I got to hear the single acetate of Bob Dylan playing “Blowing In The Wind” that will go up for auction at Christie’s in London next month. A new recording—and the only copy of it in existence—the hard-coated acetate is the launch product of NeoFidelity, a new company headed by legendary producer T Bone Burnett. Christie’s held a listening event for industry insiders (and surely some prospective buyers) at New York’s Power Station studio in Studio A where McCartney, Springsteen, Madonna, Sting, Paul Simon, etc have recorded classics over the years. To be honest, the record sounded good, and it was a great performance by Dylan, filled with a deep, weathered emotion that I felt brought something new to the song, imbuing it with the weight of experience that a younger Dylan 60 years ago wouldn’t have been able to bring to the table yet. It may wind up that only a few dozen people will ever get to hear this record—meaning not only the performance but the format itself since it’s an experimental product—so I count myself fortunate to have heard it.
