment the robot has a hold of his leg it throws him to the side.
He’s flung through the air and hits the ground briefly before pushing back up. He heaves for breath and wipes at his face. He’s gotta take down that laser… he builds up energy in his hand and then shoots out a bolt of concentrated electricity towards the center of its head.
The lightning hits the robot just as it's charging up for another beam attack. Its head jerks back and it collapses to the ground.
Bro laughs out triumphantly as he watches the big behemoth go down. That's the big one taken care of, but the other two are still in play, rushing for Bro. They come at him from either side, one swinging its nunchucks, the other slicing with its blade hands.
Bro just barely dodges the nunchucks, leaping back into the air- only for the blades of the second one to slice across his back. He yells out in pain and quickly flies up to the ceiling and presses against it to get his bearings. “S-Son of bitch! These things don’t hold back!” He breathes.
Okay- next threat is the one with the sharp blades. He builds up energy in his hand and then darts down as fast as he can to try to cave in that one’s head. Usually he has to hold back when fighting criminals- but here he can go all out!
His fist slams into the blade bot's head, denting it immediately. The lens of the camera pops out and it collapses. Through the window, the doctors look surprised and delighted. Then the nunchuck one immediately attacks again before Bro can really take in his triumph.
Bro uses the other robot he just destroyed as leverage to spin around and kick the nunchuck robot back in its camera too. The kick hits the bot right in the lens, and it also collapses.
Bro lands on the ground, more blue power glowing brightly in his eyes and somewhat in his veins as he catches his breath.
For a moment, there's quiet.
Beyond the window, Prosopsi and the other doctors are buzzing excitedly.
{...you're fucking badass, Chase,} Anti says, impressed. {I'm guessing you hold back when it's people?}
Bro pushes back his hair and nods, grinning. {ha thanks! Yeah, don’t really fight anything but humans so I hold back a bunch. S’been a while since I got to attack with full force!} While he has a second to breathe, he goes to put on the other pair of boots- though he frowns at them. They’re not as fun as his hero boots… they feel weird too.
{I don't know why they didn't just give you your own shoes back,} Anti says. {Or like, your jacket. The fuck could be in your jacket? Assholes.}
{You fucking said it… stealing all my identity as a hero-!} Bro makes an annoyed face as he finishes tying up the shoes. {and it’s fucking cold in these labs- my jacket would be so nice right now…}
The intercom turns on again. "We're going to be skipping a couple levels of the tests, since you've proven to be very capable," Prosopsi says. Some of the tiles in the floor and ceiling rise up and down, forming columns, platforms, stalactites, and holes in the floor.
Bro whips around as the room transforms, eyes widening. “Yo- what the fuck?!”
More of the tiles open up, and more robots rise up into the room. There are two of the blade hand robots, two of the pyramid head robots, and two really bulky robots that are at least seven feet tall with arms thick as barrels. The pyramid robots instantly fire at Bro.
Bro gasps as he sees all the new robots and instantly dives behind a pillar on the ground. “You all are fucking crazy!!” He shouts towards the window.
He tries to gather his thoughts and experimentally tries to see if he can kick the pillar- only for it to hurt like a bitch! Okay okay- no using these for weapons… it’d be easier to grab a robot probably. He can still use these to his advantage though…. Somehow. He tries to see where the nearest robot is and dives towards it to try to punch its camera out.
This time, it's like the bots are expecting him. The one he's aiming for swivels out of the way, and the other blade bot rolls over, swinging the blade right at his face!
Bro isn’t expecting them to be ready for him- the fuck?? Are they learning or something?! And so he’s not prepared and gets slashed across the nose and cheek. He yells out and slams to the ground, holding his face. “F-Fuck!”
The blade bots continue to approach, trying to slice him. Meanwhile, the pyramid bots are charging up as well, and the big bots are slowly approaching, their footsteps thudding heavily on the ground.
Bro isn't ready- the blades come down and shred into his arm and side. He screams and starts to panic- there's so little places to escape! These things are gonna kill him! He desperately looks around for one of the holes in the ground and tears towards one.
The bots try to slice him some more as he moves past but he's too fast, even dodging the beams that the pyramids shoot towards him. He dives into a hole in the ground. It's about four feet deep, its sides made of the same smooth metal as the floor.
Bro presses up against the walls of the hole, sinking down and pulling his knees towards him. He struggles to catch his breath. He grips at one of his numerous injuries and pants out, "T-Theyre fucking trying to kill me! Y-Yeah I heal fast but at this rate i'm gonna bleed out if I keep getting slashed by those fuckers! T-There's too many!"
{If it's any consolation, I don't think IRIS would want you to die,} Anti says.
Indeed, Bro hears the sound of collapsing metal. Seems like some of the robots have been deactivated.
"Subject--Mr. Brody, please come out and continue the test," Dr. Prosopsi says through the intercom. "It will continue until all enemies have been defeated." The heavy thuds of the big robots are continuing to approach.
Bro growls as he hears Prosopsi catch herself from calling him ‘subject’. He does not want to keep jumping hoops for these bastards! “Fuck you!” He calls out to them. But he doesn’t want to be pommeled inside a hole… so he pushes off and flies back out into the air to see what he’s still dealing with.
It looks like the two blade bots have been deactivated, and are now sprawled on the floor. The two heavy bots are still around, as are the pyramid bots--who both immediately aim for him when he appears. One fires.
Bro immediately gets grazed by the laser on his leg. He bites back a yelp then yells as he hurtles himself down towards the pyramid bot with two fists outstretched, charging both up with energy to knock into it like a bullet.
He crashes into it, tackling it to the ground. The other pyramid robot tried to shoot him with another beam in the middle of his dive but he was too fast. The bot beneath him is immediately broken. The heavy bots are getting close! He just has the two of them and the last pyramid bot now.
Bro sees the others are closing in and he tries to breathe. He grabs the foot of the robot he just downed and tries to throw it towards one of the heavy bots.
It smashes against the heavy bot's head with a great deal of force. It wobbles on its feet then crashes to the ground. It's not deactivated yet but it's having trouble getting back to its feet. The other heavy bot speeds up just a bit. It raises one of its thick arms and swings it towards Bro. To the side, the last pyramid bot fires another blast.
Bro is more preoccupied with the laser than the heavy robot. So he dodges the blast but ends up getting hit out of the air by the heavy bot like someone swatting a fly with a fly swatter.
He groans and pushes himself up, trying to think about how to approach this. He’s starting to feel a little dizzy… He zips towards the other heavy robot and tries to see if he can grab its arm and hold on. If he can get a good grip- maybe he can yank it under its legs and throw it off balance!
He grabs its arm easily enough--but it yanks its arm out of his grip with just as little effort, sending Bro spinning through the air.
Bro yells in surprise as he’s flipped in dizzying circles and struggles to right himself. Okay… bad strategy. Maybe he should just do what he did with the other one. He shifts course and goes to kick the pyramid one in the head.
It's in the middle of charging up when Bro kicks it. This seems to have caused some sort of backfire as the pyramid head snaps backwards and some of the panels burst open, sending out sparks of orange energy. Bro whistles, impressed at the explosion and giggles to himself. “Eat it fucker!”
The heavy bot is continuing forward, pulling back its arm for a big punch. He does not see the punch until the last second- and then it’s punching him in the gut and sending him rocketing across the room. He hits the ground then rolls, coughing up a lung and wheezing as he holds his stomach.
If there's a bright side to this, it's that the heavy bot is still very slow, so he has some time to recover while it walks towards him.
{C'mon, you're almost there!} Anti says encouragingly. {You're faster than this thing! Maybe you can get behind it or something?}
Bro coughs and struggles to take in a breath as he watches the robot lumber towards him slowly. He’s really starting to feel all the hits he’s taken and all his injuries… using so much energy all at once isn’t something he’s used to. If he uses up too much his body won’t be able to heal either… so he needs to end this quickly. Maybe then he’ll get a rest…
He bites down a pained whimper as he pushes himself back up to his feet. He is faster… maybe there’s a weakness on its back? He cracks his neck then rushes towards the last robot and tries to go between its legs to get behind it.
It tries to bend over to catch him but these things must not have the best coordination because Bro slips right between its bulky arms and legs. There! On the robot's upper back, just under where the neck joint connects, is a clear panel of some sort, through which some circuitry can be seen.
Bro grins and then rears back in the air before diving down to punch it with as much force as he can muster.
The clear material cracks and his fist goes right through! His hand is buried in circuitry and wires. The heavy bot tries to turn around to get him, but of course, Bro is on its back. It tries to reach back to him but its arms aren't meant to bend that way.
{You can control lightning right?! Do it now!} Anti says.
“What?! N-Not as well as Alt can!” Bro cries. But he grabs onto the wires and pulls them back slightly, trying to concentrate. He tries to redirect the lightning in these wires to overload the robot!
Some sparks fly. The robot freezes in place. It sways back and forth for a moment and then falls forward, slamming into the ground. Bro falls with it, still holding onto its back and wires.
Through the window, Bro can see the doctors chattering excitedly. He shakily pushes himself to his feet and glares at the doctors, blaring his teeth as his eyes glow almost neon blue and sparks fly around his fists. He staggers off the robot and starts to walk towards the window- he’s gonna break all their fucking faces in! He’s not some spectacle- some lab rat for them to watch run around!
But then, the room dips and spins and Bro wavers, swaying slightly. Then his eyes roll up a bit into his head as he collapses bonelessly to the floor.
As he falls, he begins to smell something sweet... and a bit familiar...
Bro tries to lift his head and croaks out, “w-wait… no…!” He doesn’t want to fall asleep again!
And then darkness consumes his vision.

They drive for a while before Yvonne tells them to divert to a small dirt road, and then they drive for a while down that before she tells them to divert again.
Frederick is a bit upset, saying that his car isn't designed for going off-road, but he does it anyway. Alt is nervously balled up in his seat, hugging his backpack and watching the landscape outside their windows for any sign.
Not long after that, a tall stone wall comes into view. The tops of buildings are visible poking over the wall... and one has the IRIS logo on the side.
"We should probably stop here and walk the rest of the way," Jackie says.
Alt glitches upright as he recognizes the logo and then nods. “Y-Yeah… I should be able to just glitch us back here once we get everyone.” He says as he hops out of the car and puts on his backpack.
"Hopefully," Frederick mutters. "I don't want to leave this car behind. I still have four thousand pounds left on the loan."
Jackie laughs. "It'll be fine." He follows Alt out of the car.
Yvonne grins. "If Alt can't glitch us, I'll teleport us. It'll take the rest of my magic, but it's worth it." Then she and Frederick step out as well.
"Alright." Frederick claps his hands together. "Jackie, get over here."
Jackie walks over and Frederick puts his hands on his shoulders. They begin to glow green, and then the light ripples over Jackie's form from the point of magic. The invisibility follows after that, and Jackie disappears, leaving only a person-shaped distortion in the air.
Alt blinks and then grins, “Jackie! You look just like Chase did when we hid from Glitch!” "Oh I do?!" Jackie looks down at himself, spinning around, causing the person-shaped distortion to shift. "Cool! “I really need to learn an invisibility spell…” Alt sighs.
“I could print a spell out for you when we get home if you want, Alt," Frederick offers.
Alt grins at Fredrick and nods, “That’d be great!” Then, he shakes out his head and straightens up, “uh- should I get into one of our phones first or… wait until we’ve walked a bit more?”
"That depends, are you comfortable doing that?" Yvonne asks.
Alt shifts on his feet and is quiet for a second as he pulls up his mask. “…I can walk for a bit-“
"Then let's wait until we're closer," Yvonne says.
"Alright, let's go, then," Jackie says, and some footsteps appear in the grass as he starts leading the way towards the facility.
Yvonne laughs. "That looks funny." Alt laughs too and follows after him.
Frederick grins as well. The two of them start heading that way too. "The disguise spell is concentration-based, so it's probably better that we wait until we're closer to cast those as well," he says.
Alt nods and looks at the IRIS buildings. He holds his arms and sighs. “I hope Chase is okay… who knows what they could be doing to him…?”
"If only we could contact Anti, I'm sure he would know," Jackie says.
"Whatever's happening, we'll get him out fast," Frederick promises.
"These guys are scientists, right?" Yvonne says. "Are they doing some sort of experiments on him?"
The air shivers--no wait, that's Jackie shuddering. "Let's not talk about it."
Alt opens his mouth to say but then shuts it at hearing Jackie. He nods. “If these guys are anything like SCLERA then…” He bites his lip. “I’m also worried about Anti… he can’t feel pain so I’m sure he’s fine physically but… god I hope we can find them both fast…”
"It is very weird that he hasn't reached out to us," Jackie says slowly. "But maybe he's just trying to help Bro escape?”
“I'm sure he's fine," Frederick says.
"Mmm..." Jackie sounds a bit uncertain. "Well... he's not undefeatable. One time, Schneep and Marvin came up with something together. Some sort of magical EMP. They managed to capture Anti. So if they could figure something out, surely an organization like IRIS could." He sighs. "Let's not talk about it."
Alt shudders wildly at that and grips his arms. He can’t imagine getting taken down like that… “I-I hope he’s helping Chase. H-He would be freaking out, being in there alone. It’s been a long time since he’s been alone…”
Frederick puts a hand on Alt's shoulder. "Whatever's happened in there, we're almost there now." He nods towards the facility walls. "We'll be able to help." Alt gives Fredrick a tight smile and nods.
The walls slowly loom closer. After a while, Yvonne stops in her tracks. "This seems like a good spot to prepare," she says. "We don't want to get in range of any cameras. " She takes a deep breath. "What do we want our disguises to look like? We can adjust them as long as we're concentrating on the spell, but where do we start?"
Alt makes a face and thinks, “I mean… I can try to describe some of the doctors I saw in my visions… but that runs the risk of us running into the real ones…”
"A place like this must have security," Jackie mutters. "Those people are a lot less memorable than the scientists in charge surely will be. Did you see any security guards in your visions?"
“That is a good idea! Much easier to sneak in that way- more anonymity!” Alt quickly nods, “Hm, they wear all black and have mirror visors over their eyes. And the logo on their chest in white.” He taps on his chest where he remembers them being.
"So... like this?" Yvonne closes her eyes. Foggy wisps of blue magic wrap around her arms, legs, and torso, and solidify into a uniform that vaguely looks like what Alt described.
Alt watches and then glitches around Yvonne to look. “Hmm… the fabric is more… like windbreaker material? And the gloves are longer- and they have a gun holster on their right leg… and their boots are taller. Oh! And now that I remember the logo is on their sleeve not their chest! About this big.” He gestures to the size. “But other than that- great!” He grins sheepishly. “Sorry sometimes the details don’t come until you see it the wrong way you know?”
"No no, that makes sense," Yvonne says. As Alt talks, her disguise shifts around, growing and shrinking and changing material appropriately.
Frederick watches this, then closes his eyes. Green tendrils of power wrap around him, and an identical uniform appears around him.
"That looks good on you!" Jackie says.
"Really?" Frederick grins.
"I mean--I like your suit better, but yeah!"
Frederick laughs.
Alt laughs too and then gives them both a once over. He gives them a thumbs up. “Looks perfect!” He nervously buzzes with glitches as he looks around. “Uh once I’m in one of your phones- I won’t be able to see but I can hear… and I can glitch out the second you need more or I think you guys are in trouble, okay?”
"Thank you, Alt." Frederick smiles at him. "We'll find Bro quickly." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone, holding it out.
Alt nods with a small smile and then glitches into Fredrick’s phone. The surface jitters with the colors of his glitches and it seems like his phone probably isn’t useable now- it looks like it does when a phone’s light screen gets broken.
Yvonne leans over and frowns. "That looks... concerning.”
“I'm going to assume that's normal," Frederick says. He puts his phone back in his pocket--passing right through the disguise to do so. "Alright, let's hurry." He and Yvonne add some illusory helmets to their uniforms, then they and Jackie hurry forward.
There's an indent in the wall, with a metal door inside it. They walk up to it, hesitating for a moment. But then a camera in the corner beeps, a red light on it turning green, and something clicks. The two of them glance at each other and Frederick reaches for the door, opening it up.
"What was that about?" Frederick mutters.
"I guess there was something that recognized our uniform," Jackie replies.
They pass through a short tunnel, and emerge into an interior yard.
"Where do we go from here?" Jackie whispers.
Yvonne pauses for a moment. "The big one in the middle."
This courtyard is filled with people. Most of them are wearing blue or white coats, while some are wearing the black guard uniforms. Frederick and Yvonne shift their disguises slightly to fill in some details. Nobody seems to look at them for longer than a glance... though some people do a double-take or squint at the distortion caused by invisible Jackie. The group walks up to the central, largest building and find a doorway... but this one doesn't open like the one that led into the facility. Frederick grabs the handle only to find it locked.
"Keycard scanner," Jackie points out. There's a black box next to the door. "What d'we do?"
Alt struggles to figure out something but then tries to make Frederick’s phone vibrate like he’s gotten a text.
"Oh." Frederick takes the phone out again--his disguise instinctively forming a pocket in a reasonable place so it doesn't look like he's pulling it straight through the fabric. "Yeah?"
Alt’s voice comes out from the phone like he’s whispering from the other line. “Try to put your phone towards the scanner- maybe I can short it out!”
Frederick nods and does so.
Alt reaches out with his magic and tries to send a small electrical charge to open the scanner.
The black box lets out a zzzrt! sound. Yvonne tries the door again and it opens easily. "Yes!" Jackie says. "Thanks, Alt!"
Alt chuckles, “No problem. Hopefully I can do that with any others we come across.”
"Hopefully," Frederick says, and they head inside.
This area looks vaguely like an office building. They walk into a wide lobby-like space, with rows of chairs and tables with magazines. There are hallways leading left, right, and forward.
"Yvonne?" Frederick asks.
"Um... up," Yvonne says.
"Great. We need to find stairs or a lift, then."
Alt hums as he listens. “All these fancy places have lifts- there’s gotta be one nearby…”
"Guessing you don't have any particular preference to which way we go, then," Frederick says. "Forward it is, then."
They head down the hallway, passing doors as they head deeper into the building. Eventually, they reach a T-intersection. To the left are more doors... though these are a bit different, being made of dark, heavy-looking metal. To the right... is a set of elevator doors.
"Yep, there it is," Jackie says. He hurries over and presses the button, leaving Frederick and Yvonne to catch up. By the time they get there, the elevator has arrived. The doors open and they head inside--and all look up.
"Huh... why's there a square missing from the ceiling?" Yvonne asks. "Doesn't seem safe."
Alt hears this and hums. “…maybe- do you think that might have been Chase trying to escape?! He’s strong enough to punch off a metal door like that!”
"Ooo maybe!" Jackie says, cheerful at first. But then he pauses and continues in a duller tone. "But I think the place would be on alert if he actually escaped so... I guess he failed.”
“It's a good sign, though," Frederick says determinedly. "Yvonne? Where next?”
“Just press buttons to take us up floor by floor," Yvonne says.
Frederick nods and pushes the button for the next floor up.
Alt makes a sad noise at this. “I always feel like places like this keep their unethical stuff on the lowest floor- but maybe this one is different.” He muses.
"This whole place is unethical," Jackie mutters. "I don't think it gets more or less ethical depending on the level."
“…touché-“ Alt replies.
They head up to the next floor. Yvonne frowns and shakes her head. "Go up still. I think... it might be that one." Frederick presses the next button. The elevator continues up. By the time it stops at the next floor, Yvonne nods. The two of them glance at each other and hurry out through the doors, finding themselves in a short white hallway with a pair of double doors at the end.
Alt makes sure he’s quiet as they exit the elevator- but his nerves are making the phone buzz with a bit of static and the screen glitches a bit more.
"Ah shit, there's another keycard scanner," Jackie reports, walking up to the double doors. "Alt?”
“We're getting really close now, it might be safe for you to come out," Yvonne reports. "If you want," Frederick adds.
Alt zips out of the phone as soon as he gets the okay, taking in a couple deep breaths. “God- that always feels so weird… tingly-“ He then looks at the scanner and places a hand over it- trying to short circuit this one too.
But this time, when the scanner buzzes, the door doesn't unlock. Alt blinks in surprise when it doesn’t work and looks down at his hands, “Huh.. I don’t think being in the phone messed with my power- in fact I think it gave me a little boost… weird-“
"Maybe this one just has higher security, don't worry about it," Jackie says to Alt.
"Oh, for--" Yvonne throws a hand in the air. "Alright, we're dropping the subtlety." She disappears in a puff of blue smoke, reappearing on the other side. She tries to open it from there--but the door is still locked.
Frederick sighs. "It sounds like you did something, Alt. Maybe... maybe we can now unlock it with magic?" He puts a hand on the door and concentrates. There's a clunk, and when Frederick tries to open the door this time, it pulls easily.
Alt blinks as the door opens then chuckles, “Well- at least something worked! Where to know, Yvonne?” He asks as he hurries through the doors.
"Hmm." Yvonne pauses. This door is lined with more metal doors. Thick ones. She walks forward, leading the others, and points to one of the doors. "Through there. He's through there.”
“I bet these are cells or something," Frederick mutters.
Alt’s heart leaps through his chest as he rushes towards the door Yvonne pointed too. He almost glitches through by himself- but then stops to think and looks back at the others. “S-Should I try to glitch us all through?”
"You go in, Alt," Jackie says. "We'll stay out here and figure out a way to open up the door." Frederick is already crouching, examining the door.
Alt looks grateful at them all and nods, glitching through to the other side.
The room beyond is a strange long rectangle shape, with a bed and an alcove with a curtain at the far end. Bro is lying on the bed. He's barely coming out of whatever drugs they used. And he… he looks terrible. So many cuts on his arms and a nasty looking one on his face. He looks exhausted, dark bags under his eyes and tears in his clothes. And missing clothes too! Where are his jacket, hat and boots? He has some boots on but they are not what he would wear.
Alt gasps and glitches over to be by his bed and tries to shake him awake. “C-Chase?!”
Bro groans quietly and blearily opens his eyes, still groggy and unable to focus from whatever was used to knock him out. But… the sounds and the smell of metal in the air. “A…Alt…?” Bro croaks.
Alt chokes on a quiet sob and goes to hold his hand. “Y-Yeah, Chase, it’s me! We’re here to get you out of here…!”
Bro smiles dazedly and then looks behind Alt, something occurring to him. “A-Alt… c-careful… cameras-!”
Alt stiffens at this and looks around the room, trying to see where the cameras are in the room.
There are two in the room, hanging from diagonal corners. And... definitely facing towards Alt and Bro. In addition to them, one of Bro's ankles is in a cuff tethering him to the ground. A green light comes from the doorway, and tendrils of green magic creep from the gap. There's a creaking groaning sound as the others outside work on getting in. One of the cameras swivels to face the door instead.
Alt narrows his eyes in determination and throws out both of his hands- each one sending a bolt of lightning to try to destroy the cameras.
The nearest one sparks and fizzles, drooping in its cradle. The other one, despite being hit by lightning, only sparks a little but seems functional.
Frederick pulls the door open. He lost concentration on his disguise spell, so it's very clear who he is. He looks at the sparking cameras, then at Alt. "Well. Definitely time to get out of here, then.”
Alt looks ready to blast the other camera again, eyes flaring with magic- but gets distracted by hearing the door open. He nods.
“Bro!" Jackie's voice shouts. Bro suddenly feels a pair of arms around him.
Bro stiffens slightly at being grabbed since he’s still waking up. He weakly opens up his eyes and is confused why he doesn’t see anything. “…am I being hugged by the air right now? Or am I still tripping?” He mumbles out.
Jackie laughs. "I'm invisible, Bro! It's me, Jackie! We snuck in--Frederick, can you dispell the spell?"
Frederick claps his hands, and Jackie suddenly appears. "Like that?”
“Yeah, thanks." Jackie looks back at Bro and grins. "It's so good to see you! Once we realized what happened we ran right here.”
Bro blinks then laughs and hugs Jackie back- though it’s not as tight as he did before. “H-Hey! God… it’s so good to see you all…”
“Are you alright? I mean, obviously not, but--" Jackie says. Bro looks at everyone and breathes, “H-How did you guys know I was here? How did you find me?”
“I used another scrying spell- and Yvonne was able to track you,” Alt says with a smile.
“Mmm thank god you all found me… I dun wanna fight more robots…” Bro slurs sleepily.
Yvonne pokes her head into the room. "Oof. What did they do to you?”
“I can fix that." Frederick walks over. He places a hand on Bro's shoulder, healing up the worst of the wounds. "I can do more later, but I want to save my magic until we're out of here."
Bro blinks in surprise as the biggest wounds, his back, side, cuts on his legs and bruised ribs feel loads better. He seems to get some clarity back and he nods. “T-This is plenty, Frederick… I-I hope I won’t slow you all down…”
“You? Slow us down? C’mon Chase,” Alt tries to laugh.
Bro looks serious though as he shakes his head, “They made me use a lot of my power earlier- I-i haven’t been this low since I first got my powers…”
Alt’s eyes widen in surprise. “Woah…”
Bro then also kicks up his tethered leg with a grimace. “I’m also stuck… I-I haven’t been able to break out of this- and we need to f-find where they’re keeping Anti…!”
Alt gasps, “So they did capture him?!”
"What the fuck?!" Jackie gasps.
"I--they were able to --what the--how?!" Frederick actually looks more shocked. Anti has always seemed invincible and super powerful to him.
"God..." Jackie shakes his head. "Well we pretty much just revealed that we were here now, so we have to hurry!" He looks at the tether. "These are like the things in SCLERA... JJ was able to break out of those, wasn't he? So Frederick, Yvonne, you should be able to do something."
Yvonne steps forward. She holds up a hand, gathering some magic in her hand. "Hold still," she says, and then shoots it forward at the tether.
It slices through the plasticky material easily enough.
Bro shakes his foot once it’s off and grins tiredly at Yvonne. “T-Thanks.” Yvonne makes an okay sign with her fingers.
Bro staggers to try to push himself up, “You’re all right we need to… to hurry and get Anti and get out of here.”
“Once we find him, I can glitch us all out,” Alt reassures, going to help Bro up. Bro staggers a bit but seems okay to walk. “Do you know where Anti might be, Chase?”
“Um… I-I almost got to him before… he’s… lower- lower than we are right now. Right, Anti?” Bro asks, looking up.
Alt gives him a look like he’s crazy.
{Right,} Anti says. {After seeing what was in the elevator shaft, I think I might be on the bottom floor.}
Jackie raises an eyebrow. "Is he talking to you telepathically?"
Bro shakes his head, “A part of him is stuck in my brain. The… wern..tickle… something. I’ve been able to hear him this whole time-”
“Wait- he’s stuck in your brain?!” Alt asks, mouth falling open.
“We can worry about it later! He says he thinks he’s on the bottom floor.” Bro says quickly.
"So... Anti is able to split into two people?" Yvonne says, confused. "Being in two places at once?”
“That makes sense, actually," Jackie says.
“I mean… he’s just like… energy,” Alt says. “He’s been able to split between my phone and Bro’s and be in multiple places… he’s never tried to go in our brains though-“
Frederick frowns. "Wait, did he mean the ground floor or the basement?”
“There's a basement?" Jackie asks.
"Yeah, didn't you see on the buttons? B, G, 1, 2, 3. Basement, ground floor, first floor, so on."
{...well I didn't know there was a basement but now that I do, I think I'm there,} Anti says.
Bro stands up straighter, “Basement, he says basement.”
“Let’s hurry then!” Alt says, grabbing onto Bro and offering his hand to the others. “I can glitch us to the lift!”
Frederick and Yvonne grab onto each other, and then Alt's hand. Jackie is about to, but he then stiffens and turns towards the door. There are footsteps thundering down the hall--from the same direction they came from. "Go go go go go!" he says, grabbing onto Alt's shoulder.
Alt immediately shuts his eyes and focuses on getting them back onto the lift.
They glitch away, appearing in the elevator car--which is currently open, facing the hallway which is now filled with guards in black uniforms. "Shit!" Jackie gasps.
Frederick and Yvonne both simultaneously conjure a shield in front of the open elevator doors, just in time to block a barrage of darts that the guards fire at them. Jackie lunges for the buttons, slamming the one to close the doors.
Bro gasps and tries to duck into the corner. Alt glitches over to try to help Jackie, pressing the basement button rapidly.
The doors close slowly. The guards are able to fire various weapons at the shields--taser lines, more darts, a couple freaking laser beams--before the doors shut and the lift moves.
"So... we should probably expect a bunch of guards to shoot at us when we arrive in the basement..." Jackie says slowly.
“Goddamn they have a lot of different kinds of weapons!” Alt breathes. Then he nods. “I think- I got an idea for a spell that’ll get them out of our way.” He looks to Fredrick and Yvonne. “Can either of you like- summon water? I know it sounds random but.. trust me.”
"Hmm... how much water do you need?" Yvonne says. "We both know a spell to do so, but it doesn't conjure that much.”
“We can make more, but it'll drain more magic than usual," Frederick adds.
“Hmmm… enough to make a decent puddle on the floor-“ Alt replies, “Hopefully spreading as far as the guards will be. It shouldn’t need too much…”
“Alt… are you gonna shock all the guards at once?” Bro asks warily.
Alt grins, magic sparking in his eyes. “That's the plan.”
Yvonne grins. "We can definitely conjure up that much."
Frederick raises an eyebrow. "Sounds like we should throw it far."
Alt nods, “As long as we don’t get wet and stay here we should be fine-”
The elevator is slowing down--and it stops.
"Get ready!" Jackie says, pushing everyone to the sides of the elevator. Frederick and Yvonne mutter something under their breath, the same spell. Green and blue magic flares in their respective hands, and beach ball-sized globes of water hover in the air.Bro tries to bite back a nervous whine as the elevator stops, still hunkering down in the corner. Alt builds up electricity in his hands as glitches build up around him. He watches the door.
The doors open up, revealing a concrete hallway with ducts and pipes lining its walls. Sure enough, it is full of black-uniformed guards, though not as many as upstairs. They all point their weapons, and Frederick and Yvonne immediately hurl the water at the ground, causing large splashes. Once the water is down Alt glitches in front of everyone and slams down his hands in the water, lighting it up with as much electricity as he can muster.
Lightning arcs through the hallway, and all the guards immediately stiffen and then collapse before any of them can do anything more than aim their weapons.
Alt glitches to his feet then grins wide, pumping his fists in triumph. “Fuck yeah! That was awesome!”
Jackie whistles, impressed. "Nice job, everyone!" Bro peeked his head out to watch then laughs. “Dude… that was sick-!”
{I'm definitely down here,} Anti says in Bro's mind. {Forward. Uh--after the electricity dies down, of course.}
Bro looks up as he hears Anti then tells the others. “Anti says he’s for sure down here- we can go forward… once it’s safe.”
Alt blinks and looks back at the electricity still sparking on the water. “Oh uh… oops.”
"Don't worry about it, Alt, it worked, didn't it?" Yvonne laughs. Alt grins sheepishly.
"How do we tell when it's safe to go?" Jackie asks.
The sparks slowly die down. Then Frederick conjures up a small leaf and throws it into the water. It plops without much reaction. "I think it's safe now," he says.
"Alright!" Jackie steps out of the elevator first--and luckily, isn't hurt.
Bro goes in after Jackie and then nods, “Alright- forward then!” Then he takes the charge, running past the guards and heading further into the level. Alt glitches after him.
The basement must be for maintenance. In addition to the pipes and vents, there are also bundles of wires lining the ceiling. The group hurries forward through the hallway until they reach a T-intersection. Doors line the left and right hallways, with several sets of double-doors among them. The left and right hallways both bend, heading forwards.
"I bet these hallways form a large square," Frederick says. "Now where do we go?"
{I think we just have to continue forwards,} Anti says, despite there not being a way to go directly forwards.
“Anti says just… continue forward. Sooo I choose this way-“ Bro says as he rushes to the right.
"Alright, I guess?" Jackie hurries after him. "Maybe he's in one of these rooms?" He opens up one of the doors. "Nope, this is a supply closet."
Alt glitches forward to try to check one of the double doors. Bro just kinda- keeps going. Hoping Anti will give him a hint.
The door Alt checks is locked with a keypad. While Jackie and Yvonne hurry after Bro, Frederick slows down next to Alt. He narrows his eyes. "Hey!" he shouts after the others. "This is the only door with a keypad! It might be important!"
Bro stops and peeks his head back. “Oh?? Okay!” He hurries back over.
Alt frowns and then presses his hand to the keypad and pumps it full of electricity. But instead of shocking the keypad, the keypad suddenly starts to glow red from beneath the keys and Alt gets shocked instead.
Alt yells and glitches back, holding his hand. “What the fuck?! That’s never happened before!”
Bro grips at his head then blinks a couple times. “Alt! Anti said he felt that!”
“W-What? What does that mean?” Alt asks, shaking out his hand.
Jackie frowns. "I don't know, but one thing's clear. We got to get in here somehow." He backs up. "Alright. I'm gonna kick the door down.”
“Wait, Jackie--" Frederick says.
Jackie shouts out and runs forward, kicking the door against the handle. He helps and backs up, hopping on one foot. "Motherfucker!"
Alt and Bro blink at Jackie in bewilderment. Then Bro stands up taller and cracks his knuckles, “If we’re brute forcing it? Lemme give it a try!”
“Chase- I don’t think that’s a-!” Alt tries to warn.
Then, Bro rushes at the door and tries to kick it open himself, but with a super kick!
The doors fly open, slamming against the walls.
Jackie frowns at Bro. "Bitch.”
Bro grins sheepishly and rubs the back of his head. “Sorry dude!”
“I bet you loosened it, melon," Frederick says jokingly. Jackie folds his arms, grumbling.
Yvonne is the first to lean into the room. She whistles. "Wow... you guys see this?"
The room beyond is a wide area with high vaulted ceilings. In the center is a large black sphere of some kind, surrounded by a black table encircling it like a ring. Red glowing wires and circuit patterns flow from the sphere, thick glowing cables being the only light in the room. There is nothing else in this room. Only the sphere and the cables that come from it, filling the room like spiderwebs.
Alt glitches in and then looks at all the glowing red light with a slack jaw. He can’t help but shudder- the color reminding him of the Anti from the rift world. “W-What the hell is all this…?” He whispers.
Bro peeks in and gasps. “Yooo this is spooky as hell?”
A pulse of brighter light passes through the cables, and the wrrrr of humming machines increases in the air. {...I'm in there,} Anti says quietly.
Bro’s eyes widen. He points to the sphere and says, “…Anti’s in that thing. Is… is he powering all this stuff?”
Alt stiffens, magic sparking in his eyes as he suddenly curls his hands up into fists. He sparks like a live wire as he growls. “T-They’re using him as a battery?!”
Jackie's expression darkens. "That's so fucking fucked up. H-how do we get him out of there?!”
“Well... how did they get him in there in the first place?" Frederick asks. He glances at Bro. "Can you ask him?"
{I can hear them, you know,} Anti says.
“Anti says he can hear you guys,” Bro says, tapping the side of his head.
{As for how I got in there... Well, this part of me actually doesn't know, because I got separated. I remember feeling... cramped? For a while? And now I'm less cramped but still kind of... pushed down... They used that box thing to catch me, they must've hooked it up to this or something."
“He says he doesn’t know cuz this part is separate from the past that got captured. But he remembers feeling cramped… oh!” Bro suddenly hits his hand on his palm, “I remember a little box! It glowed green at the edges- that’s what they caught him with! It like sucked him in like those vacuums in ghostbusters!”
Alt starts to glitch around, trying to see if he can find anything that looks like what Bro described. After a while, he finds a small shelf on the edge of the room with three of those black boxes. It looks like they all have a place for a plug to go--is that related to how they got Anti into that... sci-fi generator thing?
Alt grabs one of the boxes and looks it’s over in confusion. Then he glitches back over to the cables and looks around for something that looks like it can fit. “These things have a place for a plug… maybe if we plug it back in it’ll go in reverse and put Anti back into one of these?”
"That makes sense!" Jackie says, nodding. "Alright, everyone, let's look around. This room is big but it's pretty open."
The group splits up to explore the area. Quickly, Frederick finds a box full of different cables. Bro finds a loose cable on a shelf not long after. At the same time, Alt notices a circular socket on the big sphere in the center that's the same shape as the one on the black box.
Bro holds up the cable he found, “I think I found a cable that could fit!”
Alt looks at the sphere and touches the socket and compares it to the one on the box. “Got it! Let’s try it out!” Bro quickly runs over and gives his cable to try. Alt studies it to make sure I can fit.
"In case that cable doesn't work, there's a lot of ones in this box," Frederick says, bringing it over.
"Are we sure this will work?" Yvonne asks. "What if Anti just gets stuck in the box?”
“Then we'll smash the box!" Jackie says. Bro grins, “Yeah! Seems easier to smash than this sci-fi shit right here.”
"Go on, plug it in! It looks like it's the right one!" Jackie encourages.
Alt grabs the cable from Bro and plugs it in- first into the sphere then into the box. “Alright… here’s hoping it works!”
And…! nothing happens.
After an awkward moment, Jackie asks, “Is there a button we need to press or something?” He steps up to examine the black box. “No buttons here, uh…” Then he looks around. “Oh! Maybe this?” He picks up what looks to be some sort of remote control and points it at the box, pressing buttons randomly. Immediately the sphere and box start to emit loud VRRRRRR sounds.
Alt glitches a bit in surprise and holds out the box.
“Nice thinking Jackie!” Bro says, clapping Jackie on the back.
“Love that you had to turn it on like it’s a tv,” Alt chuckles.
Jackie laughs as well. “Yeah what gives?”
“It must be some sort of distance device,” Frederick says. “But Jackie, in the future, maybe don’t randomly press buttons on a strange remote?”
“Well what else was I supposed to do? They’re not labeled!” Jackie holds up the remote for others to see. “Just a bunch of identical black buttons! How does anyone use this, much less these IRIS guys?” Bro laughs, “Yeah what that hell? You just supposed to memorize which button is right? That’s not how that works!”
As they talk, something begins to change in the room. The red energy in the cables slowly shifts to green, and then it all retreats towards the sphere, leaving the wires and circuits gray. The black box starts to get warm, like a laptop left running.
Alt watches the color shift then looks down at the box as it gets warm. He grins, “I think he’s in here now guys!” He looks over the box, frowning. “ now… how do we get this open…?”
The box lights up green around the edges as the sphere fully depowers.
{Yep, there’s that cramped feeling,} Anti says. {I’m definitely in there. But it’s probably not designed to “open.”}
“Smash it!” Jackie says encouragingly.
Bro looks up as he hears anti and nods. “Anti’s in there for sure but he’s not sure it’s designed to open. Soo yeah!! Smash it!!” He grins.
Alt laughs and then unplugs it from the sphere before chucking it down at the ground to try to smash it open.
IRIS technology proves to be very durable, though, and just throwing it at the ground proves useless. “Guess we need something more powerful,” Yvonne comments.
Bro cracks his knuckles and grins sharply. “That’s a job for me then!” He grabs the box and tosses it in the air for a second before building up some energy and throwing it at one of the walls like a baseball pitcher.
It slams against the wall with a loud CRACK sound. The green lights on the edge flicker, and one edge goes out. Some green pixels fizzle in midair around it.
{Do that again!} Anti says excitedly. {I can almost push out of the circuits!}
Bro laughs and zips over to grab the box again then throws it at another wall with a loud CRASH!
“Chase, careful!” Alt calls out.
One of the faces of the box pops off and goes spinning across the room. More green lights go out. And as the box falls to the ground, a flurry of static swirls out from it, and reforms into a familiar figure. Bro jumps into the air and pumps his fists, “Yes!! We did it!!”
Anti takes a deep breath. “It’s good to have a solid body again,” he says. He looks at Bro. A few glitches flicker around his head and his headache disappears. “Thank you.” Bro blinks and massages his head as he feels his headache go away and he grins. “Any time dude!! So glad we got you out of that!”
“Anti!” Jackie says, grinning. “Good to see you! Everything okay?”
“More or less.” Anti stretches his hands over his head. Alt sighs with relief, “I’m so glad you’re alright…”
Outside, there are noises. Frederick and Yvonne stiffen in unison and turn to the door. “That sounds like people…” Frederick says slowly.
Alt and Bro freeze too and Alt throws out his hands. “Link up! Let’s get out of here!”
Bro immediately rushes to grab Alt’s hand. Then he blinks and curses, “wait shit! They still have all my stuff! My jacket- my belt- my fucking phone!”
“M-Maybe we can go get that later!” Alt replies quickly.
“I got it.” Anti briefly disappears—then reappears with Bro’s stuff. “Here we are. Good to see you guys too by the way. Forgot to mention that.”
Bro blinks, “…dang I forgot how convenient that is.” He laughs, taking his stuff and bundling it in his arms- he also kicks off IRIS’s boots for good measure. Just in case.
Jackie grabs onto Alt’s other hand, and then Frederick and Yvonne grab him. Surprisingly, Anti also grabs Alt’s shoulder.
“Can’t you get yourself out?” Jackie asks, confused. “Better safe than sorry,” Anti says. “I’ll help. Now let’s go!”
Alt waits until everyone is good and grins, picturing Fredrick’s car back in the forest and glitching them all out of there.
It feels… difficult in a way that glitching usually doesn’t. Like he’s running into some sort of stretchy film over the whole facility. But with Anti’s help, Alt breaks through and they all reappear next to the car.
Alt staggers a bit once they reappear and shakes out his head. “Jesus… that was rough.”
Yvonne shivers. “That felt different than teleporting.”
Frederick runs for the car and unlocks it. “In in in!”
“Your car only fits five people!” Jackie points out. “Don’t worry about me!” Anti says. He glitches out of sight, and static comes from the car radio as the screen on the dash glitches wildly.
“Better not break anything!” Frederick says to him as he gets into the driver’s seat.
Bro pulls Alt into the car with him as he piles into the middle back seat and Alt sits by the window. Bro drops all his stuff in his lap and breathes. “Goddd fresh air is so nice already. Jesus fucking Christ-“
Yvonne gets into the backseat of the car while Jackie gets into the passenger seat. Frederick starts the car and slams on the gas, grass flying as he spins around and drives back towards the road.
“Ooookay!” Frederick says. “We’re probably good but don’t let your guard down!”
“What did they do to you, Bro?” Jackie asks, twisting in his seat. “I mean… you look like you’ve been in a fight, not gone through some science experiments. Is everything okay?”
Bro shrugs on his boots and sighs heavily as Jackie asks. “I mean… they kinda did an experiment on me? I think? Basically they tried to ask me questions and why I was involved with Anti… then when they tried to take me somewhere I broke free and was able to escape them for a bit. I punched my way through the lift-”
“Oh! That was you!” Alt says.
Bro laughs, “Yup- that was me. I fled into the elevator shaft and was climbing down to get to Anti but they drugged me with something… so I started losing consciousness in there. Anti tried to help control my body but I ended up falling and breaking my leg…”
Alt winces at this.
Bro nods. “I came back to and they were scanning me. They used something called an accelerator to heal my leg faster because they needed me for something and it ‘won’t heal in time’. It hurt like nothing else- worse than breaking my leg in the first place. Anti had to knock me out…”
Alt puts a hand over his mouth then his eyes flicker in anger. “That’s fucking horrible!”
Bro nods solemnly. “Then well… before you all found me they made me fight all these robot fuckers. At first it was easy then it just kept getting harder. And I didn’t have to hold back but that just means I was exhausting myself faster. The robots had like blade hands and some could shoot lasers and some were like 7 feet tall and were super tough.” He touches the cut on his face that is starting to heal now. “… once I started to pass out there they drugged me with some smoke then… I woke up to you guys being there.”
“…that’s so fucking awful,” Jackie says, looking stunned. “All of that.” He clenched his fists. “Next goal after we take care of Marvin and Jameson: fucking murder IRIS.”
“Yeah, that’d be good,” Anti adds from the radio. “Fucking… hurt my friends. Use me to power that building. That’s what you get. Is that what they always wanted to do? Gods.” Alt looks furious too, glitching slightly in his seat as his eyes glow bright with magic. “I’ll kill all those fuckers- using Chase like that! They probably wanted to see if they could use you as a weapon- those fucking bastards!”
“What… history do you have with IRIS, Anti?” Frederick asks slowly.
Anti doesn’t answer right away. “I was in the US in the 50s and 60s. IRIS was there too. They tried to hunt me down. I met a friend who helped me hide. Then I went home for a while until I met Jack.”
Jackie frowns, knowing that there had to be more to that story. “Well, I’m glad you’re okay now, Bro, Anti.”
Alt blinks, “You’ve been around since the 50s?”
“Longer than that!” Bro says, “Anti told me he’s been around since the Middle Ages!”
“What?!” Alt gasps. Then he blinks and sits back, “…that feels vaguely familiar- but… still like- shocking to think about.” He crosses his arms. “Stalking you since the 60s is fucking creepy ass behavior too.”
“They didn’t think of it as stalking,” Anti says. “They thought of it as containing a dangerous entity. Which… I’ll be honest, might have been slightly justified. But only slightly. I never wanted to hurt anyone…” His voice trails off.
Bro sighs and leans back, staring at the ceiling of the car. “It’s over now… man… we haven’t even gotten close to getting Jack back though…”
“Once we get home and I’m sure we’re not being followed, I’ll heal up the rest of those injuries for you,” Frederick adds, glancing at Bro in the rear view mirror.
Bro looks up and smiles sheepishly at Fredrick. “If you can, that'd be grand.” He then looks back between Alt, Frederick and Jackie. “How did your mission go by the way? Were you able to get Schneep?”
“Oh, uh… no,” Jackie says. “We kinda… got… kidnappedbeforeweevengottothehotel.” He rushes through that last statement.
“You WHAT?!” Anti shouts.
“Some dark magicians joined up with the Poison Blossoms and attacked us!” Jackie says defensively. “We were completely unprepared!” Bro’s jaw drops and he looks to Alt with wide worried eyes. “Kidnapped?! Oh my god- by a gang?! Jesus are.. are you okay Alt?”
Alt can’t look at Bro as he curls up his seat but he nods. “I freaked out at first… probably more than I should have…”
Frederick shudders. “What did they even want with us…?”
Jackie shrugs. “Revenge on Marvin, it sounds like? That would explain why there was a group of them by the hotel, they were keeping an eye on it.” He pauses, expression darkening. “They we’re gonna lure him out with me as bait. Then sell Alt, it sounds like. Fuckers. They’re one of the worst gangs. I don’t know what they wanted with Frederick, though.”
Now, Bro’s eyes flash angry with concealed power as he hears what the poison blossoms wanted to do. “They were gonna use you and sell my baby brother?! What the fuck! I’ll rip those assholes apart!”
“They… they apparently have been losing a lot of people because of Marvin…” Alt says quietly, “I-I think I heard they didn’t want to lose a doctor… that’s probably why they wanted Frederick…”
Bro sighs heavily and rubs his head, “So… none of us have gotten any closer to stopping Marvin and Jameson and freeing Jack and Schneep… mannn and we were so prepared! How did everything go so wrong?”
“Well we weren’t exactly prepared for some evil scientists and a street gang, were we?” Frederick says patiently.
“In retrospect I should’ve expected the gang, at least,” Jackie says. “There’s like three of them in the city, just because we were dealing with a bigger threat doesn’t mean they wouldn’t jump us.” He pauses. “They… didn’t want to lose a ‘doctor’… not a healer, they said doctor specifically… Mae said that she's a magician, wouldn’t she say…” He trails off, going a bit pale beneath his scars. Then he shakes his head. “Don’t mind me, I’m probably reading too much into stuff.” Alt makes a face at this too and nods, “Huh… that is a good point Jackie… if they wanted to keep Frederick… it does feel weird for them to say ‘doctor’ instead… why did they that? Maybe they wanted Frederick to heal a doctor they already had? But then… why lock him in that closet?” Jackie doesn’t say anything more, just looks worried.
“We can still go through with the original plan,” Yvonne says, glancing at Jackie and Alt curiously but deciding to move on. “I don’t think we alerted them.” “True-“ Bro hums, “I don’t think we should spilt up again. I think we need to face each obstacle together.”
Static squawks from the radio. “Then we’ll need to be fast. Once they’re alerted they’ll throw everything at us. I say we go rescue Jack first—”
“No,” Jackie drawls sarcastically. “Really?”
“Not just because I’m biased!” Anti snaps. “If they realize the wards there are broken they might rush out and leave the hotel less defended.”
Alt nods, “I think rescuing Jack should be a priority too… he’s been locked up there for so long… that’s not to say I don’t think we should rescue Schneep cuz he deserves help too. But striking the most fortified place first is the best strategy.”
Bro nods, “And now that IRIS hopefully won’t be around there anymore- we should be able to go straight in.”
Jackie hesitates, then sighs. “You’re right. Schneep isn’t in immediate danger. He’s… happy enough, under their spell. From what Anti’s said, the same can’t be said for Jack. Though, I guess he’s not unhappy either. But that’s no state for someone to be in.”
They’ve reached the dirt road by now. Frederick carefully turns onto it. “Then it’s settled. We’ll drop the car off, fuel up some more, then head right out to the cabin. Or… as close as we can get before that Vergessil spell kicks in.”
“We can definitely handle it,” Anti says firmly. “We have to.”

It's hard to tell how much time has passed.
Alt and Jackie have been pretty much left alone in this dimly-lit room, though there's no chance that they've been left unguarded.
Jackie takes a deep, shaking breath. He's pretty much cried himself out at this point. And though the fear is still there, despair trying to pull him back down, he has to push through it. He has to concentrate so they can get out of here! "...Alt?" he asks quietly.
Alt has been quietly crying too, trying to keep his own distress more quiet after registering that Jackie was also breaking down. His eyes feel raw and he still can’t stop his shaking. But he’s started to get back some clarity. “Y-Yeah I’m… I’m here.” Alt croaks, just slightly louder than a whisper.
“Good. Good.” Jackie nods. “I’m… guessing you can’t glitch out of the cuffs then. Or you would’ve done that already.” He tugs experimentally at the cuffs on his own chair. They look fairly standard, except for the runic markings.
“No t-these runes are suppressing all my powers… my magic, my glitches I-“ Alt swallows heavily. “I-I don’t know what to do… even if I could d-draw like a rune or something I-I’d still need access to my magic to activate it.”
“Shit. Alright.” Jackie takes a deep breath. “These locks aren’t hard to pick, if only we had something to use! Frederick suggested I put my hair up for this, I should’ve listened, then we could’ve had a bobby-pin…”
Alt tries to think of what they could use… then looks down at his shirt. His chaos star necklace…! It’s pointed… could that work? He needs a way to get it off though. “M-Maybe I could use my necklace- I-It’s been a while since I had to pick a lock… but I’m no stranger to it.” He shifts around, trying to see if he can reach it at all to snap it off.
"Huh? Yeah that might work." Jackie nods slowly. He sighs. “I hope he’s okay. Delyth Mae didn’t seem too fond of him…”
“Y-Yeah I don’t know what that bitches deal is… if she hurts him though-“ Alt grumbles.
"Yeah, Mae's 'deal' is that she's a black magic magician and Frederick's whole job is to stop them, in various ways." As he talks, he tries to see if he could squeeze a hand out of a cuff. "Y'know sometimes you can catch magicians using black magic early on and warn them off, sometimes they don't even know the consequences. But sometimes they're too far gone. I don't know how far Mae is--her magic is still mostly her original color so probably not too far? But clearly she's not willing to listen. Otherwise she wouldn't've joined up with the Poison Blossoms. You made fun of their name, deservedly, but they're really no joke." It's no use. The cuffs are too tight. "Hmm... you know, maybe if you damage the runes they'll weaken?"
Alt is trying to listen and struggles to lean over enough to grab his necklace. “Hm? Oh uh-“ Alt eyes the runes and then nods, “Yeah if we can disrupt some of these… maybe we can weaken the whole sequence. You need multiple runes for something like this to work.”
"Yeah, so if you can't pick the lock you can probably do that, at least," Jackie says. "Your necklace looks spiky enough to damage one."
Alt nods and tries to see if he can grab his necklace one more time-
The lock on the door clunks.
Jackie's head whips over towards it. "Be normal, be normal!" he hisses.
Alt then stiffens and sits up straighter in his chair to try not to seem suspicious, his necklace swinging just slightly on his chest from the rapid movement.
The door opens up. Foxglove returns, grinning. "Heyyyy." Four other people come in with him--three man and a woman, all dressed in dark clothes. The woman is carrying a tripod. "We're going on a trip.”
“The fuck do you mean?" Jackie asks, managing to keep his tone even.
"You'll see." Foxglove leans against the doorframe. Two of the guys walk over towards Alt and Jackie--and one takes out a knife.
Alt backs up as much as he can away from the approaching guys. “Don’t be fucking vague about it, ya smarmy asshole! Tell us where we’re going!” Alt shouts.
"Well you're not going anywhere yet," Foxglove says. "Your friend, however--we just need to get a few things ready. Make sure that Void knows where he is."
Jackie stiffens.
The man with the knife cuts through the rope tying the two chairs together. The other one mutters something under his breath and a red glow surrounds Jackie's chair. It lifts up into the air, hovering about an inch off the ground.
Jackie can't hold back a small sound of surprise, but then he puts on a brave face again. "Show-off."
“What?! Hey! No!” Alt cries out and tries to pull out more from his chains. “Listen, you can’t do this! The Void is just gonna kill all of you! This won’t go the way you’re planning, trust me!”
Foxglove grins. "Don't worry, we've been preparing."
The two men grab onto Jackie's chair and pull him backwards out of the room.
Jackie's eye widens with panic and starts pulling wildly at the cuffs, hoping that maybe something will give with enough brute force. "Alt, you gotta get out of here!" he shouts. "Now! You gotta--!"
Foxglove hits Jackie in the back of the head, snapping it forward and shutting him up. He looks at Alt again and gives a little wave. "Good luck," he says to the remaining man and woman in the room, and closes the door again.
“Jackie! No!!” Alt screams out after him.
The two enforcers start setting up the tripod. The man takes a digital camera out of his pocket. These two look familiar... oh, they were part of the group that ambushed them in the street. The two magicians who knocked out him and Frederick at the end, in fact.
The second the door shuts Alt feels that dread and panic churning in his core. But he’s determined to get out of here now. He grabs the cord of his necklace in his teeth and hurries to reach down and tries to scratch the metal against the runes on his right cuff.
The two magicians look at him, confused. The woman leans over to the man. "You think we should do something about that?" she mutters.
"Maybe?" the man says. "But do you really think that'll work?”
“Hmm... nah." They continue setting up the tripod and camera.
Alt scratches hard at as many runes as he can reach. As he does- he starts to feel that buzzing warmth that he recognizes as his magic starting to flow again. He grins and then switches course to get his other cuff, going to scratch at that one just as hard.
"Okay, okay, cool it." The woman points at Alt, and a beam of blue and green magic hits him as he starts to scratch the other cuff, just hard enough to daze him for a moment.
"Smile for the camera."
Alt grunts and his head snaps back as he’s hit. He drops the necklace and blinks up with confusion. “W..what?” He freezes- a camera? No no that’s just like-!
Alt growls and bares his teeth and now that he can feel his magic- he’s gotta do something! He lifts a finger and points it at the camera, trying to summon a bolt of lightning to destroy it. It feels hard to summon… like pulling the power from thick molasses.
A few sparks dance around his fingers... but he's not able to summon much more than that.
The man looks at the sparks, slightly concerned but mostly unworried. "Heh. Cute." The woman grins and clicks the button for the camera, taking a picture. "Weird effects, too--got that in the photo."
Alt yells in anger and glitches vibrate around him as he snarls. Okay fuck it! Time to try glitching out of this… even if it’s gonna hurt doing so. Then, he’ll destroy that fucking camera. He tries to concentrate, focusing his energy to try to glitch out behind the thugs.
It takes a few agonizing seconds but finally he disappears out of the chair and appears behind the thugs and the camera.
But something wasn’t right about that- he gasps as pain shoots up from his wrists and ankles, the surge so severe for a second it sends him to his knees. He looks down to see they’re bleeding pretty badly- like they were sliced by the metal. He feels himself sway a bit- this is way too similar to his past…! He’s gonna lose himself- he needs to focus! He growls at the thugs and knocks the tripod over with his foot, hoping to break the camera. Then he tries to glitch out of the door.
"What the fuck?!" the woman gasps. She catches the tripod as it starts to crash to the floor.
"Hey!" The man whirls around to look at Alt--and then back towards the door when Alt disappears. He throws a handful of light at the door and it bursts into a shield when it hits the metal, glowing blue and copper. It briefly blocks Alt's way out.
Alt thunks against the shield in a collection of pixels before snapping back. He growls like an angry animal. He doesn’t have time for this! He needs to get to Jackie! He throws out a wave of electricity at the ground before trying to glitch past the door and shield again.
The two magicians yell out and get knocked to the ground as the lightning wave hits them. The man hits his head and gets knocked unconscious, causing the shield to disappear.
The woman tries to get up again. "You little bitch!" she shouts as Alt glitches through the door.
Alt finds himself in a short hallway. with five doors, one of which is the one he just came from. This area looks vaguely office-like, with tiles on the ceiling and short carpet on the floor. There's a man waiting outside the door Alt just glitched through, who stands up straight in surprise. "Hey!" he shouts, reaching for his waist--is that a gun?!
Alt gives himself just a second to get his bearings before he whirls around, his eyes wide and feral-looking and brimming with magic. He tries to grab the guy’s arm to shock him, not even phased by his gun.
The guy yelps, dropping the pistol and slumping back against the wall.
Alt smirks a bit, looking a bit unhinged then hurriedly glitches across the hall- trying to look for any sign of Jackie.
The first door he goes through leads to another short hallway with two more doors: a men's bathroom and a women's bathroom. There's four more people talking, gathered around a water cooler. "Hey!" one shouts.
Nope--next door.
Alt glitches into a wide open space. This looks like it was once a business, but it's been gutted of its furniture and filled up with crates and cardboard boxes. There's a couple card tables and folding chairs. Unfortunately, this space is packed full of people. Sitting at the tables playing cards, leaning against walls checking their phones, counting things in the crates.
They all turn to look at Alt in surprise as he suddenly appears among them.
Alt blinks as he takes in the full scene of people. He staggers back, pulling his mask up and waves awkwardly, showing off his still rapidly bleeding wrist. “Oh uh- hey? Sorry!” He quickly tries to glitch back out of there and continues looking.
Some of the people lunge for weapons, and a couple cast spells at him--but he glitches out of the way before anything hits him. He briefly appears in the hallway before going through another door--
This room is similar to the one Alt and Jackie woke up in, but instead of metal shelves it has worn-down sofas and chairs, as well as some counters installed along the edge of the wall. There's a window, but it's been boarded up from the outside.
In the center of the room, Jackie dangles from a hook that's been crudely attached to an exposed vent duct. His arms are held up above him, cuffed and hooked, forcing him to his tiptoes. His mouth has been covered with duct tape. There's a similar tripod setup that the man and woman were trying to set up for Alt. Foxglove is behind the camera, and four other people in the room watch.
Jackie sees Alt first, crying out from behind the tape.
The other five people all whirl towards Alt soon after. "What the fuck?!" Foxglove gasps.
Alt pants as he enters the room, trying to take in the details. But he just sees Jackie… and then all he sees is red. He snarls like a wild beast and glitches to turn into his white tiger form, lunging straight for Foxglove, teeth and claws ready for blood.
Foxglove shouts out, barely having time to cross his arms in front of himself before the tiger pounces on him, claws digging into his arms.
"Oh my god!" Mae is in here, too, and she looks suddenly angry. She quickly conjures a shield that wraps around her--transforming into something more like a suit of armor. She then runs straight at the tiger, grabbing him and trying to pull him off Foxglove. Two of the magicians shoot blasts of magic at him as well.
Alt roars in anger, digging claws in and trying to shred through Foxglove’s arms. But he doesn’t get far before he’s hit by the magical blasts and is shot off Foxglove. He shakes his head and growls then looks back towards Jackie. He starts to dash towards him, glitching back into his human form as he tries to grab onto him.
Jackie says something, but it's muffled by the duct tape. It's not too hard to lift him off the hook--but it takes a long time.
Mae rushes for Alt, slamming into him and trying to knock him down.
Meanwhile, the two magicians charge up some bigger magic blasts and the last person in the room helps Foxglove to his feet, handing him that same metal bat he was using earlier.
Alt struggles to lift up off the hook but tries to do it as quickly as he can. He tries to see if he can get him out of his cuffs before being bowled over by Mae. He skids slightly across the floor and shakily tries to push himself up. He sees the magicians charging up and holds out his hands, trying to make a shield that’ll cut him and Jackie off from everyone else.
But they're too quick--a fiery red-orange blast hits him, followed by a frosty white-pink one. Alt is rocketed back even more by the magic, both burning him in opposite ways. He shakily pushes himself up, wheezing. He’s taking a lot of damage fast… plus bleeding from several wounds. He needs to find Frederick and get Jackie out of here…!
Jackie cries out. He rips the duct tape off his mouth and runs for Mae and Alt--only for Foxglove to attack him from behind with the bat. Jackie spins around in time to avoid getting hit in the back of the head, but he still gets smacked in the shoulder. Foxglove quickly smacks him two more times, knocking him to the ground.
Now that Jackie isn’t attached to anything… his glitching shouldn’t hurt him. Alt hurriedly tries to glitch to grab Jackie again, “Jackie!! Link up! Hurry!” He shouts, trying to bridge the gap between them.
Jackie grabs onto him quickly. Foxglove growls and pulls back the bat for another hit while all the magicians swivel over to aim spells at them--
Alt sways a bit, blinking spots out of his eyes sluggishly. What…? He knows he’s glitching a Iot but this shouldn’t be enough to drain him…. Then he registers the magic from the last blasts are still aching. Fucking- black magic! He doesn’t have a lot of time before this starts to really weaken him. He shakily holds on tighter to Jackie and tries to see if he can feel out Frederick’s magic… there! He quickly glitches them both towards that direction.
The last room in this building looks very different from the rest of its office-business aesthetic. The room has three cots set up in the middle, with tables and cabinets around the edges... It sort of looks like some sort of operating room, just without any of the necessary tools. There are some stains on the floor that definitely look like blood. There's also another door leading off this main area, partially blocked by a large dog cage.
Jackie's eye darts around. "Th-through there?" he asks, pointing at the door.
Alt shakes off the nausea and dizzying vision with difficulty and tries to nod to Jackie. “I… I-i think so…” He mumbles. He tries to stagger forward towards the door, trying to push through. Just a little bit more, right?
"It's okay, man," Jackie says to him, walking over to help support him as he stumbles towards the door. Behind them, there's shouting from elsewhere in the building. Jackie kicks aside the cage and reaches for the door. It's locked. Of course.
"Uh... hmm." He examines the lock. "Don't think your star could help with this one." He knocks on the door. "Frederick?! Are you in there?!"
A second passes. "J-Jackie?" a voice calls weakly.
"Don't worry, angel, we're here for you!" Jackie says. "Give us a minute!"
Alt presses his hand against the door, trying to see if it’s warded. If it’s not… he should be able to glitch them through. “Lemme see… wards-“ He mumbles to Jackie.
Nope, there are no wards.
"Be careful, Alt," Jackie says, glancing down at his bleeding wounds. And then glancing back the way they came. It sounds like people are running around. "But--fast."
Alt nods and grabs Jackie’s wrist and glitches them through the door.
The space beyond is very small and very dark--so small that it already feels full with just three people inside. Yes, three people. Because Frederick is sitting on the ground, slumped against a corner. The back wall has built-in shelves while the left and right ones have pipes.
"Wh-whoa!" Frederick sits up straight.
"Oh my god!" Jackie crouches down next to him, throwing his arms around him--or over him, as his hands are still cuffed. "A-are you okay?! Did they hurt you?!"
Alt leans against the wall and looks around in confusion. “T-The hell..?” He breathes as he looks at the tiny room. But he shakes it off and hurries over to the two of them. “I’m sorry we can c-check everyone over in a second! I need to get us out of here!”
"O-okay," Frederick says. "I'm--I'm f-fine, by the way. N-not hurt. I've just been in here.”
“They just threw you in a closet?!" Jackie growls.
"W-we can talk about it l-later," Frederick says. "Alt, th-there's a cuff on my ankle, I-I'm chained to a pipe, I-I don't think you can--”
“Not for long!" Jackie says. He feels the part where the chain is wrapped around the pipe. "Code padlock, okay, okay. But it has a reset slot in the bottom. Alt, do you have a coin? We can probably make it work with your necklace but a coin would be better."
“Yeah probably in my wallet-“ Alt starts to say then realizes a very important thing. “Shit! They still have my backpack!” He staggers up to his feet, “I gotta glitch back to get it uh h-here…! Use my necklace in the meantime!” He takes it off and hands it to Jackie. Then he tries to remember if he saw his backpack in the first room or not…
"Alt, no, don't!" Jackie says, taking the necklace. As he fumbles around with it in the darkness, he says, "You're clearly too hurt to keep going. I mean, I'm sure you could, but--Got it!" There's a click and Jackie discards the padlock. "Frederick, what else is there?”
“M-my hands are cuffed," Frederick says. "Behind my back.”
“I'm gonna assume they're the same handcuffs we saw earlier," Jackie mutters. "Maybe we can spring the locks with this." He starts fumbling with the cuffs.
“I-I can’t leave my backpack… my spellbooks and I… shit-! The TRVLR might be in there too!” Alt curses and pulls at his hair before looking back. “I gotta get it- I think I got a few more glitches in me… I-I’ll be right back! promise!” Then he tries to glitch back to the room where they kept Jackie and him earlier.
He makes it there, and luckily, the room is empty. The man and woman from earlier are gone, though there's still the sound of running and shouting in the hallway. He's able to look around the metal shelves on the wall at his leisure.
Yes! There's his backpack, shoved in the corner. Alt sighs in relief at seeing his stuff and quickly grabs it, throwing it on.
There's also Jackie's belt with all his weapons. There are a few other loose objects on the shelves as well. More handcuffs and chains, some boxes of syringes, blueprints of buildings... nothing helpful, though. So, Alt also grabs Jackie’s belt and does a quick once over before concentrating and glitching back to the last room.
In the couple minutes he's been gone, Jackie has managed to free Frederick and get his own handcuffs off as well. He pulls Frederick up and starts looking around for a lightswitch, then jumps when Alt appears. "Holy shit! God. Sorry, I'm on edge.”
“Course you are," Frederick chuckles weakly. "I think we all are."
Alt staggers and fumbles to catch himself on the wall. He tries to breathe and then smiles weakly at them. “I-Impressive Jackie uh… h-here’s your belt. Found it too-“ He hands it over to him.
"Oh! Thanks." Jackie takes it, awkwardly putting it on with one hand while Frederick leans on him.
"Alt... are you okay?" Frederick asks.
At that moment, Jackie finds a lightswitch--which is, for some reason, up near the top of the doorway--and a single lightbulb illuminates the closet. Frederick shouts something in a different language, surprised. "Alt! Y-you're bleeding!"
Alt blinks blearily and laughs dazedly, “Y-Yeah… runes on our cuffs got in the way of my glitching… so it made them bleed.. s’ok though…w-wasn’t my neck like last time…“ He says, slightly slurring his words and trying to keep his eyes open. He’s so tired… Everything hurts. He fumbles to find one of their hands. “T-Think of somewhere safe in Mirygale…! I-If I try to get back to your house… w-we might not make it all the way there…”
"Somewhere safe?! Nowhere's safe!" Jackie snaps.
Frederick grabs onto Alt, and his eyes immediately light up green. Alt feels a rush of magic wash over him as sparkling emerald power wraps around his wounds. "Black magic, too?! God damn it." Frederick curses, and a second wave wipes away the effects of that.
Alt blinks open his eyes with a jolt, the magic helping him feel way better- and full of more energy. “T-Thanks Frederick…” He smiles weakly.
"Jackie, are you hurt?”
“Bruises only, I think?" Jackie says. "Maybe some black magic." Frederick grabs onto him next, casting the same spell--though to a lesser extent.
Outside, they all hear the door of this makeshift operating room slam open. "Check the closet!" Mae's voice snaps. "We're not losing a doctor again!"
Alt whips around to the sound of them in the room and gasps. Then he glares and bares his teeth. “That’s why they locked you in here…!” He makes sure they’re linked up then snaps, “Think of anywhere we can regroup!” Glitches buzz around him as he prepares to glitch them away.
"O-okay, um--we have to be on the same page--" Jackie glances at Frederick. "Uh--the old house?”
“The old huh? Oh!" Frederick nods. "Best place I can think of! Let's go!"
Footsteps are rushing towards the closet. There's a jingle of keys at the doorknob.
Alt nods and holds onto them tight as he glitches them all away.
They disappear just as the closet door opens up.
Then they reappear in a normal-looking living room. It's unfamiliar at first... and then Alt recognizes it. This is the house where the five guys from this world used to live. It's different now, though. Everything is covered in a fine layer of dust, and any personal touches--like knickknacks, like the game consoles under the TV--have been removed.
Alt pants and shakes himself out. But he’s not nearly as drained now that the black magic isn’t sapping at all his magic. He blinks at the house and gasps slightly. “O-Oh… this is… ha… this is where you all took me to stay… when I first came here.”
In his mind’s eye… he can see the first time he met the other guys from this universe… having breakfast in the kitchen. The fight took place here… he shudders slightly.
"Yeah... sorry, it was the only place I could think of." Jackie collapses onto the sofa, sending plumes of dust into the air, which causes him to cough. "Clearly--c-clearly no one's been back.”
“Not since the ABIM raid," Frederick mutters, also sitting down on the sofa. "I guess Moore and Jackson decided there was nothing worth getting here. I mean... we confiscated almost everything. But you know what I mean."
“It’s okay- s’not so bad seeing it again… you guys didn’t really hurt me while I was here…” Alt mutters as he walks around. Then he glitches to go sit with the others, waving away the dust. “Okay well… none of that went as planned…” he grumbles, checking over his wrists. “We need to think of what to do next…”
Frederick rubs his eyes. "Honestly just healing you guys took out a big chunk of my magic. I need a moment to recharge." He pats his pockets. "Damn it. They took my phone.”
“It's probably in Alt's backpack," Jackie says. "Along with your tie and jacket. They tend to group stuff together... assuming things haven't changed in the past year." He sighs. "Let's just... see if we can reach the others. We'll go from there."
Alt shrugs off his backpack and hands it over for them to look through. “Yeah… that black magic ate a huge chunk of my magic too… being healed helped but I definitely need a boost… also you know… minor blood loss- I should have some protein bars in there.”
Frederick rummages through the contents. "Oh spellbooks! That's cool, that's cool..."
After a moment, he pulls out two phone-like objects. One is the TRVLR, which he puts back, but the other is his phone. He searches some more, then takes out a couple protein bars and passes them over to Alt.
"Can you contact Anti with that phone?" Jackie asks.
"Yeah, he gave me that number.”
“Just checking. We should probably reach out to him and Bro, too.”
“We should. But Yvonne first. She'll be worried that we smashed the sphere so quickly." Frederick starts to dial.
Alt pats himself down then looks in the pocket of his bag to find his own phone. He gratefully takes the protein bars from Fredrick and digs in. “They’re together so lemme call Bro-“ Alt says as he pulls up Bro’s number and gives him a call.
"What... the fuck was up with those guys, anyway? I recognized Mae, but what about all the others?" Frederick asks.
While his phone is ringing, Alt sighs and waves his hand. “Apparently some dumbass gang called the Poison Blossoms. They wanted to use Jackie as bait to draw out Marvin…” He angrily takes a bite out of his snack. “They’re all fucking dumbasses.” He says through a full mouth.
Frederick blinks and looks at Jackie.
"They have a stupid name, but they're ruthless," Jackie says. "Especially their former leader, Belladonna. I handed him over to Schneep but it seems like they're still going. They started out as trading stolen art, then branched out to weapons, including guns, and then drugs, and then... other things." He shudders. "It looks like they're expanding to magical crimes too.”
“Good lord," Frederick mutters.
Jackie grins a bit. "Gotta be serious for you to say that.”
“Well of cour--" He suddenly stops. "Yvonne? Yvonne! No, we're fine, we're--sorry about that, but--no, stop tracking that signature, we're not there anymore, cast a new spell."
Though Frederick has gotten through on his call, Alt's call rings forever... and then goes to voice mail.
Alt chuckles slightly as he listens to his call ring… and ring… then it goes to voicemail.
Alt actually jolts at this, looking at his phone in confusion. It’s very very rare that Chase leaves him on voicemail… he doesn’t even leave one. He just hangs up and tries to call again. That usually gets him to pick up!
"Yeah, we're fine, I just said that," Frederick says. "We hit a setback. We, uh... got jumped pretty much right away. Remember Delyth Mae?" He starts to briefly explain everything.
...
...Bro's phone goes to voice mail again.
Jackie glances over at Alt. "He's not picking up?"
Alt looks concerned as he looks at his screen again. “…yeah. If… if he’s with Anti- he would know his phone was ringing. Why isn’t he answering…?”
"They could be busy," Jackie says. "I mean, they were heading to probably the most securely warded area. Jameson and Marvin wouldn't want to lose their leverage against Anti."
Frederick glances over. "Yeah, there might even be summons there."
“Maybe…” Alt says, still looking worried as he looks at his phone screen. “I just feel like… I dunno. Anti would have at least left a message… he can be in all those different places at once, you know?” He sighs and stuffs his phone in his jacket to get to eating. “…I dunno,.. maybe I’m just being paranoid…”
Jackie frowns. "It's worth worrying about... How about we call them in five minutes or so? If they're busy, that'll give them time to finish."
Alt nods and sits cross legged to finish his snacks. “Yeah… okay. That’s a good idea.” He really hopes Chase is okay…
"Yeah..." Jackie says quietly.
And yet, five minutes later, when Alt calls him again, it goes to voicemail once more.
Jackie and Frederick exchange glances.
"Yvonne will be here soon," Frederick says. "Once she's here, we'll... we'll head out to where Chase and Anti should be. To check on them."
Alt nods, gripping his phone. “…y-yeah… I don’t think we should head back to the hotel without them… we need to all get back together…. I just hope they’re both okay…”
Jackie nods worriedly.

Bro is stuck in the white room alone for a while before the door opens again. Dr. Prosopsi and the guards are back... though there's more of them now, increasing from three to five.
Bro after a while started pacing- trying to see if he can get the cuff to budge, but to no avail. He’s standing when the doctor and guards enter again.
"Hello again, Mr. Brody," Prosopsi says. "We're going to move out now, if you don't mind."
{Oh, you should mind,} Anti's voice says in his thoughts. {But we don't want to stay here so seize this opportunity.}
Bro glares a bit but stands up taller and breathes, “Alright.” At least he doesn’t feel alone anymore… knowing Anti is here.
Prosopsi smiles. “Don’t worry, everything is going to be fine.”
Two of the guards step forward. One bends down to mess with the cuff. It’s not clear what they’re doing, since there’s no visible keyhole or keypad, but they must be taking it off. The other guard stands nearby. Seemingly waiting for something.
Bro braces himself, watching them cautiously. If he's gonna try to escape- he needs to make sure he does so once they take him outside...
Click.
The cuff comes off. The other guard who’s hovering nearby reaches out and takes Bro’s arm— And Bro feels a sudden sting at the point of contact. He jolts and tries to pull himself away, "H-Hey! What are you doing?!"
The guard lets him pull away—revealing that there’s a tiny syringe in their hand.
{Oh shit!} Anti gasps. {Okay, run! Get out of here!}
Bro staggers back then immediately tries to rush towards the door, shoving everyone he can out of the way.
Prosopsi yelps in surprise, but the guards are prepared for this. The ones near the door reach for their belts and take off a gun-like device which they all shoot at Bro. Wires launch out, grabbing onto him and delivering a shock. He might’ve been able to dodge one, but not three.
Bro screams out as he’s shocked, body jittering and spasming. He crashes to the floor, gritting his teeth as he tries to get control of his limbs back.
“Mr. Brody, please.” Prosopsi adjusts her coat, her expression becoming carefully, intentionally neutral. “There’s no need for a fuss.”
Bro feels a slight headache—clearly Anti disagrees with that statement.
Two of the guards walk over and grab Bro’s arms, pulling him up and dragging him out of the room and into a hallway with white walls and a metal floor and ceiling.
Chase struggles as best as he can as he’s dragged. “Motherfuckers! Let me go! Get yer hands off of me!” He tries to get his muscles to respond, to move, move, move! This might be his only chance! He wiggles and tries to see if he can elbow one of the guards holding him in the face.
His elbow hits the mirrored mask of the helmet, shoving it back into the guard's face beneath. They cry out and instinctively drop Bro's arm. But there's another one coming to take their place!
{Go go go go go!}
Bro pushes the other guard off him and then takes off running, using his energy to give him a burst of speed.
The other guard stumbles, while the others fire those taser guns again but Bro's too fast. He's running down a hallway lined with metal doors.
Bro tries to think in his head, hoping Anti can hear, {Can you point me to where you are?!}
{Hard to tell. I can't connect to the rest of me like usual.} Anti pauses. {I think--downwards?}
Up ahead there's a slight bend and then it ends in a pair of double doors with windows in the upper halves. Through the windows, Bro can see more doors--not metal this time--and at the very end, an elevator.
He spies the elevator and wonders if he should go that way. It's probably better than letting himself be cornered... He rushes towards the double doors.
Bro runs at the door--and slams against them. He shouts in surprise. “The fuck?!
Turns out they're locked. Behind him, the guards aim their tasers at him again and fire.
He quickly bursts into the air and flies above them to dodge. Then he whips around and tries to crash through the door with even more force. He really crashes through now- skidding against the floor slightly as he bursts through. Then he quickly tries to push himself up and beelines for the elevator. “Downwards, downwards!” He whispers to himself.
The elevator is closed, but the doors easily open with the press of a button.
{There's probably a trapdoor in the top for maintenance,} Anti says. {Be quick!}
Bro hurries in and looks around, trying to find a way to get to the trapdoor. He flies up and tries to pull at it-
The guards are right behind them! Two of them aim at him again, while one takes something off their belt and throws it--it's another one of those metal spheres. The other two guards are catching up as well.
Trying to pry open the trapdoor leaves Bro wide open to get shocked again. He yells and tries to stay in the air but it becomes too much and he crashes to the elevator floor. He sees the metal sphere through dizzying vision and gasps out. “f-fuck..! No-!”
The metal sphere slides open again. Instead of spraying out white smoke, this time it fires darts, sending out a circle of small needles. The guards are wearing thick body armor, but Bro is not.
As soon as Bro sees it’s not smoke but something worse he gets a surge of energy that has him able to leap out of the way and presses himself up to the ceiling of the elevator to avoid the darts. “J-Jesus fucking Christ!” He breathes, then he tries to slam his fist into the roof to try to open the trapdoor again.
Meanwhile, the guards pour into the elevator. Prosopsi comes in last, having lingered back, and slams on a button to close the doors. The small room is now crowded with people.
Bro glares, baring his teeth. "You all are fucking insane!" Then, he notices the indent of the door and just- punches it clean off, surging up into the elevator shaft above.
He finds himself in a dark shaft lined with wires, pipes, and vents. There's a set of doors up above, but then the ceiling--they're on the second highest floor. Next to the elevator, is a blank space, where there's a ladder, which goes up and down through a series of metal rings that are there to protect the climber from falling, but which are spaced apart enough for Bro to easily slip through and grab the ladder.
"Mr. Brody, please, you're going to hurt yourself!" Prosopsi calls.
“I think you maniacs are gonna hurt me more!” Bro shouts down. Then he spots the ladder and squeezes through, starting to climb down as best as he can. He thought there would be more room to fly in here… guess that big elevator shaft he saw in Doctor Who gave him the wrong idea on how they really worked.
Prosopsi sighs and starts shouting, saying something about alerting the guards on the next floors down.
Bro climbs downwards, past the elevator. It looks like there are three more stories beneath this one, meaning he was being kept on the fourth floor out of five.
{Be careful,} Anti says. {I'll know when we get close.}
Bro nods and then chuckles, “I don’t think there’s much that can hurt me in here.”
But as Bro climbs... a sudden wave of tiredness hits him. His eyelids flutter and he slumps slightly against the rungs. “…s-shit…” He breathes. That prick… did they drug him somehow? “…Anti I think we have an issue…”
{Fuuuuck,} Anti curses. {That's why she said you'd hurt yourself. Okay, okay. Look around, do you see anywhere safe?}
Bro blearily blinks back the tiredness and tries to look around. But his vision is blurring way too fast. He can’t make anything out and he whimpers a bit in muted panic. “N-No I… e-everythin’s blurrin…” he slurs.
{Good thing that's not affecting me, then,} Anti says.
“How's that works?” Bro mumbles in confusion.
{Alright. Alright. You can try to climb to the bottom, or--There's a vent that's running by the ladder, it's at least flat if you can lay on that. You might even be able to pull off a grate and hide inside if you're fast. Do you see it?}
He doesn't clearly, since his vision is wavering, but there's a long metal rectangle nearby that's probably what Anti's talking about.
Bro clumsily climbs down, trying to cling onto the vent and look for a grate. If he’s gonna pass out he’s gotta make sure the guards won’t find him…
There's a section where there's a lighter square of metal, lined with some black bars--that must be a grate. It's going to be difficult to get it off and climb in, though...
Bro shakily tries to pull at the grate anyways, but that desperation inside him is dulling. He whimpers out, scared tears in his eyes. “A-Anti I don’t want to pass out here… t-they’re just gonna grab me again I… w-what do we do..?”
Anti doesn't answer. His silence is foreboding. {Do I... have your permission to try moving your body?} he asks hesitantly. {My power is weakened, but I should be able to do that even with this sedative.}
Bro slumps against the vent as the sedative tries to pull him under. He nods sleepily. “Mhm… trust you…” he whispers, fighting to keep his eyes open.
{Okay. Okay.}
Bro feels the headache slightly grow as Anti concentrates. Bro's arm clumsily reaches out, his weight shifting. It feels so weird to have his body move without his say so as he’s semi-conscious, but it’s not like Bro can do too much. But the sedative is affecting his coordination. He moves to the edge of the vent, wobbles there for a moment as Anti tries to make him regain his balance--but then he falls.
{NO!}
The falling sensation makes him panic, he tries to see if he can gain any control back- maybe he can fly or slow down or-!
A few terrifying seconds pass, and then Bro hits a large pipe with a loud CLANG!
SLAM!
His leg clips the pipe as he lands on it and he screams out in pain, curling up as the area throbs. The pain gives him just a bit of clarity- but now he really can’t move… his leg might be broken…!
“S-shit…!” He curses, tears in his eyes.
{I'm sorry I'm sorry!} Anti gasps.
“N-Not your f-fault…” Bro tries to reassure him.
The elevator doors on the third floor open up slowly. A group of guards have pried them open with a crowbar. The one in the lead looks down at Bro. "There!"
Bro inhales sharply in panic and chokes on a sob as he tries to force himself to move. But, every movement in his leg is pure agony. He collapses onto his side before he can move an inch.
The sedative is tugging… pulling at his senses and drawing everything into darkness. This might be the only time he wishes he had magic… just so he can find a way to warn Alt. The next time he tries to escape… he won’t make it this far again. He showed too much of what he can do.
He quietly sobs, panic and fear and dread swallowing him whole with the sedative, until everything goes dark.

Alt wakes up in a dimly lit room. There are no windows, and the walls are lined with empty metal shelving units. He's sitting in the center of the room on a metal chair. Handcuffs bind his wrists to the arms of the chair, and his ankles to a metal bar connecting the chair legs. The metal surface of the cuffs have some sort of runes scratched into the surface.
As Alt rises to consciousness he groans and slowly blinks open his eyes. The pain seems to be not as intense on his face but it still aches. He hears a groan behind him as someone else wakes up. Is that... Jackie? It seems he's in the same position as Alt. A rope wraps around their torsos, binding the two chairs together.
Then- he feels the chains on his arms and legs- and that’s when he begins to panic. He struggles hard against them, eyes blown wide in fear. “N-no…! Nononono-!” He whimpers, trying to access his powers- trying to do anything to get out.
"Oh good! You're awake."
They're not alone in the room. There are two people to Alt's right. Mae is in here, standing near a closed metal door with her arms folded. There's also a man here, with long blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail and wide blue eyes. He's standing a bit closer, holding a metal baseball bat resting it across his shoulders. He seems to have been the one who spoke. "Sleep well?" he asks.
But, Alt’s so panicked he hardly even registers the other people and questions. All he can hear is ringing in his ears as his fear and panic starts to swallow him whole. As he tries to glitch or reach his magic, the runes on the handcuffs flare yellow. They must be preventing him from accessing his abilities.
"Alt? Alt!" Jackie shouts. He also struggles. "H-hang on, Alt! C-calm down and breathe!" Oh god, didn't Alt say he was kidnapped when he was younger?! Oh fuck he's got to be freaking out! Jackie also feels some panic trying to take hold of him, but he pushes it back to try and comfort Alt. "I-it's going to be fine!"
Alt is definitely rocking their chairs in his desperation to try to get out. It’s just like then- it’s just like the first time! He hears Jackie but it sounds like he’s a million miles away. He can’t get himself to breathe. All he can feel is panic, panic, panic-!
The strange man frowns. He takes the bat off his shoulders and smacks the nearest shelving unit with it, making a loud CLANG! sound. "Hey!" he snaps. "Maybe listen a little when someone's talking to you?”
“Give them a minute, Foxglove," Mae says, checking her nails. "You should know how people react by now."
Alt yelps in fear as the bat thwacks against the shelves and whips his head over to look. He’s trembling and he hates it. He’s looking weak in front of … whoever these fuckers are! He tries to glare at the two of them but it’s definitely undercut by his very obvious fear. “W-Who the hell are you? W-Where are we- w-what do you want with us?” He growls shakily.
"Oh good! Now we're listening." The man--Foxglove, apparently--grins. "Well, I'm Foxglove, this is Delyth, but apparently you've already been told that. We run an... organization in this city." He adjust his grip on the bat, planting one end on the floor and leaning on it. "One that's recently had some problems with those freaks in the hotel. You two apparently know what's going on there, don't you?”
“S-so you're some--some evil group of magicians?" Jackie asks, trying to seem calm.
"Oh no, there's not that many magicians among us. We didn't start that way." Foxglove jerks his head back towards Mae. "Delyth and others like her only joined recently. Safety in numbers.”
“Safety from the Void," Mae agrees.
Alt tries to control his shaking but it’s hard to hold back. “Yer all fucking I-idiots…! We were on our way to try to stop those guys and s-save his friend!” He jerks his head towards Jackie. Then he looks around and realizes something, “wait- w-where’s Frederick…?!”
"Frederick?!" Jackie gasps, eye darting around and immediately panicking. "Wh-where the hell is he?! I-if you've done anything to him, I'll--”
“Oh you'll what? What will you do, Mr. Tied-To-A-Chair?" Foxglove taunts.
"I'll kill you!" Jackie snaps. "That's what I'll do!”
Jackie blinks, momentarily taken off guard. The way he said that... it sounded... "Do I... know you?”
“No, not personally. But I've heard of you. Hard not to." Foxglove taps the side of his head. "Think about it, you'll make the connection soon.”
“Chiu is safe, don't worry about that," Mae says calmly. "And he'll stay that way--if there's no trouble."
Alt growls and bares his teeth, “You’re gonna use him as fucking leverage?! You’re all f-fucking stupid! You kidnapped the wrong fucking people!”
"Oh, I meant no trouble from him, not you," Mae clarifies. "Though that is a good idea now that you mentioned it..."
Jackie inhales sharply and goes pale. He pulls harder at the cuffs. "Fucking shit shit fuck damn it hell fuck--"
Alt shuts up, his eyes widening. “No wait I-!”
Foxglove laughs. "That's a satisfying sight. Well anyway. I know who the vigilante is. Mae knows who the magician is. So who are you, then?" He walks around so he's fully facing Alt. "Why are you 'the wrong fucking person' to kidnap?"
Alt tries to back up from Foxglove, his eyes weakly trying to flicker with magic. This guy… he also saw him in his vision now that he’s getting a closer look- “…yer shorter than I thought you’d be.” Alt says, sizing Foxglove up. He then smirks and bites out, “So, I could kick your tiny ass across this fucking floor is you weren’t fucking cowards! That’s why I’m the wrong fucking person to kidnap. I was gonna give that void what was coming to him! I could do the same to you. You don’t know who you’re fucking m̷e̵s̶s̸i̴n̷g̶ ̴w̸i̵t̸h̷.”
Foxglove leans away. For a moment, he looks taken aback.
Mae, however, does not. "Right. Sure, kid." She rolls her eyes.
Alt bristles, “I’m not a fucking kid-! You fuckers don’t even know what I’m capable of!” He struggles more against the chains- c’mon his magic has been getting so much stronger! There’s gotta be a way he can get out of this!
"Two months ago, the Void killed twelve of our people and maimed three more. But you can definitely take him down, of course.” Mae continues.
“Moonflower and Malcolm got taken, too, don't forget about that," Foxglove says, glancing back at her.
Foxglove grins, and walks around to face him instead. "Oh, so now you remember!"
Alt then blinks and looks back at Jackie- or as best as he can. “…what? Poison blossoms?”
Jackie looks back at him in turn. "They're a gang. A strong one. They have this gimmick of all the leaders having the names of poisonous flowers." Then he looks back at Foxglove, confused. "But I thought they were gone.”
“Because you killed Belladonna?" Foxglove asks. "You thought that'd kick us down forever?”
“I didn't kill--”
“Yeah, yeah, your doctor friend killed him, it's the same difference, really," Foxglove dismisses.
Jackie shrinks back.
Alt’s eyes widen at this as he looks back at Foxglove. Then he snorts and laughs loudly, “You all decided to name your gang- your dangerous criminal gang… something with ‘blossoms’ in it? Not very intimidating innit?”
"Yes, that was the point." Foxglove walks back around to face Alt. "Foxglove, in case you're wondering, can really hurt your heart. Like this." And he swings the bat hard into Alt's chest.
“Pft my heart? That’s the lamest thing I’ve ever-“ Alt starts to say before the bat hits him and knocks his breath away. He wheezes and pitches forward, coughing. He tries to breathe then looks up at Foxglove with a withering gaze. “…ya proud of that one? It’s fucking stupid. I’ve met amateur criminals with better gimmicks than this.”
Foxglove laughs. "Alright, I admit the gimmick isn't the best." His expression turns serious again. "But that doesn't matter when you get results. Which I'm very good at.”
“Really? Couldn’t have fooled me,” Alt spits.
“C'mon, Foxglove," Delyth says. "Some people who've seen magic just aren't intimidated by nonmagicians anymore.”
“Really? I mean--internal organ damage is internal organ damage." He flashes another smile. "But fine. You take the lead now." The two of them switch places.
Delyth folds her arms. "So. Alt, is it? Friend of Mr. Chiu's?"
Alt glares at Delyth and bares his teeth. “This is a waste of fucking time. Whatever you guys are looking for, we don’t have it.”
"Just information would be a good start," Mae says calmly. "Maybe, if it turns out you really have nothing for us, we'll let you go."
Jackie barks out a laugh. "Yeah fucking right. I doubt the Poison Blossoms have changed that much since you've joined. Don't listen to her, Alt. I don't think you were, but just in case."
Mae's expression hardens. Her eyes glow slightly. "Don't make this difficult... I saw how you both reacted to my magic."
“You suppressing my own magic to make yours superior is cowardly and pathetic,” Alt spits. “You’re also goddamn terrible at this. I still don’t know why the fuck you decided to attack and kidnap us and what the fuck you want. What? I’m just supposed to spill everything you could ever possibly want to know to you because you chained me to a chair? Fuck you.”
"Fuck yeah, Alt!" Jackie laughs.
Mae scowls. "Fine. You want to know why we attacked you?" Her eyes glance over to Jackie. "Because of the Void magic taces in those scars. He knows you. Intimately. The Void and the blood witch aren't too eager to let people go. I'm sure he'd be very happy to get you back."
Jackie stiffens, shadows covering his eyes.
“If you fucking try that, I’ll f̵͇̅r̵͐͐y̷͐̚ you until you can’t form another fucking coherent thought-!” Alt growls dangerously, straining against his restraints towards Delyth with murder in his eyes.
Delyth flicks a small bit of purple-and-yellow magic towards Alt. It lands on his forehead, where it causes a burning ripple across his face. Alt cries out and ducks down his face to try to shake off his burning. "Calm down, sparky, we're not actually going to hand him over to the Void.”
“We're just going to get him over here again," Foxglove says. "We've been planning this for a month, figuring out what spells to set up. We just needed the right bait."
Jackie takes a deep, shaking breath. Don't think about it don't think about it don't think about it--
Then Alt starts to struggle more and gets even angrier, “you dumb motherfuckers have no idea what you’re messing with! And I’ll fucking kill you for this-!! Using Jackie for bait is fucking twisted!”
"Wh-what did you expect, Alt?" Jackie says, voice trembling a bit. "For people who kidnap people to be nice?" He takes another breath. "W-well, what are you going to do to Frederick a-and Alt, then?”
“Not sure about Alt yet," Foxglove says casually. "I've never seen magic like that, though."
Mae tilts her head. "Someone would want that." She walks away towards Foxglove and the door. "We can discuss it."
Alt’s stomach drops so fast it hurts. “N-No- no you—! You fuckers!” He screams after them, rocking their chairs again as he tries to pull himself out- somehow! But of course it does Jack shit. He’s starting to tremble again- that fear wanting to suck him in and drown him.
"Alt, c-calm down! B-breathe!" Jackie gasps.
Foxglove and Mae don't look back at him. They talk with each other in low voices for a moment, and then Foxglove opens up the door, heading out.
"H-hey! Get back here!" Jackie shouts. "Wh-what are you going to do to Frederick?!"
They don't answer him either as they leave the room, locking the door behind them.
"Fuck! Fuck!" Jackie gasps, forcing back the tears in his eyes. "W-we can get out of this. I know we can get out of this."
Alt is shaking wildly, staring wide eyed at the floor.
No one knows where they are- he can’t get to Bro or Anti…! And he already used their one lifeline and it looks like it didn’t even work…! They’re gonna let Jackie likely get killed or worse to lure in Marvin… then sell himself to the highest bidder to drain his magic, or turn him into a weapon or a magic slave or something even worse-! And he can’t do anything cuz he’s useless without his magic and glitches!
Alt chokes on a terrified sob and hangs his head, finally letting his fear show through. Part of him wants to answer Jackie- wants to find some solution. But that part is being consumed by the hopelessness that’s dragging him under.
Jackie takes a deep breath. He knows what the lack of an answer means. "O...okay," he whispers. "We can--w-we can talk about it--i-in a minute. It's--it's okay that you need--i-it's--" He squeezes his eyes shut but some tears still slide out. Holding them back quickly becomes impossible as he also starts to cry.

Bro wakes up with a slight headache. He's lying on the floor of a room that's entirely white. It's a strange shape, a long rectangle with him at the end. To his left is a bed with a metal frame, and to the right is a curtained alcove. Two cameras hang from the ceiling, one in each corner, diagonal from each other. When he moves, he realizes there's a cuff around his left ankle, made out of some sort of white plasticky material. He's also missing his jacket, hat, and shoes, leaving him with just his shirt, pants, and socks. Anything in his pockets is gone.
Bro groans as he pushes himself up and rubs his head. “Wha… happen’d…?” He slurs to himself. Then, the stark white registers and he instantly starts to panic. He tries to surge up and is knocked back down as he tugs on the cuff too hard. He looks down at it with even more panic. It’s just like SCLERA’s! He looks down at his clothes and pats himself down. “The fuck?? Why did they take my clothes?? And my shoes?! Fucking bastards!”
He takes a second to breathe and then looks at the cuff with determination. He’s a fucking superhero! These guys don’t know who they’re dealing with.
He grabs onto the cuff and tries to pry himself free.
…what the hell is this made out of? It’s not giving at all! It looks like plastic but clearly it’s something else.
“W-What the fuck?!” Bro growls as he tries tugging even more. But it’s not budging!! If he tries to fly- will that help?? Or will he just pull something out of a socket? Even with his super healing that is hard to heal unless he gets help to pop it back in place… he’s had experience there.
He pushes himself up and looks around till he sees the camera and then surges forward, yelling, “Hey! Fuckers?! You all better come fucking explain yourselves before I level this place to the ground!” His eyes shine with blue light as he bares his teeth.
The tether pulls him back, and there's a slight shock when his eyes light up. Bro yelps as he’s shocked and then looks down at the tether with wide eyes. Ohhh fuck…
The headache increases slightly, then dies down to something more like pressure than pain. It feels like there's a pebble in his head, stuck right in the middle of his brain.
But regardless of that, threatening the camera seems to have worked. A metal door at the far end of the rectangle slides open, and in walks a woman with short red hair, wearing a long white coat. With her are three people in black uniforms, helmets with mirrored lenses covering their faces. "Hello there," the woman says, smiling.
Bro starts as the door opens and then backs up a bit, glaring at them dangerously. “The fuck are you?! Where am I? What did you do with my friend?!” He snaps with authority.
"Please calm down sir," the woman says, raising her hands placatingly. "You are in a secure facility. We apologize for the accommodations, we were simply unaware if you would be hostile. Let's talk, shall we?" She smiles again. "My name is Dr. Renee Prosopsi. I work for Inspiring Research of Impossible Sciences, who owns the facility you are in. We have been studying ALTR 114209 for some decades now, and believed you were in danger from it when you walked into our hidden surveillance in the Scanruil Forest."
“Well you thought wrong!” Bro shouts out, “He’s my friend! You had no right to capture us like this!”
"Your... friend?" Prosopsi repeats, looking mildly surprised. "Sir, ALTR 114209 is an extremely dangerous entity. In our previous encounters with it, it has proven willing and able to hack our secure databases and possess or injure our personnel. If you believe it is a friend of yours, it must be because of anomalous manipulation."
“No way! He’s a nice guy! If he hurts anyone- it’s cuz they deserve it.” Bro crosses his arms and glares at Prosopsi. “And I know you IRIS fucks deserve it.”
Prosopsi laughs. "Well that's a bit harsh, isn't it? You don't even know us.”
“I’ve met enough like all of you to know your kind.”
”... you know, it's very strange." One of the uniformed guards hands Prisopsi a clipboard, which she looks at. "We have done a preliminary search and we could not find any records of someone with your appearance. We found a very close match, but your appearance is slightly different. It might be excused, though. Can you tell us your name, sir?"
Bro makes sure to school his expression.”Of course you wouldn’t have my records, I'm from out of town. … I shouldn’t have to tell you my name but fine. It’s Kieran Brody.”
…they wouldn’t know his dad here- that should be a good fake name. …wait maybe he shouldn’t have used his last name then?? Bro’s keeping a neutral expression but on the inside he’s sweating bullets.
"Kieran Brody, I see, I see." Prosopsi nods. She glances over at one of the guards, who shakes their head. "Mr. Brody, I should have disclosed this earlier, but I wasn't expecting it to be relevant so quickly. You see, our state of the art WTCHR cameras--" She gestures at the cameras in the corner of the room. "--can tell if someone is lying through our patented eMotion Sensor technology."
Bro’s eyes widen and he stiffens just slightly. “…why are you assuming I’m lying? Technology can be wrong sometimes- lie detectors are wrong all the time.” He tries to say neutrally.
"It's possible, Mr. Brody," Prosopsi admits. "But unlikely. Still, we ask that you be as honest as possible. How long have you known ALTR 114209, Mr. Brody?"
“Uh- that’s a good question…” Bro says, thinking. “…probably over a year now?”
"I see." Prosopsi nods. "And how long have you had your anomalous abilities?"
Bro stiffens again, “…my what?”
"When we captured ALTR 114209, you were observed to fly into the air," Prosopsi says. "Your body also emits a slight electrical current. Were you born with these abilities or did you gain them at a later time?"
The weird pressure in Bro's head seems to increase slightly.
Bro grunts and grips at his head. …did they put something into his head?? Dread spreads through his body as he glares and bares his teeth at Prosopsi. “I don’t think that’s any of your fucking business.”
"We are just trying to learn more about ALTR 114209, Mr. Brody," Prosopsi says, unintimidated by Bro's expression. "If these abilities are a result of contact with it, it's possible there could be side effects."
“Well I can say for certain my powers have nothing to do with him,” Bro says shortly.
Prosopsi's eyes light up before she quickly schools her face again. "That's good to know, Mr. Brody. Thank you. Now, are you hungry, Mr. Brody? Thirsty? It's the least we can do to make up for taking you here so suddenly."
The pressure in Bro's head briefly increases.
Bro grits his teeth and shuts an eye slightly as the pressure increases. What is that?? “N-No I’m okay… last I remember I just had lunch.”
"Alright. We'll just have to do some paperwork and then we can let you go," Prosopsi says, giving a slight smile. "So sorry about all the mess."
Bro seems to perk up a bit and he smiles slightly, “Okay uh… cool.” Then he blinks and quickly frowns. “But… you’re not gonna let Anti out… are you?”
"ALTR 114209 is an extremely dangerous entity," Prosopsi repeats. "It would be very irresponsible for IRIS to release it again. There is no guarantee that the ECD will work for a second time. It was able to escape the first use of an older ECD model, it may evolve to anticipate this newer model."
“He’s only dangerous to you fuckers because obviously you won’t leave him alone! He’s a sentient being! you can’t just leave him locked up because you think he’s dangerous!” Bro shouts, gesturing wildly.
Prosopsi simply turns away. "If that was the case, criminals would be loose on the street all the time, Mr. Brody," she says as she approaches the door again. One of the black-uniformed guards opens the door for her.
“Don’t talk to me like I don’t know that, you fucking bitch!” Bro snaps, blue trying to spark up in his eyes again. For a spilt second- he thinks about grabbing a guard and throwing them at the door and Prosopsi to try to get out- but he still couldn’t get the cuff to budge. Besides if they let him go… he can still go find Anti on his own afterwards. They’re gonna let him go- he can’t mess up that chance. So he breathes and steps back just glaring at everyone as they start to leave.
Prosopsi and the three guards head out, the door slamming shut behind them. Bro sighs once they leave and goes to sit heavily on the bed. Man… they had to take his utility belt and phone too huh? Fucking thiefs…
A few minutes pass.
{You can be an idiot sometimes.}
Bro stiffens and looks around the room. “H-Hello?? Who’s there…?” He whispers.
{It's me--or part of me.} Now that he's paying attention, he realizes who's talking. It's Anti. He's not speaking, but Bro can hear the voice in his head. {A very, very small part of me, hanging out in your Wernicke's area. I can't do much other than talk and give you a headache. I don't even think I can leave.}
“My wernickle-wha?” Bro asks, then gasps, “wait you’re this headache?? …that’s a relief I thought those fucks put something in me. Well expect for the… not leaving part- but I’m sure we can figure that out.” He sits back and seems to relax- then registers what Anti first told him, “Hey! Why are you calling me an idiot?!”
{They're not going to let you go, Bro,} Anti says, using an unusually soft tone. {You have strange powers. Their whole thing is finding things with strange abilities and keeping them. They say it's to protect people, but I think they just want to use their powers.}
“What?!” Bro gasps and bursts up from the bed. “B-But they just said-! Why would they lie to me about that?! To give me a false sense of security?!” He growls, really wanting to punch something. “God these fuckers are just like SCLERA!!“
{I'm guessing it's so you'll cooperate more,} Anti says. {But if they really wanted you to cooperate, they should've said that they'd let me go too, but you'd probably realize that was a lie.}
Bro grits his teeth and bangs the back of his hand against the wall. “So- what do we do? I can’t break this stupid cuff- you’re trapped and… t-the others don’t know we’re here! They could be in trouble!”
{They have to realize what's happening eventually,} Anti says. He goes quiet for a while. {I see three options. One, we wait for them to realize and track us down. Not ideal since that could take a long, long time. Two, the rest of me manages to get out of wherever I am and comes to break you out. Possible, but... difficult. Three, you try to escape--or at least get to that emergency glass sphere Yvonne handed out. I'll guess that IRIS is going to come back to get you eventually. For whatever they're planning. They don't know you, they won't be totally prepared for your powers yet. We could work on two and three at the same time...}
Bro sighs and nods, sitting back down on the bed. “…I guess that’s all we really can do… I-I have a bad feeling… and usually that means something bad is happening… I-I’m worried…”
{I didn't know ESP was part of your power set,} Anti says, amused.
“I think it’s like… a spidey sense,” Bro chuckles. “Or maybe it is like that… I dunno. My gut usually isn’t wrong though.” He grips at his arms and curls his legs up as best as he can onto the bed. “…I’m not gonna let myself be their toy though. I’ve been fucked with by one evil company already… and that’s one too many times.” He holds out his arm and thoughtfully touches where he knows his SCLERA implant is. “…we’ll get out of here… I gotta stay positive.”
{They won't see what's coming,} Anti promises. {We'll hit them with everything we got.}

The first floor is full of white smoke as well. Unconscious strangers lie on the ground. One of the doors has been knocked down. No, burned down, by some sort of purplish acid. Some magicians from the ABIM were also lying on the ground unconscious.
Alt’s stomach drops, seeing all the people. Bro gasps and stumbles back.
"What the fuck caused this?!" Jackie says, voice muffled from behind the mask.
There's shouting coming from the lobby. "I'm going to burn your whole fucking face off this time!" Marvin screams.
All of their heads whip towards Marvin’s scream. Alt swallows then glitches ahead to try to see what’s happening- that could be Frederick in trouble!
Jackie also realizes it at the same time and rushes towards the lobby, jumping over sleeping bodies. Bro hurries after Jackie once he starts to run, though he looks down at the bodies with worry.
Through the fog, they can see Marvin's glowing eyes, as well as several other glowing objects that dodge and duck and throw beams of multicolored lights. The magicians who are still standing have covered their faces in glowing colorful magic. There's about seven of them left--Frederick and Yvonne are among them.
Alt sees the others are okay...ish. Then, he charges up some magic and tries to blast Marvin from within the smoke- hoping to catch him off guard.
Marvin spins around, blocking Alt's blast with a shield. "There you aaare!" he says, grinning. "And Jaaackie, too! So good to see you!" He throws magic at both of them, the blast splitting in two. Then a bolt of pale orange magic hits the back of his head and he spins back around, shooting a beam at the magician who did that.
"No! Leave him alone!" Alt tries to summon a shield too, stepping in front of Jackie- but his shield gets shattered instantly and he skids back. He growls and staggers up, trying to shake off the blast. He tries to concentrate, summoning up some of his light magic. That's his best bet against Marvin right now! He glitches closer then tries to throw out a beam of bright green light at Marvin's chest.
Jackie manages to dodge, ducking entirely. "Frederick?! How are things going?!”
“Alright?" Frederick shouts back.
"Why's that a question?!"
A small, laser-like beam hits Marvin right over the sternum. He yelps, looking more surprised than hurt. But it did something. Enough to make Marvin angry. He hisses and leaps at Alt, hands enveloped in purple light.
Alt looks pleasantly surprised then gasps and glitches underneath Marvin to dodge. He throws out a wave of lighter magic towards him once he’s behind him.
Bro takes that opportunity to rush at Marvin from the front and tries to punch him.
Marvin disappears in a puff of black smoke, reappearing to the side. He tosses a fistful of magic towards Alt and Bro, purple flakes that start to spread--and then green glowing vines erupt from the ground, pulling him down.
Bro skids and starts to backpedal as the magic spreads out- he quickly grabs Alt and pulls him close, going to try to shield him from the magic. But Alt manages to thrust out a hand in time and casts a shield over them just in time before the magic hits.
Anti glitches over to Marvin, driving a knife downwards. Marvin conjures up a shield and uses it to push him away. He screams out in frustration. He teleports again and spins in a circle, sending a wave of magic outwards. Some of the magicians conjure up shields, but it burns through some of them.
Jackie cries out as the attack crashes into him, falling to the ground. Anti also gets hit, and the black magic starts to eat away at his form. He glitches wildly to try and get it off.
Alt’s shield starts to burn and Alt cries out from it. Bro leaps in the air and tries to take Alt with him but slips and Alt glitches to try to catch himself back on the floor. He growls and then charges at Marvin- turning into his tiger form with teeth and claws flashing dangerously.
Alt hits Marvin--only for Marvin to push him off again with a wall of violet magic.
Alt skids back and tries to shake off the magic, then glitches around the lobby in dizzying circles around Marvin, building up electricity around him as he does. Then he leaps at Marvin while he’s down with a roar, trying to keep him pinned down to the ground.
Marvin is starting to get up when Alt leaps on top of him. He stares up at him in surprise.
"Jackie!" Frederick gasps. He runs over to Jackie, standing between him and Marvin, and wildly throws magic at Marvin. He spins around, blocking some of the magic with his shield, but it cracks under the onslaught and hits him, knocking him down.
Bro blinks in surprise then laughs, “Yeah, Frederick!” He swoops down to try to help with Jackie too.
Jackie nods at Bro in thanks. Frederick flashes a smile through his green glowing mask and gestures at the other magicians. "C'mon! Pin him! Watch out, Alt! Hold him!" Various tendrils of magic erupt from the ground beneath Marvin. He shrieks and Alt feels him shifting beneath him, shrinking--turning into a smaller cat to try and escape.
Alt sees this and he snarls, sending electricity through Marvin to shock him and stop him from escaping- even catching claws on his tail to keep him from running.
The cat yowls and Marvin starts to shift back, hoping that growing bigger will thrust Alt and the containment magic away from him. The magical ropes snap and Alt gets thrown away. Marvin scrambles backwards, standing up and breathing heavily. His clothes are shredded from Alt's claws.
Alt skids back and roars out in frustration. He heaves, eyes alight with magic. He charges at Marvin and then zips into another form, turning into a large bird and trying to strike talons across his face.
Marvin conjures up another shield, blocking Alt's attacks--but then two bolts of yellow and blue magic hit him from the side. Marvin screams and turns to the side, throwing globs of magic randomly. "I'll bury you! I'll bury you with my bare hands!"
Alt flies back and glitches back to his human form, panting and trying to catch his breath.
Anti glitches over behind Marvin and stabs him. Marvin screams again and spins around, shoving him backwards. And then... that scream turns to laughter. His eyes land on Bro as he reaches to the side... and an item appears in his hands. A small test tube. "Hey... remember this?"
Bro freezes, trying to get to his feet. “No wait that’s-!”
Purple magic climbs up the tube-- And Bro feels a yanking in his chest. It's urging him to attack the nearest person--Jackie!He yells as he feels the tug and immediately goes to swing a powered fist at Jackie. Bro shouts out a warning, “J-Jackie watch out!”
Jackie ducks, Bro's fist going right over his head. "Whoa! What the fuck?!”
“That's soul essence!" Yvonne gasps out. "Get that away from him!"
Alt’s eyes widen as he looks back towards Marvin. “What?!” He bristles and glitches in anger, “You fucking son of a-!”
But before Alt can go after Marvin, Bro feels that tug again and rushes at Alt, punching him in the face.
“S-Sorry!” Bro cries out. “I-I can’t-! Shake it off!”
Alt wipes at his face, gritting his teeth. Then he turns and tries to lunge at Marvin, magic burning around him in bright anger.
Marvin jumps backwards, laughing. "Oh? Are you angry? Are you--"
Anti grabs Marvin's shoulders and throws him back to Alt.
Alt yells and tries to grab Marvin’s face to shock him as hard as he can.
Marvin cries out, but the electricity doesn’t seem to do as much as it should. Marvin grabs Alt in turn and does something similar, hands flaring with acidic magic.
Alt balks in surprise then screams out in pain as the acidic magic burns his face. He collapses to the ground, clawing at his face.
Meanwhile, Yvonne rushes over to Bro. “I need you to try and stay still for this,” she says, and presses both hands against his chest and starts chanting something. Staying still might prove difficult, as he feels a burning in his chest.
Bro is trembling slightly from trying to fight off whatever this is. Then, he yells out as he feels the pain- but he can handle pain! He tries his best to stay still.
The burning must be because Marvin is still holding the soul essence as his hands light up with acid. Marvin gets up, lunging for Alt again— Anti glitches over and grabs him again, throwing him to the side where magicians are waiting. More of those magical ropes wrap around him and he screams angrily, trying to burn them away.
A glowing blue circle draws itself on Bro’s chest as Yvonne continues to chant steadily. The burning feeling is slowly reducing.
Bro cries out, shutting his eyes as the spell keeps going. But as the pain dies down, his shoulders start to relax.
Yvonne finishes up her chant, and Bro feels the pain fully fade. “That should protect your soul for a bit,” she explains.
Bro sighs in relief and puts a hand on his chest. He smiles at Yvonne and nods, "Awesome- thanks Yvonne!"
Frederick and Jackie rush over to Alt, and Frederick crouches nearby to cast a purifying spell on Alt. “He has to be running out of magic,” Frederick mutters. “Even Voids don’t have unlimited amounts of energy.”
Alt gasps for breath, tears falling down his face as he tries to get his bearings. "T-Thanks..." He tries to look out to see where Marvin is. There's gotta be a way to finish this...! ...can he summon his lightning bird form? That's all light magic... but it's been so hard to activate on his own.
Marvin screams and blasts the magicians with a spray of dark purple magic. They go flying backwards, and a couple lose concentration on their mask spells, breathing in the remaining white smoke and falling to the ground.
Marvin’s head snaps over to Alt and Bro and teleports closer—but Jackie blocks his way. “You!” Marvin snarls. He grabs hold of Jackie. “I should have—”
“Get back!” Jackie yells, and Marvin shouts out and stumbles backwards, a knife now buried at the base of his ribs. He’s breathing heavily as he teleports around Jackie and tries to grab Alt from behind.
Alt cries out as he's grabbed and tries to struggle out of Marvin's grip. "L-Let go!"
Bro sees Alt in trouble and he gasps, rushing over to try to help. "Alt!"
“You started all this,” Marvin growls. “I don’t know if I should thank you or kill you, but I think I’ll choose kill you.” He draws his hand back, conjuring up a bright ball of violet light—
Alt heaves in panic, his eyes blown wide. No no-! He doesn’t want to die!
Then there’s a tug in his gut- some primal part of him reacting to his fear. In a flash of lightning, two electric charged wings unfurl and protect Alt from the magic- then sweep out to send Marvin flying back.
“What the—” Marvin’s eyes widen and he screams—sounding actually hurt for the first time—as the lightning of the wings hits him and he flies backwards through the air. He topples over the remains of a sofa, and more magical vines grow up from the ground to hold him.
Alt rises in a daze, his eyes filled with sparking white-green magic. He furls out his wings, the air crackling like a storm.
Marvin growls, breaking through some of the vines but not all. “Eat this you dumb bird bastard!” He shouts, sending out another spray of violet light.
Alt holds out a hand and swipes the black magic back and approaches Marvin.
In a zip of electricity he appears in front of Marvin and throws him into the wall by his throat. “You’ve lost, void.” Alt says in a strangely echoing voice, “All the people you’ve hurt- the lives you’ve taken. It stops here.” Marvin growls at Alt, preparing to fight back—
But then, He builds up a ball of sparkling white magic in his hands, then thrusts it at Marvin’s chest. He freezes and the purple in his eyes flickers. His mouth opens but he can’t even scream through the pain. Such strong light magic coming into contact with the black magic that’s consumed his body—it’s like lightning in his nerves and veins. And all through this, Alt seems strangely stoic- emotionless. Almost like he’s been possessed by his own magic.
Anti glitches over. In this state, Alt can sense him when he’s so close. Not light or dark but something off the spectrum of shade altogether. “Put him down, I can take it from here,” he says.
For a second, Alt doesn’t seem to hear Anti- pushing the magic further in Marvin. Then, he feels Anti’s presence and he pauses. He lets go of Marvin and steps back. He watches, tilting his head down at Marvin like a curious bird.
Anti leaps forward as soon as Alt steps back, grabbing onto Marvin. A sharp hum fills the air as static surrounds Marvin's form, shrinking close to his skin, a tight layer. Marvin weakly tries to struggle-- There's a flash of green light.
Anti backs up again, and Marvin lies on the floor, staring up at the ceiling. His eyes are no longer glowing purple. They're normal blue. Then he breathes in the last bit of the white smoke and he goes limp, dazed.
It’s quiet for a beat.
“Is… is it over…?” Bro asks quietly.
Then, there’s a zip of lightning as Alt’s wings disappear and he pales. His eyes roll back and he collapses.
“Ah shit! Alt!” Bro cries and hurries over to pick him up and look him over.
"Jesus!" Jackie gasps.
The magicians start moving. Frederick and Yvonne hurry to Alt's side (alone with Jackie) while another pair grab Marvin and drag him to the side. One conjures up orange magical rope and ties Marvin's arms behind him.
The other three are checking over their fallen comrades. One gasps and whispers something, and an indigo breeze sweeps through the room, pushing the smoke away. Someone mutters something like "you couldn't have done that earlier, Jess?”
Alt’s wheezing and trembling, his skin hot to the touch as green-white magic pulses inside his veins.
“He must have overexerted himself," Frederick says, looking at Alt.
“To be fair… this is somewhat normal for when he does that… bird thing,” Bro says quietly.
"Fuck... he's also injured." Frederick presses a hand to Alt's shoulder, a ripple of green magic spreading across his body to heal his wounds. Frederick blinks and sways a bit. Jackie reaches out to support him.
Alt seems to relax a bit as Frederick’s magic spreads out.
Bro looks at him in worry and shakes his head. “Don’t overexert yourself too, Frederick… A-Alt’s gonna be fine, he just needs some rest.”
Frederick nods, breathing heavily. "All... our other healers... got downed. But I'll... be careful. What happened to... Jackson?”
“We took care of him," Jackie says.
"You what?!”
“He's not dead!" Jackie quickly adds. "Probably. He probably needs some medical help--”
“I'll get him," Anti says. "The rest of you... I dunno." And he disappears.
Yvonne digs into her pocket and takes out her phone. "I'm gonna call for more healers."
“That’s probably a good idea…” Bro sighs. He then looks back to Frederick, “Alt destroyed Jameson’s watch… but Anti made sure he wasn’t dead. But… I think we cut off all his magic for good… he said… his heart was in the locket, I think?”
"He said what." Frederick looks horrified.
"Have you heard of something like that?" Jackie asks.
"I-it's a very dark ritual... to extend someone's life... holy shit..."
"I mean... Anti told us he's been around for over 90 years now so... that makes sense," Bro says with a wince.
Frederick shakes his head. "I'll...process that later. W-we got to take care of those hypnotized victims before most other things, I think.”
“Hey!" One of the magicians shouts. "Can we get everyone gathered in this room?"
Bro looks back towards the shout and then slowly gets up, cradling Alt in his arms. "...wonder what they want?" He asks, before starting to head over towards the magician.
"Oh, hey! Chase, right?" The magician nods at him. This is the one with the indigo magic--Jess. She has blonde hair pulled into an updo which has sort of half-fallen-out with all the action. "If you're, uh... If you feel alright leaving your brother, can you help us find everyone who's unconscious? I think we should gather them all in here. It'll be a bit crowded, but we need to keep track of everyone and heal them and stuff."
“Oh! Yeah I can do that!” Bro grins, “I can carry a couple too, super strength and all that!” He goes to gently lay Alt down somewhere safe and then starts to help gather up the unconscious and injured into the room.
By the time Bro and all the magicians are done getting everyone into the lobby, laying them on the ground in rows, the reinforcements have arrived. These magicians are all wearing leather bracelets with shiny blue gems--that must be some sort of healer uniform. They get to work purifying and healing the wounds from the fight with Marvin. Some people are waking up slowly.
Bro wipes off the sweat and watches the healers work in fascination. So cool… what a neat talent to have. Sometimes he wishes he could use his healing factors to help others instead of himself…
Anti also appears, holding Jameson in his arms. He sets him by Marvin. While Jameson is pale and unconscious, Marvin is awake, staring at nothing in a daze.
Bro goes over to Anti and then crouches down by Marvin, waving a hand in front of his face. “….its almost weird seeing him so still now.” He comments.
"He's probably having a crisis," Anti mutters.
Marvin's eyes flick towards them. He flips them off. Then looks away again and returns to his daze. "Not too much of a crisis, though," Anti says.
Bro makes a face and flips Marvin off too. “Hm… his eyes aren’t that freaky purple anymore. Did you get rid of his void magic or something? I thought that’s what the other magicians were gonna do.” Bro asks Anti.
"I locked it away," Anti says. "Theoretically, it could come back if someone knows how to unlock magic. But I made it very complicated. I doubt any regular magician would know how to undo it. And yeah, they were gonna lock it. But I figured it would be better if I did, and did it soon.”
Jackie has been standing to the side, letting one of the healers take care of his injuries. He looks at Marvin and Jameson warily. "...now what'll happen to them?”
“The ABIM has to go through the whole legal process, but they're definitely going to prison," Frederick says.
"Magic prison?”
“Magic prison."
Bro sighs and nods, glaring at both of them. “Good. They don’t really deserve to see the light of day again.”
“If you ask me, that's a bit too generous," Jackie mutters.
"Maybe, but the ABIM doesn't have the death penalty," Frederick says. "Again, I think it's more for us than them." He glances at Marvin and Jameson. "It'd be easy to stoop to that level but we can't do that."
Bro nods, going to sit and rest his arms on his knees. “I get it, Jackie. I get your anger… your want to end a life. But… I dunno. That’s something I’ve struggled with as a hero. My life would be so much easier if there were certain criminals I could get rid of… but what kind of person would I be if I did that?” He grips at his arms, “…even accidentally… that kind of stuff weighs on your soul. We have to try to be better… even if my anger tries to tell me differently.”
Jackie is quiet for a moment. Then he sighs. "Yeah..."
Frederick pats Jackie's shoulder. "Listen to Bro. He knows what he's doing.”
“Yeah, I know he does." Jackie rubs the back of his head. "Yknow sometimes I hate that I learned morals."
Frederick laughs. "Well, I love that you did. You've grown into a good person. The kind of man I love." He kisses Jackie's cheek.
Jackie's cheeks turn very red.
Bro smiles and nudges Jackie’s shoulder. “I liked that you learned morals too. I think you can really work to being a hero too someday. Or.. whatever it is you’d like to do next. You have so much ahead of you now!”
Jackie smiles slightly. "Yeah... I think I'd like to help Frederick and Yvonne with their stuff. I know I don't have magic, but hey, anything I can do.”
“We'd love to have you," Frederick says, grinning right back.
“Yeah! Having a non-magic guy with a magician is totally valuable! Look how much I help out with Alt!” Bro grins. “And you can totally help kick butt!”
"Heh. Thanks Bro." Jackie lightly punches Bro in the shoulder.
"Hey guys!" Yvonne walks over. "They're gonna teleport Moore and Jackson to a holding prison. Jackson needs to be monitored for any side effects of that spell breaking. Anything you all want to do before they go?"
Jackie glances at them. "...no. I don't have anything for them."
Bro blinks at Yvonne and then hums and looks back towards the two of them. “Hm…. Well- Alt certainly got his blows in. I think I just need to do oneeee thing.” He goes over to Marvin- picks him up slightly- then punches him in the face.
"Ow!" Marvin blinks, looking more surprised than anything.
“That’s for trying to control my soul! And hurting Jackie! And my brother! You fucking cat bitch!” Bro snorts. Then he drops Marvin and dusts off his hands. “Okay! I’m done!”
Marvin's so stunned that he doesn't really react as one of the magicians grabs him and lifts him up. Another carefully picks up Jameson, and they, along with several other magicians, disappear in puffs of smoke.
A redheaded healer wanders over to Bro and Alt. "Does your brother need anything?" she asks.
Bro blinks then gets to his feet to grab Alt and bring him back over to the others. He’s still warm and doesn’t look like he’s resting very peacefully. Bro frowns in concern. “I… I dunno actually- I think he said… this magic overload stuff only really gets better with rest…”
Alt blearily tries to open his eyes, glancing out dazedly as the room still spins around him.
“Oh, Alt!” Bro smiles, “You awake?”
Alt mumbles something incoherent.
"Alt!" Jackie hurries to Alt's side. "How are you? Do you need anything? There are healers here now, they could help with stuff."
Alt glances at Jackie and kinda flops a hand towards him- not really clear if he’s trying to wave hi or grab onto him. Then he tiredly flops against Bro’s chest, his eyelids fluttering.
Frederick chuckles. "Maybe we should just head back to the house."
Bro chuckles and readjusts him. “House might be good… I think all his injuries got treated now so he probably just needs a good place to crash.“
"Sounds great, then." Frederick nods.
"Meet you there," Anti says, and disappears.
"Looks like Alt won't have the energy to glitch us, so I'll teleport everyone," Yvonne says. "And then I'll need to crash. Oh! Hold on, before that." She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a test tube full of a pale orange liquid. "Bro, you should have this." It's the soul essence.
Bro blinks as he’s offered the test tube and then he stares at it in his hand. “Great! ….what do I do with this??”
Yvonne shrugs and makes an 'I dunno' sound.
Frederick bursts into hysterical laughter.
"Okay, but for real, there are a lot of beneficial spells you can cast with soul essence," Yvonne says. "Orrrr you can keep it as a funny decoration. It's yours, it's up to you. Link up?" She holds out her hands.
Jackie makes a snrk sound. "Sure, Yvonne." He and Frederick hold hands and Frederick takes one of her hands.
“I think it’s kinda weird to just have a… jar of me just… lying around.” Bro mumbles as he adjusts Alt in his arms enough to put the soul essence in his pocket and then links up with Yvonne. “I dunno- maybe Alt or Blaise can… find something magic-y to do with it. …which still feels weird.”
"Like I said, up to you," Yvonne says. "Better to have it in your hands so you can decide. Alright. Let's go." She closes her eyes, and there's another puff of blue smoke as they teleport away.
